No Surprise... Twins Decline Martin Perez 2020 Option

Good move, let him find work elsewhere.  He should not be in the majors with a club that expects to contend.

At the same time, he helped get us off to a wonderful start this year.  Good luck Martin!!

Good luck to him. Maybe he can find his identity as a reliever on a non-contending team. The clock has struck midnight on his quest to be an MLB starting pitcher.

The Twins are making decisions that make sense today. If necessary I believe the Twins can easily replace Perez and his 5.12 ERA for less than $7M, but I'm hoping that the Twins end up adding significantly better starting pitching options this off-season.

I'd rather the Twins use the spot for one of the rookies, say Smeltzer.

I doubt the Twins want to go into the season with more than 1 of Dobnak/Smeltzer/Thorpe in the rotation. I would guess Minnesota is going to sign at least one cheap vet SP who they believe has some upside to compete for the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation. Hopefully the Twins add at least 3 proven starters who are significantly better than Perez this off-season and only the 5th spot in the rotation is up for grabs.

Never liked the Perez deal, and they got about 6 weeks of All-Star baseball out of him before turning back into a pumpkin. I at least have more confidence they can fix up some ‘project’ players, but they aren’t at the level of the Astros yet.

That half a million bucks probably eased the pain for Perez.

All told, his mini-run of about 5-6 starts there was impressive and it appears the Twins got about as much out of Perez as they could. His late-season implosion didn't prove to hurt the team, as they did finish in 1st place in the division (although that point could be argued if you tried hard enough).

It was pretty clear to me that after the All Star break the guy wasn't going to stick. Good luck to him, happy trails, and on to 2020.

No big loss. Twins need to improve their pitching staff....not try and rehab some of the guys who didn't get it done. No quarrel with any of their moves today.

The Twins should be able to replace him with Devin Smeltzer, Kohl Stewart, or better yet Stephen Gonsalves if he enters the season healthy. At worst, he doesn't find a job and joins the other former Twins looking for work that the Twins will invite to spring training: David Hale, Buddy Boshers, Mike Morin, Blake Parker, Ryan Eades.

Ummm... about that...

Just a formality to make way for his extension.

And I'm actually ok with this. From a numbers standpoint, I doubt we find 4 guys better.

Yeah, easily replaceable, but not with Gonsalves or Stewart any longer.

I liked the Perez signing last year (or was that earlier this year? ) and for the first couple of months it looked like an amazingly canny move ... but ugh, that nasty second half of the season did him no good. So yeah, I agree with the others; at this point it's time to move on and look for other possible reclamation projects. Or better yet, how about a true ace? I know, I know, but I keep dreaming.

Guys who have been dropped already from the 40-man, considered as replacements, tells you all you need to know about how low Pérez's standing had dropped. I liked Martín, as I thought he had an excellent demeanor on the mound. But the results were just not there. As the headline states, "no surprise."
