Baseball player development is a non-linear path, with players facing different obstacles on their way to the big-league level. Organizations can be aggressive with some top prospects and move them through the farm system quicker than expected. Other prospects might suffer injuries or poor play and be forced to repeat a level for multiple years. Every prospect follows a different journey, making it intriguing for fans to follow. Below is a look at the top 10 prospects in the Twins organization according to Twins Daily’s end-of-the-season voting. Not every outlet updates its ranking multiple times per year, but Twins Daily updates the player rankings and scouting reports monthly so there is a live view of each prospect's progress. Multiple names below are on pace to impact the Twins roster next season. 1. Walker Jenkins, OF ETA: 2026 The Twins took Jenkins with the fifth overall pick in the 2023 draft. He was promoted relatively aggressively during his professional debut by ending the year at Low-A. In 26 games, he hit .362/.417/.571 (.989) with five doubles, four triples, and three home runs. It’s expected that he will start the year in Fort Myers with a chance to play in Cedar Rapids at the end of 2024. That should put him on pace to reach the big leagues in the second half of 2026, at which point he'll be 21 years old. 2. Brooks Lee, SS/3B ETA: 2024 The 2023 campaign was Lee’s first full season as a professional after the Twins took him with the eighth overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. He started the year at Double-A, posting an .841 OPS in 87 games. Minnesota promoted him to St. Paul in the season’s second half, and his OPS dipped to .731 at a level where he was over four years younger than the average age of the competition. Lee will start the year in St. Paul and be one injury away from making his big-league debut. 3. Emmanuel Rodriguez, OF ETA: 2025 Rodriguez will have an advantage over other names on this list due to being added to the 40-man roster this winter. These roster spots are valuable, and it gives him a better chance at making his debut because the team might need to dig into their depth if there are multiple big-league injuries. Rodriguez played the 2023 season at High-A, hitting .240/.400/.463 (.863) with 38 extra-base hits in 99 games. The Twins will plan for him to spend the 2024 campaign at Double-A, which puts him on pace to debut in 2025. 4. Marco Raya, SP ETA: 2025 The Twins have taken a unique development path with Raya by aggressively promoting him while limiting his innings pitched. He ended last season at Double-A in his age-20 season. Between two levels, Raya posted a 4.02 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP in 62 2/3 innings spread across 22 starts. He never pitched more than four innings in an appearance and never threw more than 54 pitches. It seems likely for Raya to spend all of 2024 at Double-A unless the team continues to be aggressive with him. 5. David Festa, SP ETA: 2024 Festa emerged as one of the organization’s top pitching prospects last season after being taken in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He pitched at Double-A and Triple-A with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. He posted an 11.6 K/9 in 92 1/3 innings across 24 appearances (22 starts). Minnesota faces a self-imposed payroll crunch next season, which may leave the team relying on internal options for added depth. Festa will be at Triple-A, waiting for his opportunity to join the Twins’ rotation at some point next season. 6. Charlee Soto, SP ETA: 2027 Soto has yet to make his professional debut after being drafted by the Twins with the 34th overall selection last June. He didn’t turn 18 until after the draft, so he has a lot of time to develop in the organization’s farm system. He will likely be the last player on this list to debut, but he has an exciting future with his pitching profile. 7. Austin Martin, 2B/OF ETA: 2024 Martin was the top-ranked prospect included in the Jose Berrios trade with Toronto, and he’s seen some ups and downs during his time with the Twins organization. He struggled during the 2022 season with a .683 OPS at Double-A before heading to the AFL and being one of the league’s best hitters. Last season, he injured his elbow during spring training, and there was some discussion that he’d need surgery. Martin rehabbed the elbow and posted a .791 OPS in 59 Triple-A games. The Twins have an opening in center field, and Martin might be able to take over that role at some point in 2024. 