Swarzak Outrighted off the 40 man roster

I believe that he should be able to become a minor league free agent with this decision, right? He's got plenty of time to have that right, I would think. I think he'd look to go elsewhere. Which is fine.

I was just about to post something about this.  I can't say it's too surprising after last year.

I would think there is a major league team that can use a long reliever that would pay him close to 1 million or give him a split contract.  One thing that Swarzak has going for him is he is a good team mate and willing to pitch whenever he is asked in any game situation.  So I hope he finds something.  Colorado could probably use him.

They need to open up a few more 40 man spots, Chris Collabello could easily be outrighted off the 40 man and nobody would claim him. Wonder if this signals that either Tommy Milone or Brian Duensing will be non-tendered. Those two contracts right there is potentially $5 million you could save to invest in somebody else. Twins have plenty of relievers that are coming up through the ranks that they can fill these three spots. I would take any money those two Milone and Duensing would make in to an offer for a starting pitcher.

I think Colabello 'could' get claimed.

I don't think it signals anything for Milone or Duensing at all. No relationship between the moves.

If anything, it decreases the odds of a non-tender for them.

I'm disappointed for Swarzak, just due to my thinking he had turned a corner with his career after that silly rib injury during the offseason two years ago.

Makes sense to me....both him being gone, and Pelfrey being in the bullpen.

I definitely agree with both of those points as well.

I've never been a fan of either, although I did like their willingness to pick up the ball whenever and however asked.  The thing about Swarzak is, his velocity actually picked up on most of his pitches, and he added a slider for 11% of his pitches, and it ended up being his most effective offering, but his overall results weren't there.  The average RPs BA is .238, K/9 is 8.46, while Swarzak had a BA of .286 and a K/9 of 4.92.  And that's pitching mostly in low-leverage situations. It seems apparent that a change of scenery might be the best thing to keep his career moving forward.

Very happy to hear about this, although I don't know why they couldn't have done it last week and protected somebody else from the Rule 5 Draft...

Darn good question.....anyone have a good idea why they'd do it this way? Because, James raises a good point (though maybe they don't want to protect anyone else....maybe there are two guys they want to claim now, and are making space?) ( I know, that's not a sentence).

I wasn't judging the validity of any decisions.....just that they don't (wouldn't) surprise me. I'm indifferent to who the long reliever is, other than in a more ideal world, he's a younger player that could start, but has options, and doesn't cost much. But, if you already have Swarzak and Pelfrey......I'd keep Pelfrey (on the tiny chance he's healthy) mainly because I have to pay Pelfrey even if I cut him.....

No Twins Daily law against Stream of Consciousness posts... I get what you're saying, and you and James are on to something...

Protecting an additional guy last week wouldn't have been entirely without consequence -- it would have guaranteed that player a 40-man roster spot into March, I believe.

So they could have protected, say, Gilmartin, but then if/when they add free agents, contenders, waiver claims, etc., they'd have to cut a different guy from the 40-man and they couldn't use the Swarzak/Gilmartin spot anymore -- they'd have to cut Duensing or whoever.

Now, most of us think there are still enough suspects on the 40-man to make it a moot point, but the Twins probably just didn't value any of the remaining Rule 5 eligibles as much as those suspects and having some flexibility with that roster spot.  Heck, they still may need to cut a few of those suspects too.

Maybe we're opening up a spot for the player that we're going to take in the Rule 5 Draft?

If Big Pelf is ineffective or DL'd at any point next year, think Alex Wimmers has a chance to fill that spot? Seems like the role he's being groomed for - long relief and spot starts. Decent numbers for Wimmers after his promotion to New Britain last year. Of course he would need to get an invite to major league camp and then pitch well enough to warrant a 40-man spot. Just a thought...

According to Doogie (via twitter), Swarzak has chosen to become a free agent.

Maybe Swarzak is hunting for a starting job?  Being a starting pitcher has been a big thing for him in the past.  Like Latroy Hawkins, he's a better reliever than starter, but hasn't accepted it, like Latroy.

Possibly this guy?:

Maybe the Twins are about to announce Torii Hunter is back in the fold with a new 2 year contract.

Besides a rule 5 draft spot or free space for a  free agent signing, the other option is they contacted Swarzak agent about him accepting a low offer, when they finally got back to the Twins and said no, they let him go. Swarzak role is the easiest to fill and he never got good enough to start or be trusted as a late inning option, so give it to Pelf, a rule 5 guys, some minor league free agent,  some other guy in the system whose earned a shot at being a big leaguer,  or a bullpen ace like Butera. :)

Make way for Mike Pelfrey, Long Reliever!

He could be pretty good in that role if healthy.

So many times he got tagged in the 5th or 6th inning.

If he could let it all out over 2 or 3 innings, he could rock.

Like Swarzak, and wish him well.

My guess is that Milone is the most likely to be retained now, since the Twins have a really good idea of what Duensing brings to the table. But they might keep both lefties, because hey, lefties!

My guess is that they would retain Duensing because they know what he brings to the table.
