Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 It's August 30th today, and tomorrow, the 31st, is the final day for trades. Does anything think there's a possibility of anyone getting shipped off today or tomorrow? Remember, Justin Morneau was traded away on the final day in August last season. Some candidates are:RP Jared BurtonRP Brian DuensingRP Casey FienOr there could be others. Who else could be shipped off?
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I would like to see a number of guys dumped from the 40-man to make room for some more: Eric Fryer, Burton, Florimon, Deduno, Pino moved to 60-day the dumped in offseason, Iberra. If they aren't going to be part of the picture in 2015, get rid of them today. If no one claims them, maybe you can possibly bring them back next year on minor league contracts. But this weekend should be get rid of the deadwood time.

Doubt they'd offer much, but Deduno doesn't fit in the long term plans. I'd probably give him to the Stros if they couldn't agree on something... Though that said, I wouldn't wish that on Deduno.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Rhett Bollinger @RhettBollinger 12mAnd to clarify, RHP Samuel Deduno was claimed on outright waivers and is now an Astro, per an MLB source. #MNTwins
howeda7 Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Kind of odd to just give him away. Is he Arbitration eligible next year? If so, it makes more sense.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Best wishes to Samuel. He'll probably get a pretty good shot to make their team next year. Perhaps he'll get another chance to start. There's something there, but what? five organizations haven't been able to get more than marginal productivity, and he's almost 31.

This is a player with no options left, blocking other minor league pitchers and taking up a valuable roster spot. He has served his time and was give ample opportunity to earn a more permanent job, he just was not reliable enough to hang onto one.
Lazarus Provisional Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I assume this means that te Twns are planning to add more guys to the 40 man for September call-ups. I'm okay with that - I didn't see SD fitting into the plans as they return to contention in 2016/17.
DuluthFan Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I wouldn't mind letting Parmalee and Florimon walk via waivers as well to clear up roster space. They both seem to have been replaced already on the roster.
TKGuy Provisional Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 No issue whatsoever with this, he hasn't really pitched much lately and is not part of the long term plans. Good to see some more 40-man space being freed up.
ashbury Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I'm sure a better thread will appear shortly, but I was surprised to find via MLB Trade Rumors that Samuel Deduno was placed on waivers and claimed by the Astros today. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/08/astros-claim-sam-deduno-from-twins.html
LewFordLives Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Does anyone have any info. on the corresponding move to the 25-man roster? According to the Red Wings website Alex Meyer is still scheduled to start tonight.

(Still on MN's too, but that will surely be corrected soon.)
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2014 Author Posted August 30, 2014 Can't lie, I'm feeling pretty smart right now for posting this topic right before Deduno was traded.
Guest Guests Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Well, I guess that's the end. Deduno abides. I don't know about you but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. Deduno. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners. Shoosh. I sure hope he makes the finals.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 And the winner is..... Aaron Thompson?
glunn Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I wonder why the Twins put him on non-revocable waivers. It would have been nice to get something in return. Maybe he made it through revocable waivers and there were no takers?

Kwak Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Just can't have too many RPs with gardenhire as your manager.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Just can't have too many RPs with gardenhire as your manager. Thompson's 10-season minor league odyssey and sketchy stat line seem to indicate he'll fit right in. Needing a "lefty who's getting lefties out" doesn't exactly sound like a vote of confidence for T-Bar and Deuce. Phil Miller @MillerStrib · 1m"We wanted to bring in a lefty who's getting lefties out," Gardenhire said of Thompson, who pitched 4 games w/Pirates in 2011, w/7.04 ERA.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Meyer can't get lefties out?
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Meyer can't get lefties out? I think so..... (This season Meyer vs. LHB 3.70 FIP 3.05 SIERA 12.19 K/9). There are also actual LHP in Roc. Darnell ( Major league stats vs LHB 2.45 FIP 0.77 SIERA 6.75 K/9). And Johnson (Major league stats vs. LHB 1.75 FIP 2.23 SIERA 9.31 K/9). But they're all needed for the stretch run in the IL. Oh, and there's this.... Mike Berardino @MikeBerardino · 59sI'm told #mntwins GM Terry Ryan left Rochester today and will not attend Alex Meyer's final regular-season start tonight. soooo..., a decision has already been made on Meyer, one way or the other:
oldguy10 Provisional Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Return to contention in 2016/2017? For the bottom of their division? That is more than likely.
big dog Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Rochester's season likely ends in a few days. The Twins are DOA. Personally, I'm happy to let the AAA players finish out a good and exciting season there and then bring them up. Ignoring that it's good for Rochester, it's probably good for them as well- let them finish what they've built.
Paul Pleiss Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Sammy Deduno, who embodied EFFECTIVELY WILD was as good at striking out guys as he was at walking them. Which doesn't play well as a starter, or out of the pen. But there was that World Baseball Classic magic... Thanks for the memories Sammy D, have fun getting cut by the Astros this winter.
ashbury Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Just can't have too many RPs with the current rotation.FTFY.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Deduno would be a free agent if he wasn't claimed anyways. Thompson would also be a free agent if they Twins option him out, so this is a looksee and if he shows some life, he could be one of those bubble guys to resign as a minors free agent again next year with a chance for a roster spot.
Oldgoat_MN Verified Member Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Thompson's SO/9 in his MLB career is 1.2. What can Anderson teach him that he doesn't already know?
