Game Thread: Twins v Royals Doubleheader, 5/21 - Gm 1@1:10pm, Gm 2@tbd

After the fiasco of 10,000 and 1 Game Thread ideas, I thought I'd look for another source to crib from, I mean, another way to come up with an opener for a game thread. As luck would have it, I ran across the “Dwight Yoakam” method and decided to give it a whirl.

As I was using the “Dwight Yoakam” method, (“face a white wall and beller”) My wife poked her head through the door, gave me “the eye” and asked why in the world I was making all that racket. I tried to explain and she said that while she was sure that game threads are important, she was equally sure the neighbors didn't appreciate me hollering at the top of my voice at the moon at 3am, no matter how much it might help start the creative juices flowing. She also asked why I couldn't pursue quieter forms of inspiration such as the one used by Irish  poets and singers.

Some people just don't appreciate creative geniuses and their methods.

The Twins are doing their best to put last year in the rear view mirror. But, as the warning on those mirrors say, “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.” Yes, it's been a great ride and completely unexpected. But, as a fan, I don't want to count my worms before they catch fish. I'm along for the ride and just enjoying the scenery. But, as they said in “George of the Jungle,” Watch out for that treeee!”

Some things to think about:

1. Why do side view mirrors exist any more on cars? Why not use cameras and heads-up display? Why ruin the profile of a perfectly good Corvette with mirrors?
2. Umpires: Never mind, let's not think about umpires.
3. Knothole days: Where have they gone? Even the Dome had knothole days. But Target field? Nope, it's “fan appreciation” day.
4. Beer sausage..smoked...mmmm...
5. Guinness.
5a. Jameson.

This thread is for both games of the double header.

Lineups to follow.

Pitchers:

Game 1

MN: Phil Hughes

KC: Ian Kennedy

Lineups:

Twins:

1. Brian Dozier ® 2B
2. Joe Mauer (L) 1B
3. Miguel Sano ® 3B
4. Max Kepler (L) RF
5. Kennys Vargas (S) DH
6. Eddie Rosario (L) LF
7. Jorge Polanco (S) SS
8. Jason Castro (L) C
9. Byron Buxton ® CF

Game 2

MN: Adalberto Mejia

KC: Jake Junis

*mlb.com has the pitching reversed, in that Hughes and Junis are starting Game 1. I used Baseball Press for my source.

**And, to completely confuse things, Baseball Press has Hughes starting both games. I say if Hughes can do it, go for it!

I'll be at the game today - the first one, that is.

Just wondering, are the Twins calling up Mejia as the 26th man or did they call him up yesterday?

I believe Mejia was supposed to pitch yesterday and his start got pushed back.

With regard to Knothole Days, now that ballpark perimeters are constructed with Trex nobody knows what a knothole is anymore.

I don't think they officially recalled Meíja, so they can recall him today. They can option after the game, but recall him at any time, meaning they will only have three starters on the roster after the nitecap. A starter will have to be added on Monday unless the club wants to go to Haley or Wilk from the bullpen. Meíja could be recalled for the next start, but then requiring someone to be taken off the active roster.

If I was anywhere near the cities, I'd take in a couple games today. Nothing like a good doubleheader.  Still raining up north here. It just never ends.

Still raining here too. I'm right there with ya on the double header, unfortunately my wife has other ideas. I'll be at the first game, Mother Nature allowing.

I'm going to break in the new couch today by watching the Twins and trying not to die from a hangover!

Be very careful. New couches and hangovers are mutually exclusive. I was banished from our new couch for an entire season after I spilled a little Pepto Dismal on it.

You mean the wife didn't appreciate the bubblegum pink stain on the couch?

I'd like to stay for both games, but my dad's not gonna want to. I hope it stops raining soon...

yikes. tommy milone just coughed up five runs before getting an out. angels 5, mets 0.

Maybe he'll be on the waiver wire soon. We need another starter, right?

My eighth visit to Target Field under the Spring Season Pass. I'm 3-4, so after today's true doubleheader, I'll be somewhere between 3-6 and 5-4.

A lot hangs in the balance. Do a better job of rooting than you have done so far. :)

I was 6-3 and wore size elevens in high school. Now I'm 6-1 and wear size thirteens. I don't like where this is heading.

Remember the Ex-Cubs Factor? That jinx seemingly applied only to the post-season. Whereas, the Ex-Twins Factor is the gift that keeps giving, all season long!

I would really appreciate better play at home. It has been a blast watching the team so far, but they play like a different (worse) team at home. I hope the walk-off sparked something.

Well, what helped was the runs were given up early, allowing the Twins time to climb back in the game. Although, bottom of the ninth is leaving it a bit late....
