  1. I don’t think it is wise to believe that his next two months will be as dependable as his previous two months. The sample is too small. Solano in a role starting against left handed pitching and ready on the bench against a right handed starting pitcher will play to his strengths. That might require Lewis to play 2B against a lefty.
  2. Sometime later this year I expect the same article about Kirilloff. Young players are going to struggle and go through some rough stretches. I would let both Lewis and Miranda work it out here. There is space for both with Kirilloff in RF. They don’t need to play everyday to develop. (Note: veteran’s go through rough stretches also but there are other discussions to address those concerns).
  3. I guess not but this is mostly a hindsight question. It takes multiple years of splits of slash stats to stabilize. Many of the players on the roster don’t have that kind of data to base it on slash stats. If we are talking about this one great career line and assume the player is healthy and not at the end of their career I would imagine he maximizes his playing time.
  4. I have appreciated Solano since watching him break out as a 31 year old with the Giants. He reminded me of Manny Mota then and it still fits. At 35 he should be a short side platoon player and a valuable bat on the bench. He is a batter I would want up in the late innings and runners in scoring position.
  5. It matters how you get to those 70s. Did you get there is 4 innings or is 5 or 6 innings? Did you get there by having a 27 and 35 pitch inning? I think if you look to that detail you might see that Gray is treated differently because he arrived at those pitch count numbers differently. This is on Gray. Throw strikes to the Detroit hitters in the bottom half of the line up instead of putting up inning pitch counts of 27 and 35 by walking four of them and you will stay in the game. Against a team like Detroit we need him pitching 7 innings instead coming out after 4 and questioning whether he should get a 5th inning. He can’t get to 7 without throwing strikes.
  6. Only one team has more innings from their starters this year than the Twins. If you throw an inning like his fourth yesterday after having large pitch count second inning you are going to have an early exit. Teams need to protect their pitching assets. This is on Gray. The Twins need him to be better. He needs to trust his defense and start attacking hitters particularly at the bottom of the order.
  7. Winder is the current long man. The problem with a long man like Winder is once they go long they aren’t available for a few days. I guess they could have sent him down and flipped him with Headrick. Headrick is the best option as the next starter ready right now. It is good to keep him stretched out as the “6th starter” in AAA. I wouldn’t be surprised if he fills the Twins TBA starter slot Saturday. That start could also be given to Winder.
  8. If there is a need at catcher the Twins should call up Wolters because he is more ready to help the team win with both the bat and the glove. The Twins are fortunate to have the veteran off the 40 and in AAA as the third catcher.
  9. Are there instances of the other starters with a mid game 30+ pitch inning where they went back out at around 80 pitches? I think Gray has a few of these recently. I suppose Gray’s three trips to the IL last year might also be a factor in the decision. Easy solution. Gray needs to be better.
  10. Kirilloff and Solano have pretty similar stat profiles in 2023. They both have good OBP but less SLG and ISO than you might expect from a corner player. Both have relatively low launch angles and exit velocities though Kirilloff’s are a couple of percent below Solano. Both have high BABIPs. Are they perceived as similarly?
  11. It seems wise to pull a pitcher after a 35 pitch fourth inning. It is a long season and starting pitching depth is thin with Mahle out on Maeda a question mark. Yo pitches even,y split after 4 innings isn’t as stressful as when the 4th of those innings is 35. The solution is an easy one. Gray needs to pitch better and he needs to be dominant against the teams with losing records. This is on Gray.
  12. The Giants game gets referenced frequently. Isn’t it the case that virtually all of the offense in that game came from those bench moves? I think the three were on base 6 of 8 plate appearances and accounted for the only run. Somehow that has been forgotten over time. Kepler also got on base when he pinch hit for Lewis. That would make it 7 for 9 in those two games. Is the argument that it is the process and results are irrelevant? Should Kirilloff start against left handed pitching? If he gives the Twins a better chance to win then yes. I would qualify that yes if the medical staff recommends giving him some time off for his wrist. In that case I would maximize the plate appearances against right handed pitching.
  13. This line up needs Julien’s bat and strike zone awareness. I wonder if first base is the spot. I think Kirilloff can play RF adequately. There will be openings on the corners in 2024 and hopefully sooner.
