Swarzak Outrighted off the 40 man roster

Maybe we're opening up a spot for the player that we're going to take in the Rule 5 Draft?

There are a couple of interesting names that will be available for the Rule 5, so having a couple of free spots for free agents, claims, or a Rule 5 pick.

Out of the three: Duensing, Milone and Swarzak, Anthony was probably the arbitration cheapest.

Here's a guy coming off a great 2013 out of the pen, still holding some mid-season worth, and the Twins braintrust has to be thinking about his future with the team,

He was still having a halfway decent summer, could've been flipped for a prospect and his bullpen spot given to Tonkin, anyone.

Then we have September. Let's look at Logan Darnell as a starter. Hell, yes, let's look at anyone else...but we drag out Swarzak (to drive up his own personal value perhaps) and he is horrible. He takes one for the team, but also for himself. Doesn't add any "possible starter" worth to his resume, which is something he has always wanted, but quickly learned that you pitch where they place you if you want to play in the majors.

Maybe no one cared, he ahd not worth as a bulklpen arm before trade or playoff roster deadlines.

But I am mad, mad that the Twins let him eat up innings in which we could see Oliveros, Achter, even Deolis Guerra, anyone...if you had even the slightest doubt that he would be a part of the team going into next season.

And then to let him start, like we allowed Jared Burton to close. What gives, Twins front office. You have players to see, to expose to major league life, and you are losing (and Swarzak sure wasn't a starter stopper).

And No! people. Colabello is a great stash on a minor league roster where he has the ability to tear up AAA pitching, but if the Twins cut him, doubt that a team would give a 40-man spot to him, and he still ahs options, so the Twins would be able to keep him. Of course, can be wrong. But he's 31-years-old! You can probably rtade peanuts for Garrett Jones, or talk to the A's, or even discuss Chris Parmelee with the Twins and come out more ahead. Colabello is/was a great story. I don't mind him being a abckup in the minors for another season (who else does the Twins have).

This kind of thing is why I wish the Twins would more aggressively shop their relievers during peak performances.  I doubt he would've fetched much, but the habit persists for guys like Fien, Burton, etc.

Or guys who would have fetched more, with some added foresight, ie, Jesse Crain, Matt Guerrier (the first tour), etc...

One of the reasons Swarzak and Burton got extended time in September was so that they could be evaluated for next season. Yes, you could give playing time to the young guys to see what they have, but you also have to evaluate the fringe players on the major league roster as well. Both Swarzak and Burton could have been brought back for 2015. The Twins were most likely getting a last look to see if they wanted to keep them around another year. Had they pitched well in the final months, they easily could have been brought back or traded. Their salaries would not have impacted the budget too much. They also could have been potential trade chips for the offseason. Now their spots on the roster will most likely be turned over to untested young players. Hopefully they can perform at least as well as the players they replaced.

This post needs a love button.......sums up my frustration with last year very, very well.

Swarzak was not bringing back a prospect.

No.  Swarzak was outrighted and refused assignment.   This implies that he was DFA'd and there were no takers.

I agree, but I think the greater point was, why is he taking up a roster space from one of the half dozen guys who are ready for MLB experience if the team was only going to outright him in the offseason.

Instead, maybe Guerra gets his look, shows enough to keep him on the 40-man and he doesn't end up leading Pittsbugh to the WS in 2016.  Too late now.

If they have an acquisition in mind, such as a Rule 5 player, then the timing doesn't really matter.