8. Brandon Winokur, OF ETA: 2027 Minnesota went well over-slot to sign Winokur for $1.5 million as a third-round pick. Winokur played 17 games during his professional debut and hit .288/.338/.546 (.884) with five doubles and four home runs. He has shown flashes of being a potential five-tool outfielder, but he is far from Target Field. Like Soto, he won’t debut for multiple seasons, and many things can go wrong with development along the way. 9. Luke Keaschall, 2B ETA: 2026 The Twins love to draft college bats, so the club targeted Keaschall with their second-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Minnesota was aggressive after signing him by having him play at three different levels and finishing the year with Cedar Rapids. In 31 games, he hit .288/.414/.478 (.892) with 14 extra-base hits. The Twins will likely have him return to High-A to begin 2024, which puts him on pace to debut during his age-23 season. 10. Tanner Schobel, 2B/3B ETA: 2025 Schobel was selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft, so his development path shows what the Twins might follow with Keaschall. He split time in 2023 between High- and Double-A while posting a .776 OPS in 126 games. TRANSACTIONS RHP Jorge Alcala assigned to Low-A Fort Myers on MLB Rehab. Saints Sentinel St. Paul 3, Louisville 4 Box Score Bailey Ober: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K HR: None Multi-hit games: Jair Camargo (2-for-4, RBI, K) The Saints blew up late, falling to the Bats after an excellent start by Bailey Ober. Ober was magnificent; the tall righty allowed just three measly singles, slicing through the Bats with his typical efficient style (he only needed 65 pitches). He also struck out three. You couldn’t draw up a more “Bailey Ober” start if you tried. St. Paul’s offense was occasionally patient, taking six walks on the day, but their issue was glaring, standing out like a neon light cutting through the night sky: 17 strikeouts. Three separate hitters whiffed at least three times, with Anthony Prato catching the worst of it; he punched out four times. They did score, though—three times in fact—as DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and Austin Martin both knocked in a run with 1st inning singles. Jair Camargo added another with an infield hit in the 3rd inning. Old friend Alan Busenitz (he’s back!) saved the game for Louisville, striking out one in a perfect inning. Both Jonathan India and Joey Votto played for the Bats; the rehabbing big-leaguers may be seen wearing Reds uniforms when the Twins soon come to town, but for now, the duo is based in Louisville. Votto singled. Reliever Levi Stoudt is Cincinnati's only top-30 prospect at AAA; he pitched a scoreless frame. Wind Surge Wisdom Wichita 3, Corpus Christi 7 Box Score Travis Adams: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K HR: None Multi-hit games: Tanner Schobel (2-for-4, RBI, K), Alex Isola (2-for-4, RBI) A dreadful 2nd inning cursed the Wind Surge to lose on Saturday. Travis Adams did recover to eventually finish the 5th inning, but the 2nd inning dragged him down, limiting the greatness of his pitching line. It’s a shame; the rest of his start was pretty good, with each other frame only once seeing a runner reach second base. The bats were productive, with all but two batters earning a hit. Few were damaging. Just two of the knocks went for extra-bases. Coordination proved to be the problem; Wichita never scored in an inning more than once, leaving their rallies short and unthreatening. Carlos Correa’s little brother, J.C. Correa, singled in three at-bats. Houston’s best prospect, however, is centerfielder Jacob Melton, and he walked and struck out twice. Kernels Nuggets Cedar Rapids 2, Wisconsin 3 Box Score John Klein: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K HR: None Multi-hit games: Misael Urbina (3-for-4, R, K) The Kernels lost a squeaker on Saturday. John Klein—the pride of Brooklyn Park—made his Kernels debut. The Iowa Central Community College product was excellent, whiffing four while only allowing two runs, giving up six hits in the process. He’s had quite the season, moving from the FCL to A+ ball, and he could see himself start to appear on prospect lists in the offseason. Cedar Rapids’ offense couldn’t support him, unfortunately, as a two-run Kala’i Rosario single represented the lone run-scoring hit of the night. The two RBIs pushed his season total to 94; he easily leads the Midwest League in RBIs; Jimmy Crooks is second with 73. The Kernels struck out 14 times, taking seven walks, while accruing six hits—all singles. Misael Urbina collected three singles and stole his sixth base of the season. Milwaukee’s 1st-round pick in 2023—Brock Wilken—struck out once in four at-bats. Mussel Matters Ft. Myers 4, Bradenton 5 Box Score Jose Olivares: 4 