Details still sketchy, but it appears that the Chicago White Sox will acquire All Star 3B Todd Frazier in a three-team trade involving the Reds and Dodgers. More to come, I'm sure...

To the Dodgers: Micah Johnson, Trayce Thompson, Frankie Montas

To the Reds: Jose Peraza, Brandon Dixon, Scott Schebler

The White Sox had to fulfill their crave for a NL slugger.

Now, Todd Fraizer is better than Adam Dunn and Adam LaRoche, but still, they sure like their NL power hitters.

All three players they gave up seem to be consensus top 10 prospects in the White Sox system.

Montas and Johnson in the 3-5 range and Thompson in the 8-10 range

Fun Fact: Tryace Thompson is the brother of Golden State's Klay Thompson.

This is pretty obviously a sign of fear and desperation by the Sox. I mean, one obviously doesn't just sit back and not respond to Trader Terry's big move of bringing back Darin Mastroianni.

Frazier's only under contract for two years, but I think the Sox did pretty good here. I know Thompson put  up some big numbers last year after his call up, but in the minors, he was largely pedestrian, he hadn't even had a season with a .750 OPS since 2012 when he spent most of the year in A ball.  I think the Dodgers got all of Joc Pederson's bad traits here with a much, much lower ceiling.

The only thing I am sure about this trade is that it should be a lesson for teams......if you aren't good enough to win, this year or next, DON'T WAIT to trade your players. The Reds lost serious value here, as they have with others. I wonder if Milwaukee is paying attention......

I love it, sarcasm at it's finest!

Like the trade a lot for the Sox. Kind of surprised that is all Frazier would get.

Yeah, Frazier is a top 3-4 3B in all of baseball... thought they could get more. I think it's a great trade for the Sox.

He was terrible in the 2nd half last year: .220/.274/.390 (.664). He only posted a .309 OBP for the year too.

I'm not sure most "experts" agree with this assessment.

Which part?

1.) Frazier is a top 3-4 3B in MLB?

2.) Thought they could have got more?

3.) Sox won the trade?

Sorry, meant to put that they don't agree with the Frazier is that good part.

edit: to be fair, KLAW agrees with you, mostly.

I'd say Todd Frazier is more in the top 8-10 range among 3B.

The Sox better hope that he's the guy from the first half of the year because the guy from the second half is below replacement level. I'd say this trade is probably worth the risk though.

Frazier is a really nice player...durable, likely to hit 30 HRs and play solid defense. But are the White Sox really this close to being a contender? The 3 prospects they traded away might not be "great" prospects but they are very solid. They may have just weakened their future for...what? Finishing middle of the pack?

The Sox have Sale....and Abreu.....I think they are deciding they need to win while those two are there. It may be a bad decision, it may not. But I think that is their thinking here. Frankly, none of those prospects are super exciting to me (though they are perfectly adequate prospects who might be good).

Looks like a great deal for the Dodgers

Yeah, the Dodgers basically exchanged Peraza for Montas.  I guess Peraza is OK, but the Dodgers don't seem to need him, he was just a trade chip they were able to pry from the Braves recently.

As Mike says, they have Sale and Abreu, plus Eaton, Quintana, Rodon, Robertson, etc.  Montas looks pretty good, but the White Sox strength right now is pitching.  The other two guys are pretty "meh".  They got what looks like a very durable, 4-5 WAR player at a position of need.

Here is Frazier's WAR tally among qualifed 3B the last 4 years.  Also added Plouffe.

Last 4    14.8 WAR (10th).   Plouffe 21st

Last 3.    12.2 WAR (8th).  Plouffe 16th.

Last 2     9.1 WAR (5th).     Plouffe 11th.

Last year   4.4 WAR (8th).  Plouffe 14th.

You get a top 10 player at his position, which is relatively thin and dont' break the bank.  Hard to not say touche.

Their dad was one of my favorite Gophers. That was a great team. Too bad he tried to pick up some beer money selling his tickets. I was appalled, appalled mind you, that anyone would sully the amateur status of college athletics! Did I mention I was appalled?

I noticed you are new here? So it is understandable that you do not understand that this is a serious site, and sarcasm is highly frowned upon! :)
