Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I thought I would start a discussion on the Twins 40 man roster decisions as the deadline for adding players is just 32 hours from now (Tuesday, November 20, 8 pm). I wrote about the options a couple of weeks ago ,and with it being so timely now, I think it'll be good to discus again here. You can even check out my polls on Twitter to vote if you want to. The Twins are currently at 36 players on their 40 man roster, though obviously that could change before tomorrow night too. Obviously we will create an article tomorrow night to discuss who was and wasn't added, officially. Here are the polls for the six players that will probably at least be considered: Nick Gordon: LaMonte Wade: Luis Arraez:https://twitter.com/SethTweets/status/1064574583943151616 Jake Reed: Nick Andersonhttps://twitter.com/SethTweets/status/1064578022676803585 Tyler Jay:
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I'm not opposed to adding some of the fringe bullpen arms like Anderson and Reed... ONLY if they replace other fringe bullpen arms like Duffey, Curtiss, and Busenitz. I have seen enough of Duffey and Busenitz to be relatively confident they won't put it all together. I'm not sure why Curtiss didn't get a chance last season. If they want to DFA him too I'm okay with it.
darin617 Verified Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Why has Robbie Grossman not been dropped yet? He's nothing special and outfielders are a dime a dozen. Also, not sure if I can ever recall seeing so many outfielders on the Twins 40 man. 7 seems a touch high for sure.

May as well hang on to Robbie to see if another club wants to deal for an OBP type guy. Chances are small, probably, but who knows. At a projected $4 million in arbitration he's most likely a non-tender candidate so you can free up his spot to sign free agents or participate in the Rule 5 draft.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I'd protect the three bats. I would have liked to have seen Reed, but considering there could have been justifiable reasons to give him a look each of the past three years and they never did, I can only assume the interest isn't universal. If I was going to protect one of those relievers, it'd be Anderson despite him having the thinnest pedigree, but he's already 27, I don't know that I'd be too eager to have him on the 40-man the rest of the winter. The one guy who I thought was eligible but I haven't seen anyone predict to be protected is Cody Stashak. After converting from a starter, he looks like he fits the new trend of multi-inning relievers who both miss bats and limit walks.

From my understanding Grossman can be dropped any time, so if they make a trade or sign a big free agent they can make room by dropping Grossman. The guys we're talking about here can't be dropped at a moments notice, barring a trade they have to remain on the 40 man through the off season.
Tomj14 Verified Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I am adding Gordon for sure, if for no other reason then to include him in a trade. He seems like a guy the Marlins would draft.Add Wade, Reed and probably Jay.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I don't see a scenario where an exposed Gordon is with the Twins after Rule V... so he's an add. Wade is a tossup. Arraez is another one that I'm not sure about, but I'd want to protect him if there's a chance he's taken. Yes to Anderson and Reed.No to Jay.
twinsfansd Verified Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I don't think anybody would draft Anderson because of his age. Tyler Jay did not look like anybody that could help another team last year. Some team could pick Reed if they see him different than the Twins do, but I think control seems to still be his issue. I would protect all three bats. What about Johan Quezada? Saw where he is getting some press for his big arm.
rdehring Verified Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I have been looking at the current 40-man before thinking about who gets added. Right now it is at 36 with 22 pitchers and 14 position players. They have only 4 infielders, thus, either 3 or all 4 of the open spots will eventually be infielders. Should they add Gordon and Arraez, the remaining 2 spots will eventually go to the 2 infielders they need to add to next year's 25-man roster. I say eventually, because they may fill the roster now with the intent of releasing/assigning/trading either an outfielder or pitcher at a later date when they sign/trade for those two guys. With 7 outfielders on the roster, I see the addition of Wade as a trade off with either Granite or the guy they just picked up a few weeks ago. If he is added, one of those two is gone. As for adding pitchers, I see a pitcher being removed for each addition. With that said, I don't see all that many players added. Maybe four or five at the most. There are 10 pitchers who remain prospects. If pitchers are added, some of those will be gone. Your guess is as good as mine which it will be.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Interesting to see the answers up there... I guess people are not familiar with Arraez, what he brings on the table, and how close to the MLB he is, lets say compared to Nick Gordon...
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I am definitely interested if there is a purge on the 40 man... Some may be shuffling chairs on the Titanic, like switching Wade for Granite. Other moves may be more appealing.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 Add the three bats and Jay. Do not participate in rule 5. Arraez and Gordon should be locks. The middle infield is too thin and they both are so young. They would be easy adds for other teams. They will need to clear spaces later when they add at least two bats and three pitchers in free agency. Wait until then to designate players like Granite or Duffey.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 I like Granite and feel he'll probably have a nice return in 2019. But I think Wade may have more upside. Yes to both Gordon and Arraez. To give up on Gordon at this point is kind of silly. No to Jay, unfortunately. I doubt anyone drafts him and he could be back, but he's been passed up at this point. I'm still intrigued by Reed and would say yes. Nothing against Anderson, but somebody needs to be off the list. Unless there is a purge of sorts, you need roster space for future signings so I probably leave him off.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 i think Jay is easier to roster as a rule 5. He pitches left handed and has a favorable platoon split. He could have a role as a LOOGY to go with the mop up role that most rule 5 relievers are given. I would protect him over the other two relievers. I am not sure any of the three need to be protected.
Twins33 Verified Member Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 Add the hitters. Anderson I'd be fine with either way. No to the others.
tvagle Verified Member Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 Nothing official...but the 40-man Toolkit (which pulls from the MLB.com team rosters) shows the following already added to 40-man INF Nick GordonOF LaMonte Wade Total now at 38 Seems to me those moves have been made

beckmt Verified Member Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 I would add all three of the players and maybe let one player DFA (Granite or Curtiss or Buesnitz). Duffey and some of the rest can be DFA'ed as we add players this winter.

I think Celestino is probably a given too. Not sure Jax is... But good thing they have another year to wait on this group. Right now, it might just be that Gordon and Wade get added. That puts them at 38 and as they add free agents, there are certainly plenty of guys that they can drop at that time.

With Busenitz/Duffy/Curtiss already on the 40...couldn't the Twins add Reed/Jay and then DFA one of the first group with any signing? Same goes for adding Davis/Arraez and drop Granite/Reed/Grossman for signings or to add younger players that need to be added to 40-man in trade?

They just can't drop the guys they add until sometime in spring training. They aren't going to DFA Reed. And Gorssman can come off when they do the tenders/non-tenders, if they need to.

I was saying they could drop existing 40-man players Duffy/Busenitz/Curtiss or are they locked in until ST just like anyone added?
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2018 Posted November 20, 2018 Gordon and Wade made sense. The rest are fringe types anyways and it's not worth wasting a 40 man spot right now.

They can drop those guys anytime. But that's why teams don't just add guys to add guys, because the new adds can't be subtracted. So as they should, teams will keep those borderline guys on the roster so that they can be dropped when a free agent is signed and the spot is needed.