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 K HR: None Multi-hit games: None Despite a four-run 2nd inning, the Mighty Mussels fell to the Marauders on Saturday. Not even a rain delay could stop them; Fort Myers weathered a break in the middle of their rally, returning to plate four runs off a variety of Piranha-esque outcomes—singles, walks, and sacrifice flies. That was it, though, as the Mighty Mussels only had four total bases on the game. They did reach base often, taking an astounding 13 walks, but finding the critical knock proved elusive, and they scored no runs after their early outburst. They should have. The Marauders struck back with a four-run frame of their own, knotting the game in the middle innings. Though they sat dormant for a while as well, a 9th inning sacrifice fly broke the tie. Danny De Andrade’s lead-off double went nowhere. Alec Sayre’s groundout to the pitcher ended the game. Rehabbing big-leaguer, Jorge Alcala, struck out two in a perfect inning. He maxed out at 98.4 MPH. Second baseman Mitch Jebb is Pittsburgh’s 9th-ranked prospect, and he walked while driving in a pair off two sacrifice flies. SAINTS SENTINEL Columbus 14, St. Paul 6 (F/10) Box Score Patrick Murphy drew the start Sunday evening for the Saints. He worked 5 2/3 innings of two-run baseball. Murphy allowed four hits and four walks while striking out five. Bailey Ober was optioned to Triple-A having not pitched since August 27. Without making a start today for St. Paul, it appears the desire to limit his innings is in full swing. After the Clippers kicked off the scoring in the first inning, Kyle Garlick responded with a single. Anthony Prato was on second base after his double, and he raced around to score and tie the contest. Columbus again added in the second inning, and Alex Kirilloff tied it with his second home run in two days during the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, St. Paul grabbed their first lead. Catching the defense napping, Gilberto Celestino brought in Yunior Severino on a bunt to score the Saints third run. Looking to create some breathing room, the Saints found a few more tallies for the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Brooks Lee, who recently was featured in a great interview by Lou Hennessy, ripped his second triple for St. Paul. Garlick came around to score on the play and make it a 4-2 game. Trevor Larnach then lofted a sacrifice fly deep enough to bring Lee the final 90 feet. After getting the first two outs in the sixth inning, Murphy gave way to Alex Scherff in relief. The Saints reliever came on and got the final out of the frame, stranding a pair of runners on first and second. After a dropped pop up between the catcher and first baseman that resulted in Celestino being called out for interference, the St. Paul outfielder was tossed and Hernan Perez took over in left field. Looking to keep the lead intact, Austin Brice came on for Scherff with two outs in the top of the seventh and the bases loaded. Johnathan Rodriguez put a charge into one but Perez caught it up against the wall to save the lead. Columbus got a run back in the eighth inning when Jhonkensy Noel launched a solo shot off of Brice. The Clippers put runners on the corners with two outs, and Toby Gardenhire decided to make a change. Michael Boyle came in to replace Brice, and hung a slider to Guardians prospect Brayan Rocchio. He blasted the pitch for a three-run homer and the Saints lead was gone, now trailing 6-5. Down to their final out in the ninth inning, Lee stepped in and sent a baseball flying into the night. He launched his second Triple-A homer, and did it with his fourth hit of the night. Looking to make a playoff push, St. Paul had forced extras. Unfortunately Boyle struggled to get outs in the 10th inning and Andrew Bechtold gave up plenty as well. Columbus piled back on to the tune of a 14-6 advantage. The Saints couldn't get any momentum back going in their half of the 10th inning, and the big Columbus explosion was how things ended. Lee finished with a four-hit night while Kirilloff and Severino each had a pair of their own. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 4, San Antonio 3 Box Score Sunday was Travis Adams' turn to take the ball for Wichita. He worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. The Wind Surge starter also gave up three walks, but struck out five. San Antonio scored first with a pair of first inning runs. It was in the bottom of the second that Wichita provided their first answer. Will Holland doubled for the 10th time this season, and the base hit brought home both Patrick Winkel and Willie Joe Garry Jr. to tie the contest. After the Missions added a run with a third inning solo shot, the Wind Surge got the run back during the sixth inning. Aaron Sabato stepped in and blasted his 11th home run of the season. Needing just one run to walk it off, Michael Helman stepped in with runners on 1st and 2nd down to the final out. His single brought Holland across the plate, and the Wind Surge sent fans home happy. Despite recording nine hits on the day, it was a team effort for Wichita with only Tanner Schobel having a pair to his credit. