Major League Ready Verified Member Posted February 1, 2024 Posted February 1, 2024 The question is what number are they currently using in their budget? It's likely very conservative. There is a decent chance the amount of available dollars could jump a bit. Could that amount combined with the Polanco savings land a decent SP? Would they flip DeSclafani if that happened? Dman 1

That means you're optioning a better pitcher in Ober or Ryan just for depth. DJL44 1

He was scheduled to be in long relief for the Mariners if what I read was correct. Could fit the same role for the Twins and be a spot starter if someone gets a minor injury. Of course, if we are spending $ on a good starting pitcher, we may want to ship him out along with his contract. Cory Engelhardt 1

Montgomery and Snell are the only two good starting pitchers available. Did i miss someone? What are the odds of Minnesota adding either pitcher? Does anyone believe there is a chance? My calculator reads 0%. DJL44 1

Flipping DeSlafani makes the entirety of the $10.5M savings from Polanco available. It's not hard to imagine their budget estimate for TV revenue was next to nothing based on the reported amount of payroll reduction. There is a play here if they get this TV deal done soon. The net result would be a good free agent SP plus Topa plus a top 100 prospect and another decent prospect plus whatever they get for DeSlafani. He should bring something back given the team getting him would only be on the hook for $4M in salary. That would be a great outcome. Dman 1

He seems to work well at $16-$17M - flip DeSclafani’s salary in a trade and there’s $12M available against Clevinger’s number. 2 year deal & 2nd year mutual option. Montgomery for 5 years is the best move to me.

DeSclafani cost the Twins $4 million. He may be moved too for further salary relief. I believe we should listen when the Twins indicate a strict budget. I would be pleasantly surprised at any figure above $125 million for the player payroll. Now if by some miracle the media deal from last year is resurrected, stuff can happen. We wait.

If not and you can't flip him, it's always an option just to eat the $$ and be done if he doesn't have a good Spring.

I doubt that the FO would sign a long-term contract without known revenue streams into the future. This is an interesting point. It is possible they use whatever figure they arrive at this year as a minimum expectation. They have Kepler coming off this year. Vazquez / Paddack and Castro after 2025. Perhaps they trade Castro at some point. Point being, they could sign someone to a multi year deal with the risk being they would be handcuffed if the TV revenue continues to be less than the previous deal. Of course, success on the field would also increase the top line which would be the best scenario.
Major League Ready Verified Member Posted February 1, 2024 Posted February 1, 2024 Anyone know how the money transfers? The Giants agreed to pay the Mariners $6M who then agreed to pay the Twins $8M. Can the twins keep the $8M if they find someone to take DeSclafani with his entire $12M salary? I recognize that probably would not happen. Just trying to understand our options.
KirbyHawk75 Verified Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Back to the topic. Does this mean another season of no Twins games? Any advancements with Prime?
Trov Verified Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 The TV deal is expected to be at this point a single season, so really nothing for long term cash influx. No point in thinking of multi-year contracts if you are counting TV money in budget. Yes, the deal may add little to this years budget but any long term signings will not be affected because next offseason Twins will be in same boat. Report also talks about taking less than last year. My guess there will be a deal done, but will not have a ton of affect on signings unless for 1 year prove it deals, not sure if anyone out there for that.

AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted February 5, 2024 Posted February 5, 2024 So, have we heard anything further on how thus might affect their budget this year? I believe I read that the contract for this year was going to be 85% of the previous contract. The prior contract was 50, so does that mean they have 85% if $50mm to work with? Or even 50% of that amount, if they spend 50% of revenue and on salaries? In any event, seems like they might suddenly have some extra financial flexibility….

I believe the number I've seen is around $40M.
