Storen/Revere Trade

Tonight, it was announced that the Washington Nationals have traded reliever Drew Storen to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for OF Ben Revere.

 

This is interesting to Twins fans in a few ways:

 

1.) Ben Revere was a 1st round draft pick and a fan-favorite with the Twins.

2.) Drew Storen is a name that has been brought up here as a possible trade target of the Twins. Those hopes appear over.

3.) The Nationals appear to really like former Twins centerfielders. Just a day after Denard Span decided to leave the Nationals as a free agent to join the San Francisco Giants for 3 years and $31 million (plus a fourth-year option).

All Revere had to do was get to first with the number of big hitters behind him in Toronto. I don't think that will play as well in Washington.

Well, if they wanted a CF, then I don't see the Twins as partners as soon as Hicks left town. I don't think Revere is that good of a baseball player personally.

Revere's skill set is actually perfect for small ball although the Nats aren't a small ball team either.

Good luck to Ben - he seems to get too much criticism from Twins fans - the teams that want him now include three besides the Twins.  The biggest thing for the Twins is that TR now does not have to answer questions about Storen.  Soon the other relievers will be gone and TR can tell us how the Twins were really close on a number of them.

I tend to agree, though- a lot of fans complained about the pick, but he's doing pretty well compared to other high draft picks.  Good pick, and I'd rather have Trevor May so I'm pleased with how it worked out.  Now if we could only have May starting...

 

All the movement of Hendricks, Valencia, Revere reminds me of a John Mellencamp lyric- women seem to like me, but they don't seem to like me long.  I am glad my employer doesn't trade me at all, much less twice in a calendar year.

If anything, you do know what you have in Ben Revere and can work around him accordingly. Is that good, or is that bad? They lost Span, who many felt wasn't worth a three-year deal at this time (except the Giants). He's an inexpensive, for now, option in centerfield. And, yes, we don't have to devise trades for Storen now. Surprised that Toronto will include another player AND money in the deal.

Extremely disappointed that the Twins could not offer a better deal than what the Blue Jays offered. I'm with diehard. I don't think Revere is that great of a baseball player, and he's due to get over $6.5 mill in arbitration according to MLB Trade Rumors. The Blue Jays got a steal in this trade.

When healthy, the Nationals have a pretty stout lineup as well with Harper, Rendon, Werth, Zimmerman, Murphy, etc. It's not Donaldson, Bautista, and Encarnacion, but the Blue Jays also don't have Scherzer, Strasburg, Gonzalez, and even Joe Ross.

Revere followed by Harper could get you a couple runs per game.

Revere has had 3 years in a row with a BA of over .300.

Last year his OBP was .342.

 

Those are pretty good numbers from a CF who covers as much ground as Ben does.

 

We're not talking about how well a RF hits here.

The guy is very productive at the plate considering what he brings to the defense.

Revere: 4.7 overall WAR in the last three years.  In the last three years, while playing defense, he has accumulated -24 DRS, and about a -4.0 UZR, in the OF.

 

In the last three years while playing CF, he has accumulated -22 DRS with a negative UZR in 2,028 innings.  Doesn't bring much to defense regardless of his speed.

Why couldn't the Twins use Storen as a closer too? Perkins in the 7th-8th inning is a good problem to have.

That would be cold. Perkins has been better every year since 2011 until the second half last year (and Storen didn't exactly close out gangbusters).

Depends on Perkins' ego. If it would be a huge problem and turns into a clubhouse issue that his role is not the closer, it's probably not worth the risk. If Perkins is willing to take on any role that makes the team better (like what May is doing), then it's worth the upgrade.

In 2015, Storen had an ERA  of 1.73, had 29 saves, and only two BS (and they won both those games) when he had his job taken from him. He was getting the job done.

Storen is perfectly fine, but I want more than a half season to say Perkins is no longer better.

 

If the standard is merely someone "getting the job done" why not just keep Jepsen in the spot.

The idea that getting the job done isn't good enough is what prompted the trade for Capps to replace Rauch in 2010 and the loss of Ramos. Just saying.  

 

In any event, the numbers suggest Storen was doing more than just getting the job done.

If Revere can continue to get on base at .350 clip, this might be a great fit now that Cespedes is in the lineup.  That outfield might hit 80 HR's next with all 80 coming from Cespedes and Harper.