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 12, Lake County 0 Box Score Seeking a victory to wrap up the weekend, Cedar Rapids turned to Christian MacLeod on Sunday. He worked five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk. MacLeod also struck out three. While it took a few innings for the Kernels to get going, they went to work in a big way late. During the fifth inning, Keoni Cavaco launched a three-run shot to score Andrew Cossetti and Jose Salas. A three-run frame in the sixth inning was had on a Salas single to score Jorel Ortega, and a Jeferson Morales double to bring home both Cossetti and Salas. In the seventh inning, the Kernels continued their run of threes. This time it was Carson McCusker bringing home Ortega on a double before Cossetti scored on a wild pitch. Then Morales grounded out, but not without McCusker coming home in the process. With no reason to stop adding, Cedar Rapids saw another opportunity for a fourth-straight three-run inning during the eighth. Emmanuel Rodriguez scored on a single by Cossetti, and Salas drove Ortega home on a single of his own. With the bases loaded and Morales batting, his two-out walk brought Cossetti across the plate. Cavaco ended the inning as the next batter, and the 12 runs across four late innings was an impressive bit of production for the Kernels. Lake County went down quietly during the ninth inning, and Cedar Rapids secured the victory. Salas went 4-for-4 Sunday, while Cossetti added two of his own. MUSSEL MATTERS Clearwater 3, Fort Myers 2 Box Score Ben Ethridge got the start Sunday morning for the Mighty Mussels. He turned in five innings of three-run ball. Ethridge gave up four hits and two walks while striking out five. Fort Myers scored first when Maddux Houghton stole home. Jay Harry stole second and Clearwater threw down on the play allowing the run to score. During the fifth inning, Clearwater plated three runs and took the lead. Walker Jenkins, who already tripled in the contest, singled home Dillon Tatum in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game. The comeback came up short with Fort Myers falling by one. With the loss, Fort Myers saw their eight-game winning streak snapped. Jenkins had two hits, which accounted for half of the Mighty Mussels production on the day. It was also his sixth straight multi-hit game, and he owns a .438/.455/.656 slash line in his first seven games for Fort Myers. TRANSACTIONS RHP Carlos Luna transferred from AA Wichita to AAA St. Paul RHP Cole Sands recalled by Twins LHP Brent Headrick optioned to AAA St. Paul Saints Sentinel St. Paul 8, Louisville 4 Box Score Patrick Murphy: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K HR: Hernán Pérez (5) Multi-hit games: Yunior Severino (2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI), Chris Williams (2-for-3, 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB) On the night they retired Darryl Strawberry’s jersey, the Saints bested the Bats, winning smoothly with a star-studded audience in the crowd. Strawberry was a Saint in 1996, where he slashed .435/.538/1.000—yes he slugged 1.000—over 29 games. He then won the World Series with the Yankees. It was a good year to be Darryl Strawberry. With Mike Veeck, Marv Goldklang, Van Schley, and, of course, Bill Murray on hand for the ceremony, the Saints felt a powerful, important presence looming over their game. And it fueled them. Patrick Murphy was excellent to start, working four frames with no earned runs while striking out five. After he blanked the Bats in the 4th, his Saints bats got rolling; Hernán Pérez smoked a three-run shot to right-center to start the scoring. The Bats struck for three of their own the following inning—very rude of them—but the Saints had an answer: if three runs weren’t enough, why not try four? Yunior Severino cracked a double and Chris Williams singled up the middle to plate three; the final run scored on a wild pitch. St. Paul scored one more time, but they didn’t need the run, and they were able to earn a victory to send Strawberry and the four men who brought baseball to St. Paul home with a win. Severino played first base for the second time since joining the Saints. Let the speculating commence. Noelvi