Dear Mr Ryan......

Why do you refuse to call up young bullpen arms, and insist on having guys on the roster your manager will not use?

Why are there so many bad bullpen arms? Why not try something else?

It's painful to see Thompson on the mound these days... Luckily Duensing has settled down nicely in Stauffer's old role of BOOIP: Blow out one inning pitcher. The clock is approaching midnight before the current bullpen is blown up.

Thompson for Theilbar is such a no-brainer there's no excuse for it to go on even another day. Tonkin for Oliveros or someone else needs to happen too. Right now you're keeping 8 pitchers, and 4 of them are utterly useless. (Thompson, Duensing, Tonkin and Graham to a lesser extent.)

The Twins bullpen has a 15.9% K rate. That's 1.5% less than the next worst club.

I imagine that number drops significantly once you take Perkins out of that equation?

I heard a snippet of Terry Ryan on Sunday's pregame show. It sounds like there is no rush recalling Santana. However, if the Twins are trotting Eduardo Nuñez out to shortstop regularly, I think there is room for Danny back in the majors. Santana played center field last night for the Red Wings. I wonder if this means the Twins see his eventual role as a utility player.

As far as left handed relievers go, I don't believe in Thielbar much. He managed to deceive hitters hit first trip around the majors, since then he hasn't been very good. At Rochester, he was terrible early (WHIP over 2.00), but has pitched much better lately.

If I'm GM, I give Duensing a little more time and trade off Thompson for Santana. However, I don't think anyone in the Twins' organization is the answer to left handed (non-closer) relief.

Time to start using E.Santana and D. Santana, it seems.

Either way, something has to happen in less than two weeks.

Santana in CF? The Twins still need a SS. Not another utility player. On top of that, Santana was very mundane out there. He was mostly given a pass because he was playing out of position. Nunez is a disaster waiting to happen. Santana has his flaws, but also is athletic, has a big arm, and has a chance to improve. The bullpen? I wouldn't give up on Tonkin just yet. Graham I would keep, preferably by trade, and in AAA. He has some stuff. Oliveras would be a start, but he is another of those unexplained players who the Twins refuse to use. I always think you can't become a AAAA player until you have had a chance to make yourself one.

The real LOOGY in the upper system is Ryan O'Rourke. He cannot be exposed to RH, though.

Thielbar isn't inspiring, but he is the necessary replacement for Duensing. Thompson did his job well through May and was overused.

Taylor Rogers is worth consideration.

Vs.LHB

K/BB 33/1      K/9 10.01     BA .165    WHIP 0.57

I'd agree with this.

Other than Rogers, and probably Achter, based on the stats alone, every reliever in AAA looks to be pretty much interchangeable with the majority of the relievers on the MLB staff. Oliveros can look great one night and awful the next, same with Thielbar. I'm not sure Tonkin, Pressly and Thompson, despite recent struggles and inconsistency, are worse bargains than the guys we could parade up here from AAA.

And why put it all on Ryan? Paulie was quoted as saying he thinks Thompson's results can pretty much change at any time, and other than Duensing, he's gotten fair results from the rest of them for decent stretches.

I'm thinking the solution probably lies with the net wave of guys now being refined in AA: Jones, Chargois, Peterson, Reed, Burdi. We'll need to be patient I guess.

I think Rogers is an obvious answer, the odds of him starting a game this year in MN are just about nil at this point, unless multiple players are not available. He dominates lefties, and can pass at getting out righties.

It is certainly possible that their other options are so bad the manager will refuse to use them in a game that matters.......but if the ones they have now are that bad (and apparently they are), why not change and see what happens?

And, Duensing was bad last year. He's worse this year. I don't get why they should give him more leash.....

I put it on the GM because, as far as we know, he's the one that sets the roster.

It's worth a shot to find out if there is LH help in AAA. Last night's game was pretty telling...the manager doesn't want to use his LH relievers.

Time for Meyer to get a big league bullpen spot too.

If Rogers can relieve, yes try it. We don't know if he can pitch every other day and get warmed up quickly. I would dispute Shane's assertion that Thompson was good in May. No, he was outstanding in April, but May was not good--13 hits in 9.2 innings. The deterioration has continued in June.

33/1 K/BB rate. Not good enough.

One walk!? Inconceivable! No walks or no majors!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Rogers a reliever when he played at Kentucky?

Forty-man castoffs are the way to go,

Dontcha know?

The grass is always greener on another team's roster,

Because our triple-A relievers have poor posture.

Walks are the devil,

Strikeouts are only a bonus.

Hits are on the level,

So long as homeruns don't own us.

Don't trade control for K's, not even a tad,

Let me be clear, walks are bad.

All you internet nerds know what I'm about,

For Battling-Your-Tail-Off is more important that an out.

But I swear I'm a hip, modern guy,

For my AOL account does not lie,

That there is no denyin',

That I'm Terry Ryan.

Nope, 3-year starter. You're probably thinking of Tyler Duffey.

I stand corrected! Thanks.

I endorse this plan. Cycle the lefties through to see if one pops as a LOOGY and call up Meyer.

As Mike said, "And, Duensing was bad last year. He's worse this year. I don't get why they should give him more leash.....I put it on the GM because, as far as we know, he's the one that sets the roster" . And gives arb to players that have no upside or are any better than in house milb players.
