I'm not sure how people can defend Sano after watching these ABs. He isn't close to hitting anything and I believe he's struck out 10 times in the last 4 games while only starting 3 of them. I can't wait for Thrylos to tell me about his great OPS and why I should stop complaining.

 

 

On the other hand, Kohl Stewart has looked very good thus far. Much better than Odorizzi, surprisingly.

Dude, I am totally lost when it comes to stats, especially the new ones today. I know they have relevance and what not but when you watch most of the games, your eyes are sometimes just as good at judging what the heck is going on. I’m with you, he’s totally lost. Kinda looks like buxton did at times before this year. Needs a total reboot

Hate to admit it but I'm a little disappointed that Sano didn't just fall on Gore instead of tagging and dodging, because hey, one less chess piece on the board for the Royals this series...

I think a lot of us have become smitten with OPS, which is a great stat, but HRs boost it so much that you can mash a few HRs and look horrendous in the rest of the PAs and you couldn't tell by the stat. I've recently come to appreciate the OPS stat more the past year or two, but it's not perfect. I don't feel like it rewards players enough just for simply getting on base and avoiding outs - for example, check out Ichiro Suzuki's career OPS - it's shockingly low for a Hall of Fame player!

To go further with your point, he’s homered in 6 different games this year. The scores of those games:

Can’t hold it against the guy, a homerun is a homerun, but not exactly like they came in tight games.

I'm starting to get concerned... it seems the lineup really needs Byron and Marwin, and some of our guys having career years have regressed. Every team is going to slump, but this needs to end as soon as possible.

 

But I also think it's not right to point fingers at Baldelli yet. The laid-back approach seemed to work, and it's not time to abandon ship after a poor week of baseball. Maybe he'll crank up the workouts and work the players a little harder, or maybe they're just in a funk. Whatever it is, we aren't going to win 110 games and we aren't currently the best team in baseball - but this is a good team and they should rebound... the only question is how soon.

Then you might be interested in this new stat I constructed.

 

I call it "On Base Percentage", OBP for short, and baseball-reference.com already is showing it. I hope it really catches on!

 

Polanco, Garver and Cruz lead the Twins in OBP, confirming our suspicion that they have been good on offense this year.
