h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 If Mastro really is wondering what he has to o to get a job, he might check his career offensive stats at BBRef. Agreed.... and obviously..... but I was referring to the "opportunity", or in reality, "non-opportunity" that spring training actually provides for many. Mastroianni surely did well - .407/.484/.481 with a .965 OPS - compared to others that got jobs, that is what I refer to. There was really no job for him to ever be competing for. If Spring Training is for new starts, and from this day forward, none of the past stats matter anyway, right? It is what one can do now and from this day forward. Except that is never really true even though that is the pitch. Murphy/Hicks/Centeno is another example. Murphy has to make the team, whether he earned it or not, just because Aaron Hicks was traded for him. Spring has not been kind to the three namer.

DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 All the proper moves. It is a little bit fun to see the roster almost set, but have something to chew on for the next week: the final rotation spot and the final couple bullpen spots. They are intertwined, to be sure. And still the biggest question marks to begin the season. (Sigh)
bird Verified Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 (edited) Hopefully they honor their word and let him walk if he wants to. "Room for you going forward" could mean a number of things. Im hoping one of them isn't "stuck in Rochester until your opt-out because we might have an injury."You would hope that they had that conversion before putting the transaction through, anyway. But, you never know with this front office. A few players (some still on the team) have had their share of grievances over the years. In fact, we DO know with this front office. We know that they honor their word. This reputation is clearly why guys like Quentin and Sweeney are willing to trust "gentlemen's agreements" with the club. And it's why guys like Sweeney express gratitude for how the Twins treated him, and why player sentiment in general is favorable towards this organization with very few exceptions, which get brought up ad nauseum with absolutely no attempt at fairness. bird Verified Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Thankful the Quentin experiment is over. Now they can quit wasting at bats on him. He is a total joke anywhere in the field now. Maybe he can get a job starting fights and breaking arms somewhere. Mastroianni must wonder what he has to do to get a job (not that any of the hopefuls really had a shot at making the roster, anyway). Tonkin needs to get a job in Korea or Japan, because he cannot play above AAA ball here. O'Rourke? Too bad not everyone bats left handed for him. The future and the present is the youth. Let's get on with it and stop this tired old vet waiting room gambit. Looking back at some opening day rosters in the last years, it is truly amazing. Why just last year... Jordan Schafer started the year in center field! And for real horror....... check out the 2013 starting rotation!http://www.twinkietown.com/2015/4/3/8339303/2015-twins-opening-day-roster The flaw in your thinking regarding Maestro is that decisions get made on the basis of what happens in a few spring games, and that all the rest of what goes on in camp, the billion things you and I don't see, are meaningless. Maestro likely didn't get the job because the judgment is that others are likely to contribute more to the team. His performance during games probably helped him make a stronger case, but it should be pretty clear to the Twins (and to us, frankly) that Maestro has certain limitations. They show up every year over the course of a season. Had he made the team, we'd have some grumpy TD'ers I think.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 his last MLB season (2014): .177/.284/.315 slash linehis only 5 games in the PCL last season before traded to Altanta and released: .176/.263/.235Subuterrean OPS does not grow on trees. I'd rather see Vargas/Kepler get those 275 PAs; higher likelihood of success for the TwinsI concur OPS does not grow on trees. Quentin wasn't healthy in 2014, nor last year. He did put up OPS's of .855, .877, .838, and .821 the four previous years. Health is obviously a huge question, and wouldn't be helped by playing OF and/or 1b once or twice a week. But I do believe if he's healthy, he'll end up helping some big league team this year. Vargas might be an option (although if both get 250 PAs my money would be on Quentin out hitting Vargas), Kepler not so much. Kepler isn't going to be a bench player this year. Oxtung 1

As was stated earlier Sano is going to be bad defensively and a late inning defender could prove very useful. In addition Buxton is going to need days off (or perhaps even end up at AaA sometime this season). IMO I'd rather have Mastroianni than Santana in that role who is not a good defender and frankly might not hit any better than the Maestro either. DJSim22, alarp33 and h2oface 3

I never said that he should make the team. Not once. Nor did I feel I inferred it. I was empathizing with how I assume he felt. The sentence in the post that you responded to was about the fact that there was no chance for him to make the team, no matter what he did in the short spring training, and that the pitch to the players that there might be, is bogus. I read it back. I can't see how it can be missed, especially with the second post (#31) just after the one you responded to clarifying that. But I will work on my delivery. So sorry I have confused you, and any others that seemed to think I was saying Mastroianni should have made the team. He was always signed for injury depth.
