Twins get another first round pick

There are still three free agents who declined qualifying offers (Trumbo, Bautista, and Encarnacion) that could move the picks down if they sign with new teams. That would give the Twins #1, #38, and #40 as the worst case.

If the levels were the same as last year (which is doubtful, right?), those picks would be worth $9.0mm, $1.7mm and $1.6mm. Through the 10 rounds, the Twins would have $15mm

for their entire pool. Golden opportunity to go under slot with the first pick and get at least 2, maybe 3 top ten talents, a la Houston.

Agreed, although I think I heard it was less this year because of the new CBA.

very rarely does 1 overall sign for slot, so the idea of loading up on talent with a huge bonus pool makes tons of sense.... hopefully they can get it done...

knowing our luck though, there will be a clear cut 1 overall guy represented by Boras... then again, that might not be a bad thing if said guy is a pitcher or the next A-Rod (minus the roids and personality) at SS.

A lot will depend on exactly how the money gets distributed under the new CBA, but if past years are any guide then there is little reason for them to not come away with a consensus top-20 talent with their second pick.

Another thought: Colorado and Baltimore are both trying to win now, and they both have competitive balance picks (though in the B round). I think the Twins should target those picks if they trade with them.

The new CBA is done (unless there was some sort of side agreement to keep working on this)....  I don't think much was changed with the draft.  Bonus pool rules changed with international free agents a bit, but I think this is largely unchanged.

well, if the Twins ended up with both Stewart and De Leon, I'd think pretty hard about sending Santiago away for a comp pick... then again, I don't want Santiago in pinstripes at all.

The slot distribution changed so that it isn't weighted as heavily toward the top picks. But I don't know what the exact change is. I haven't seen anyone distribute last year's slot values using the new rules, for example. But I have read that the top pick will get $1M-$2M less than last year.

Santiago isn't worth a comp pick, unless the Twins pick up some salary iMO

Personally, I'd be fine with that.  I didn't want to tender the guy in the first place.

me either. The whole thing was stupid, id honestly rather have Nolasco and Meyer back at this stage.

Who wants to bet, if he is available, that Sam Carlson is either the comp pick or the 1st pick in the 2nd round? He is on the top prospect lists for a reason, and even though he is a hometown kid, he has the ability.

Couple of the names stood out.  Did not see any burning desire for any of the top players.  High School pitchers seem to be the top of the list and am not sure I want to spend 5 years developing one.  There did not seem to be any sure #1 pitchers in this draft.  Take the best player and hope.  Twins should get 3 or 4 good ones at least.

Santiago isn't worth a comp pick even if the Twins picked up the entire salary. With that being said Santiago on a one year deal is exactly the type of pitcher the Twins need right now. He is just there to eat innings (and not kill the Twins in the process) until something better comes along.

Hopefully that something better is Mejia (1/2 season plus away), Gonsalves (at least 1/2 season away) and DeLeon (trade?).

Greene (hs pitcher) and Kendall are the only ones with future 60 grades. If Greene is as good as people think he can be, he could be worth it.

Otherwise, after him, I could see the Twins taking college guys with their next couple of picks. Unless of course they LOVE the potential out there.

I'm really hoping the Florida pitcher  - Faedo - has a big  year.  I want us to draft a top line pitcher who is fast to the majors and would rather trust a college arm over a HS one.

I get that HS pitchers can take longer, but would you rather have Urias right now (hint, he's 19), or some random college pitcher?

I too hope some college ACE becomes the obvious #1 pick, or that JJ Schwartz hits like Mauer.....but I wouldn't die if it was Greene.

I'm so glad Terry Ryan is no longer in charge.

If he pitches great this year, I could see it happening too. He had surgery on both knees recently, but that wouldn't stop me if he pitches like an ace this year.

I think we could get a top college pitcher at #1, save a little slot space to find some upside with our other top 50 picks.

That, or, take the best guy in their mind available at #1, and then with two more picks in the top 40, someone is bound to fall due to contractual needs.

This year, with a Dozier trade, potential Ervin trade at some point, and the draft; their farm system will get a nice jolt. Hopefully winning can start again at some point.

I'm not a fan of going HS pitcher #1, nor are there any college hitters worth the #1 pick at this point. I'm all aboard the Faedo train at this point. Toot Toot!

Jeren Kendall is the consensus top college hitter. If they take a college hitter, it would be him. I've heard Brett Gardner/Jacoby Ellsbury comps, for whatever that is worth. Needs to strike out less. Will be fun to watch him this year too.

Florida plays at Vanderbilt April 13-15 2017. That would be a fun road trip. #2, #4, #5 and #19 on the mlb pipeline list.

Oh, sure. If Greene is clearly the BPA, take him.  I'm just hoping that it's the college pitcher instead.

(And I'm not sure Urias is a fair comp - Urias has been in a ML system since 2013.  There have been US drafted HS pitchers quick to the majors, too).

Faedo?  That name smacks of a legacy pick! :)