Marte is the 24th-ranked prospect in MLB; he singled in two at-bats. Wind Surge Wisdom Wichita 13, NW Arkansas 3 Box Score Jaylen Nowlin: 5 1/3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K HR: None Multi-hit games: Yoyner Fajardo (2-for-6, 2 R, RBI), Tanner Schobel (2-for-6, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI), Patrick Winkel (2-for-6, 2B, R, 2 RBI), Seth Gray (2-for-4, 3 R, RBI, BB), Jake Rucker (3-for-4, 3B, R, 3 RBI) The Wind Surge obliterated their opponents on Saturday. It’s always a good sign when it takes me a few minutes to type out the multi-hit games. It was a true group event; every hitter reached base at least once—that’s every hitter that appeared in the game, all 10 of them—as the Wind Surge totaled seven walks on top of their 14 hits. Perhaps the most absurd stat from the game is that Wichita went 9-for-22 with runners in scoring position. 22! There were only two innings that didn’t see a baserunner. Not to be overshadowed, starter Jaylen Nowlin pitched very well, allowing a lone earned run over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. More importantly, perhaps, is that he only walked one batter. For a young hurler often at odds with his command, Saturday was a wonderful sight to see. Regi Grace dominated in relief as well; he tossed 3 2/3 shutout frames to bring the game to a quiet end. Yoyner Fajardo stole three bases to bring his season total to 39. NW Arkansas third baseman Cayden Wallace is Kansas City’s second-best prospect; he doubled in four at-bats. Kernels Nuggets Cedar Rapids 10, Quad Cities 12 (10 Innings) Box Score Cory Lewis: 4 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K HR: Carson McCusker (2) Multi-hit games: Noah Miller (2-for-6, 2 2B, R, 3 RBI), Kala’i Rosario (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, BB) The Kernels were walked-off on Saturday. No one could blame Cedar Rapids’ offense for losing them the game; outbursts in the fifth, eighth, and ninth helped plate 10 runs for the Kernels. Again, this was a shared success, with every starter either scoring a run or earning an RBI. Noah Miller was perhaps the most successful batter, as he doubled twice and knocked in three out of the lead-off spot. He’s slashing .244/.326/.463 since the start of August. Despite exiting from Friday’s game after a nasty collision with the outfield wall, Emmanuel Rodriguez played in Saturday’s match, singling and walking in six plate appearances. Pitching was hard to come by—for either side, really—as every Kernels pitcher not named Mike Paredes exited with more earned runs than they entered with. The game mercifully ended in the 10th, when—after Cedar Rapids failed to plate their Manfred Man—the River Bandits ended the game with a homer in the bottom half of the inning. Kansas City’s catcher Carter Jensen is their eighth-best prospect, and he knocked in two with a single and a sacrifice fly. Mussel Matters Ft. Myers 3, Bradenton 1 Box Score Miguelangel Boadas: 3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K HR: None Multi-hit games: Jay Harry (2-for-3, R) The Mighty Mussels smothered Bradenton’s bats on Saturday. Miguelangel Boadas may have started the game, but it was an all-around effort to limit offensive damage; Danny Moreno, Juan Mendez, and Ricardo Velez were all exceptional as well, carrying Fort Myers to the finish line with just one earned run. The most impressive outing? Perhaps Mendez, who struck out five over two scoreless frames. And the bats did what they needed to do to help win. They only acquired five hits—typically not enough to win—but they also worked six walks, giving themselves plenty of extra chances to knock in runners. They did. Scoring in each of the first three innings, Fort Myers struck a 3-0 lead that never wavered. Danny De Andrade earned a pair of RBIs, doubling in a run in the 1st while scoring another off a 3rd inning sacrifice fly. 2023 draft pick Jay Harry singled twice; his brother in recent draftee status, Luke Keaschall, walked once in four plate appearances. The bases proved to be eventful on Saturday, with Fort Myers stealing three bases while being caught twice and picked off once. If my Washington math is correct, they broke even on steals. Pittsburgh’s 11th-ranked prospect—an infielder named Mitch Jebb—struck out once in four trips to the plate. Complex Chronicles FCL Twins 2, FCL Red Sox 3 Box Score Carlos Gutierrez: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K HR: Harold Grant (4) Multi-hit games: None The FCL Twins fell to the FCL Red Sox in a low-scoring affair on Saturday. The New Bash Brothers—Brandon Winokur and Walker Jenkins—disappointed fans looking for fireworks with a tepid one hit over