Welcome to the beginning of the holiday festivities. My family and I got to miss yesterday's loss in exchange for a 7 hour drive up to the middle of nowhere in Northern Michigan. The drive was much like the Twins season:  long and painful with the destination being hell on earth. So now I'm spending the weekend with a bunch of Tigers fans who think WAR is something we need to declare on the rest of the world.  Did I mention they are all Tigers fans?

 

Enough about my misery. The Twins attempt to end a 3 game losing streak, but at the same time hold a comfortable 2 game lead for the top pick in the 2017 draft. Tyler Duffey takes the mound attempting to improve what has been a dismal season for him.  American league hitters seemed to have finally figured the young pitcher out.  After an impressive 2015 and a decent start in 2016, Duffey has looked much more hittable.  On the other hand, the Rangers are toeing the mound with Chi Chi Gonzalez. The 24 year old was pretty decent last year in 14 games and 10 starts posting an MLB ERA of 3.90. Like Duffey, he ended up starting the year in AAA.  His 2016 hasn't been as good, posting results in AAA far worse than his career norms.  He was shelled for 5 runs in 5 innings in his only start this year. Gonzalez originally attended Oral Roberts school of Dentistry, but after learning he did not have the fine motor skills to drill teeth, nor the excessive desire to inflict pain on others that is a pre-requisite to all dentists, he decided to pursue a baseball career instead. He was good enough to get drafted in the 1st round in 2013 by the Rangers.

 

Things to think about...

 

Well, the mood at TD is rather somber, so let's think about positive things.

 

1. Puppies - It's hard not to like puppies. After all, dogs are the one species more likely to show unconditional love than any other species. Cats on the other hand, are nothing more than pure evil taking physical form. I have two puppies in my avatar, though to be fair, neither are technically puppies anymore. The husky has passed on a few years back at the ripe old age of 16 while the black one just turned 11.  He's like the Minnesota Twins of dogs, cowering at loud noises and running away when someone comes home at a late hour. The only exception is deliver trucks...  Clearly those came directly from the pit of hell. We replaced the husky with a Doberman-Rottweiler mix. You'd think given the breeds that she would be a decent guard dog, but alas, her only skill is licking someone to death, and considering all the things she deems as 'food,' death is likely to come from bacterial poisoning. At 90ish pounds, she looks formative, but she is really just a big softy that doesn't know her own strength.

 

2. Blowing things up -  No, not the Twins front office, though that may be a positive as well. Explosives are fun.  Guns are fun. Now before you think I'll go all crazy on someone, we are up in the middle of nowhere where we can go shoot guns and launch fireworks on a large amount of private land with no one else around and no alcohol to prevent 'hold my beer and watch this' moments. So fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your perspective, this mod will likely still be moderating come July 5. 

 

3. Independence - Politics in this country is probably the one thing that people get more upset about than the main forum on Twins Daily. On Monday, it will be the two hundred fortieth anniversary of our nation's freedom. In some sort of strange American thing, we celebrate this by drinking large amounts of alcohol and setting off explosives.  Now that I think about this, I'm really wondering how it is America's population continues to grow.

 

4. Lakes - Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes, which is odd given that they have over 20,000 lakes 5 acres in size or more. Michigan is also the land of 10,000 lakes, having 11,000 lakes of 5 acres in size or more. People in Michigan claim to live in God's country, and that they can make it that way by putting the title 'grand' in front of every other city name, road name, or outhouse, and of course they named their great lake after their state. Minnesotans are a bit more passive aggressive, naming their great lake 'Superior.' I'll be out on a lake for a good chunk of the weekend, which as a positive means I won't be watching the Twins. Unfortunately, I'm sure my father in law will be have the Tigers on his Tivo. 

 

5. Vacations - Vacations are nice. There's nothing quite like a 5 day weekend, and that comes from a person who likes his day job. Regardless, time off from said job has its perks as well.

It's a beautiful day! Much to nice to sit inside and watch a ballgame, so either see it in person, or listen on the radio while fishing, golfing, or girl watching at the beach. Wait............I'm not so sure the Twins on the radio at the beach would be any good for girl watching, they'd keep their distance.

My goodness. The Twins have handed the Rangers 3 double play groundballs and they somehow failed at all 3. Wow...

Clear evidence the Rangers FO should be purged. :)

Duffey needs to stand taller on the mound. He's stooping over, which results in a round-house motion that flattens out his curve ball. Stand tall, square off that front shoulder, drive towards home. That'll get his release point a few inches higher, and allow his fingers to snap over the ball, not around the outside. Duffey needs to get vertical tilt on his curve, that's what gets all the whiffs.

I keep telling him that.  For some damn reason he won't listen.  Maybe I should post somewhere other than Twins Daily??

Duffey is now standing taller on the mound. Problem solved. He looks great when he stands upright. Better snap, harder to read, better downward slant. Now we might see him put up a bunch of 0's. 

 

Good thing the Twins coaches follow this thread!
