“I believe the young man’s going to hit. I do,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Murphy this week at the winter meetings. “I don’t necessarily think he’s a 25- to 30-home run guy, but I think he’s going to hit, and I think he’s going to be productive.”

I totally agree with part of Joe Girardi's assessment. I too don't necessarily think he’s a 25- to 30-home run guy.

That Escobar AB was an example of why stats don't tell the whole story about offense, and why RBI is still a valuable measure of a player's offensive contribution.

There might not be an easier pitcher to hit a fly ball off than Capuano, and Escobar K's without ever seeing a strike.  So overeager, so terrified to take a pitch with 2 strikes.

That's a situation where a good MLB hitter knows he has the advantage, and uses it.  A poor hitter puts himself into a position where he gives away the advantage to the pitcher.

Because Hicks is equally terrible?

Yeah, and if anything about the twins has been true so far, it's that the outfield defense has been really good and hasn't cost them a single win or two or three.

At this point, is there any reason not to send a runner at third?

Even as a straight steal of home?

Hell, if you're gonna be terrible and not score runs, do it with panache.

submit the tagline to marketing

"2016 Twins-not scoring... with panache!"

I'm sure some of us TD commenters can personally relate with that slogan.

As to Hicks, he'll outhit Murphy over the next few years, I'd bet a lot of money on that.

After he finally started to come around last season, we ship him away, lose his defense and get a guy producing not enough offense to even keep pace with Suzuki. Criticism, even at this early part of the season, is certainly valid.

Don't we already have a Murphy type at High A.  Just throw Brian Navarato out there to bat .091 and be good with the glove.  Bring back the little catcher from spring training who can battle at the plate and at least get a hit more than once out of 11 times.  Murphy is  a rally killer.  Practically an automatic out.  At this point I would rather see anyone else up there.  Where is Butera when you need him.  If only we could get him back things would be better than they are now.

The Twins' plan to use Santana at third and leave Sano in the outfield was reported by Dick without a hint of doubt that it's a sensible course of action.

Guess those two assists Santana recorded during his two appearances at third base in the minors must have really sold Dick and the Twins on his ability to play there.

We could really use his defense and his hit this year. I wish I could have typed the word "hits," but he has one single on the season.

I, for one, have seen enough of Hicks. His absence gives Rosario and Buxton longer leeshes and clears a path for Kepler to arrive sooner. More AB's for Arcia too. I don't believe his presence would have affected Sano's usage.