  14. I live out here and really hope the A’s stay. They also won a series against the Braves in May. They have a chance to win their third series in a row today. If they can follow that up with winning a fourth series against the Phillies no need to poke fun you can just poke. A seven game series will be more challenging but it is not easy to win 4 series in a row. Today they can make it three series in a row. Go A’s! The Twins also have not won four series in a row this year. The best they have done in two in a row. They have a chance with the Tigers and Red Sox coming up. Winning four series in a row is not trivial and certainly not a crapshoot.
  15. Why is it a problem? Is it unexpected that a young player will run into struggles? I would expect that Lewis will run into a similar tough stretch. Miranda will get an opportunity. Kirilloff may be needed in RF. In fact I think the OF is where he helps most in 2024. Lewis may be needed at 2B and probably helps most in CF next year. Both have injury histories. Depth and young talent is never a problem.
  16. I am not confident the Julien is a major league 2B. Is it possible he moves to 1B with Kirilloff in RF for 2024? They still have a lot of depth in Castro , Farmer and Gordon backed up by Martin and Lee. Miranda gives hope that Lewis is a possibility also. That is enough depth to let Polanco go as they did Rosario a few years back.
  17. What is the basis of the assumption? It only took a quick look to see that two of the relievers that Celestino had hits off are Santillan and Salazar. They are both younger and on the 40 man roster. They probably have the best stuff of the 6 pitchers. Santillan has solid major league numbers and on rehab. Salazar has been up with the big club this year. The starter Herget is 32 years old and has played in the minors since 2013. He gave up 7 runs including two home runs by Williams. Herget has also played for the Reds this year.
  18. I think I should have phrased it that I am not a buyer yet. If they put up the best record in the AL over the next 6 weeks I am ready to shift gears. I wrote that before Toronto. There are 44 games through July 30 and the schedule is not a difficult one. I would want to see 29 wins. They have 2 against Toronto so go 27-14 and I am a buyer. Meanwhile look for a buy low reliever or two and move on from a few veterans.
  19. Though I would not be a buyer I would consider trades where they buy low on struggling player hoping a change will turn things around. There are several relievers this year sitting with ERAs above 5 (some cases well above) that have recently been useful members of a bullpen. Some of them will return to effectiveness in the second half. The Twins need to find that reliever on a buy low. Maybe they find a trade partner hoping to find that in Pagán or maybe they trade a prospect that they would have risked losing to rule 5. They might consider a trade of a prospect for prospect. Seth suggested Jo Adell in January and stringer bell recently suggested someone like Larnach might be a fit. They need to identify that prospect that can best fit a need now and in the future.
  20. I am not a buyer this year. They have enough to win the central and a series against the 6th seed. I would try to win the central while surviving the growing pains of young players. I wouldn’t wait to find a trade partner for Kepler or Pagán. I don’t believe they have had a significant offer for either and I don’t believe that offer is coming. I would move on. The roster spot has more value than the C prospect they might hope to get. I would not trade any prospect other than those that will be up for rule 5 and unlikely to be added to the roster.
  21. Can he help in 2023? I think his AAA strike out to walk ratio screams he needs more time in AAA. There is upside and long term hope. However if they have a need for a catcher right now, Wolters is more ready to help.
  22. This discussion has me wondering who are the next two pitchers in line for the starting rotation. Ober and Varland provided great depth at 6 and 7. Who do they go to next? It seems reasonable to expect that they will need at least two more starters beyond the current 5. Gray and Ober have a recent history of injuries and could both go down. If that were to happen soon I don’t think the Twins have a good answer. I hope Maeda can make it back as a starter. They need him. Is Balazovic the next best option? Is there anyone else in AAA? Do they need to get De Leon stretched out in AAA? Should they get Enlow up to AAA as he might be the next best option? It is probably best for now to try to get Balazovic and Maeda ready for a starter work load.
  23. Is there any reasoning for this statement? Perez has a large contract that is beyond his likely value. Melendez could be their catcher of the future. They are unlikely to contend in the next few years. Wouldn’t it be a wise move to trade him to a team that will pay his full salary assuming they can get a good prospect? Is it possible Perez would be open to playing for a playoff team in these later stages of his career? I don’t think the Twins should take on that full salary and give up a prospect but it seems feasible that another team might make a run at him.