six combined at-bats. That one hit was immediately wiped out when catcher Diego Viloria picked off Jenkins. Certainly, the two will have better games in the future. No hitter could really put anything together, though; a Harold Grant two-run homer served as the team’s only run-scoring knock. Both Carlos Gutierrez and Matt Gabbert pitched well, with the two arms combining for 12 strikeouts and just one walk—a rarity for the lower levels of the minors. Joel Garcia had another fine start, following up his four-frame one-earned run outing on the fifth with five shutout innings and five strikeouts. He allowed a few more baserunners than you’d like, but he eluded damage well, always finding a way to strand men on base. The entirety of the DSL Twins’ offense came in the fourth; Javier Roman doubled in Moises Lopez, and Jesus Peraza—with the help of a Junior Del Valle sacrifice bunt—singled in Roman. Star international signing Hendry Chivilli continued his poor start to pro ball, punching out three times in four trips to the plate. TRANSACTIONS None Futures Game Buried somewhere deep beneath the streaming super highway, MLB’s yearly Futures Game played out, with the NL team handily beating the AL team 5-0. More important to us Twins fans: RHP David Festa pitched a scoreless inning with one hit and a strikeout of Milwaukee uber-prospect Jackson Chourio on three-straight sliders. He touched 97.6 MPH with his fastball. Saints Sentinel St. Paul 5, Iowa 2 Box Score Brent Headrick: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K HR: Anthony Prato (4), Chris Williams (16) Multi-hit games: None A breakout seventh inning led the Saints to victory on Saturday. It wasn’t working. No matter the start, and no matter the strategy, Simeon Woods Richardson couldn’t get anyone out. The top prospect entered the weekend with a 7.27 ERA on the year at AAA—and had peripherals unable to offer him any comfort. The Saints offered a solution: Brent Headrick would start the game—acquiring as many outs as he could—allowing Woods Richardson to enter facing a Cubs lineup tuned into a left-hander. It worked. Not only did Headrick crush his outing, Woods Richardson had one of his finest performances all year, punching out seven batters over five innings of work with a lone homer as his only blemish. This may be the blueprint needed for the talented youngster. The bats, while not overwhelming, were well-coordinated, leading to five runs off of six hits—more than enough to best the Cubs. Austin Martin plated the first run with a double into the right-center gap, marking St. Paul’s only score until the third act. Patience begat rewards, with an Anthony Prato moonshot finally breaking the stalemate. And fruit continued to bear, turning a 3-1 advantage into a 5-1 lead after Chris Williams cracked a homer out to the right-center power alley. The Cubs played feisty to end the game, scoring a second time to bring the game within three. With two runners on, Josh Winder snapped off a high curve—thought too high by the home plate ump. Williams, the catcher, disagreed. He quickly called for a challenge, and the robots agreed with his assessment, ending the game on a call overturned. Of course, one could opine about the minors having a better strike/ball system than MLB, but that’s better saved for later. The best Cubs prospect in Saturday’s game was Chase Strumpf. Ranked 23rd in the system by MLB.com, Strumpf struck out three times and committed an error. (Strumpf was the shortstop at JSerra High School which is why Royce Lewis played third base his first three years of varsity baseball.) Wind Surge Wisdom Wichita 4, Tulsa 3 Box Score Travis Adams: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K HR: Seth Gray (5), Aaron Sabato (5), Alerick Soularie (6) Multi-hit games: DaShawn Keirsey Jr. (3-for-5, 2B) The Wind Surge came back late to win on Saturday. Travis Adams was fine—maybe not great—over his five innings of work, allowing three runs against a surprisingly disappointing Drillers lineup. The 23-year-old started the season poorly, but now has back-to-back five inning starts with one and three runs allowed respectively. His bullpen had his back as well, as Regi Grace and Alex Scherff combined to toss four scoreless frames, carrying Wichita to the finish line as their bats came alive to win it. First it was Seth Gray—sudden and violent—blasting a ball over the centerfield wall to start the scoring, then Aaron Sabato shot one the other way to tie the game at two; Alerick Soularie’s skyscraper gave Wichita the lead for good. