Should they stay or should they go!

When Buxton and Lewis return:

Should Go -

Margot and Santana

Will Go:

Martin and Miranda

Miranda backs up 1B, 3B and DH.   Martin backs up at CF and SS and can pinch-run
I know it’s too early for the two vets Margot and Santana, but they are not as versatile    Tell me why I’m wrong (yes, I liked last week’s barrage of home runs from Carlos Santana - I get it!).

Who stays up probably depends a lot on the next two weeks. Miranda, Larnach, Martin, and Kirilloff all probably have some instability in their roster positions. Miranda, Larnach and Martin probably moreso as they were all considered depth players to start the year and weren't viewed as worthy of a 26 man roster spot to start the season.

Austin Martin has played 0 innings at shortstop this season, either for the Twins or for the Saints.  He played 0 innings at SS last season, either.  FWIW, he played almost no SS in college at Vanderbilt, either.  So it's not just my rinky dink amateur opinion; people being paid have made these judgments. The Jays and then the Twins did try to force it for a couple of seasons 2021-22, but it didn't work.

Folks should get over the notion that the team currently sees him as a viable shortstop option, whatsover.  He's a backup shortstop only in the same sense that Kyle Farmer is a backup catcher - he played the position for a while, sometime in the past.

Martin backs up CF, 2B, OF and can pinch run. That’s it. He is not a viable backup at SS not having played there, in how long? Why anyone thinks he’s a back up for SS is beyond me.

EDIT: Ash already said the above part.

But I agree, mostly, with your post about who should or will go.

Santana makes 3 plays per week on defense that Miranda would not…….Miranda could be hitting .230 by early June & there’s no getting veterans back once released ……Martin might be hitting .190 in 15 more AB’s - Margot territory……..Martin won’t get a sniff of SS as long as Castro & Farmer are on the roster, he is a potential back-up at 2B however.

With 65% of the season left, a Team can’t afford to scrap its depth. The young guys have options and can go up & down. As the season progresses health risk is reduced due to less games remaining. At some point you go with your top performers at that moment in time…… probably by August 15th.

It’s May 4th……Vazquez was hitting .120 about 3 weeks ago and he’s around .220 now….Farmer was at .065 a week ago and is now at .136 ……Castro was in high .180’s about 2 weeks ago and is now up to .280 ….Kepler was 1 for 20 & hitting .050 to start the year and now he’s at .255…..and as you mentioned, Santana hit 4 homers in 5 games recently. Guys get back to their historical level of performance for the most part.

Martin has no baseline to make assumptions about……..that’s one big reason.

I don’t think they get to a point where everyone is healthy. If they do get there the moves they make should depend on the point in the season. Castro, Margot and Farmer bring value to this team. I also expect all three to hit better than they did in April. If it is June 1, I would be motivated to keep them and utilize players with options to keep the depth.

t's a shame. But they are getting regular play to prove themselves better than some other guys.

Problem is Santana IS playing first base. Not Miranda. Not Kirilloff.

If Miranda and Martin are basically going to sit on the bench, or rotate into the gamne, better to have them play everyday for half-the-season...and hope some of these aging warm bodies who WON'T be with the team in 2025 will increased their worth and be able to be flipped for a low-level prospect at the very least. (plus the chance to have anoeehr team eat more of their salary).

I almost question the need to keep folks like Severino or Wallner on the 40-man. Again, if they can increase their stats enough to be part of a trade...both could be better replaced by a few guys at AA right now, and Kiersey would be a better choice for a future roster add (not to mention Rodriguez) if you need that backup outfielder.

Same issue with bullpen arms. But at some point you play to win games, not to increase a player's worth. And the longterm outlook of the team.,

I agree with you on Severino. If he doesn't start hitting, his 40 man spot is in danger. Wallner, after a horrific start, has just hit homers in three straight games. He won't lose his 40 man spot.

He still has a 42 percent K rate he is far from secure.

I really doubt there will be a time this year when the Twins will have all their 40-man roster position players healthy at one time. It seldom plays that way, seemingly especially for the Twins.

Right now, veterans Margot and Farmer and probably Santana haven't played well enough to justify their roster spots. As we saw with Willi Castro, a week or two can make a huge difference. It is possible that good performance by younger players could result in the DFA of one of the three players later in the season.