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. collected three hits and stole his 28th base of the season. The Drillers are led by Diego Cartaya, the Dodgers next big catcher in their efficient development system. He singled and walked in four trips to the plate. Kernels Nuggets Cedar Rapids 6, Quad Cities 8 Box Score Cory Lewis: 3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K HR: Tanner Schobel (14), Noah Miller (3) Multi-hit games: Ben Ross (3-for-4, 2B, 3 R), Noah Miller (2-for-4, HR, R, 4 RBI), Noah Cardenas (2-for-5) The Kernels scored four in the 1st, but couldn’t hold on in a thriller. It was an ambush. Tanner Schobel blasted a fastball 420 feet away into centerfield, surging ahead to first place on the Midwest League homer leaderboard. A few batters later, Noah Miller became the one jogging safely around the bases—and his homer plated three runners, leading to a commanding 4-0 advantage. Unfortunately, Cory Lewis wasn’t sharp. The typically tough righty mis-fired and battled, leading to an inflated pitch count as the River Bandits spit on obvious balls and waited out hittable strikes. He was out after three. Malik Barrington held down the fort for two frames, handing the game off to Alejandro Hidalgo. His Mr. Hyde appeared. A laborious sixth shifted favor towards the River Bandits; a two-run seventh ended the game for good. While Cedar Rapids scored twice after their initial outburst, their bats couldn’t break through to save their lost lead, and the Kernels ended up falling with a bases-loaded groundout in the 9th. Gavin Cross—Kansas City’s best prospect—singled once and plated two runs. Mussel Matters Wet playing conditions ended this game before it began, and the Mussels will play a double-header on Sunday. Complex Chronicles The FCL Twins did not play on Saturday. Dominican Dailies DSL Twins 10, DSL Rockies 11 (10 Innings) Box Score Miguel Cordero: 3 1/3 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K HR: Carlos Silva (1) Multi-hit games: Dameury Pena (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI), Moises Lopez (3-for-4, 2B, 3B, R, 4 RBI), Carlos Silva (2-for-4, HR, 2B, R, 2 RBI) The DSL Twins lost a classic, sloppy DSL game on Saturday. These things happen when your starting pitcher is 16-years-old (born in 2006; hope that doesn’t ruin your Sunday). Miguel Cordero peppered the plate, making judicial use of his allotted targets to fire off four walks and five runs allowed. In his defense, his defense failed him for a few of those runs. Also in his defense, he’s two years away from being legally allowed to vote. The DSL Twins offense was prolific, plating 10 runs off of eight hits and seven walks, leaving just five men on base. Dameury Pena, Moises Lopez, and Carlos Silva (not that one) were your stars: the trio combined for seven knocks—with four going for extra-bases. Lopez served as a complex hero, though, as he drove in four runs and gave a few back with a pair of errors. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 3, Iowa 5 Box Score Kyle Garlick gave the Saints a 3-1 lead in the third inning when he hit a long, three-run homer, but that was it, and it wasn't enough to hold off the Cubs. Blayne Enlow started and gave up four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. He was hurt by the long ball. Matt Mervis hit a solo homer in the first inning, and Nelson Velazquez his his 12th home run, a three-run shot that put the Cubs back on top for good. Josh Winder came on and gave up one run on four hits over 1 2/3 innings. He struck out three batters and, more important, walked none. Kody Funderburk got the final four outs, two on strikeouts. Andrew Stevenson led off the game with a single. Garlick's home run in the third inning was the team's second hit of the game. They then went hitless over the final six innings of the game. Two hits. However, they did take eight walks and hit by two pitches which presented them with some opportunities. Garlick went 1-for-2 with his ninth homer and two walks. Catcher Tony Wolters also had two walks in the game. The Iowa Cubs roster includes several of the Top 20 Cubs prospects at North Side Baseball: SP Jordan Wicks ranks as the Cubs #5 prospect. The team's first-round pick in 2021 from Kansas State made his second Triple-A start in this game. 1B Matt Mervis ranks as the Cubs #6 prospect. The slugger made his MLB debut earlier this season and has been up and down a couple of times, as recently as three weeks ago. Not bad for a guy drafted in the 39th round out of high school, who went to Duke and did not get drafted in 2020. And, just for fun: WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 8, Tulsa 2 Box Score Tied 2-2 through five innings, Wichita's offense surged with three runs in both the sixth and the seventh innings to take a commanding lead. The Wind Surge had just five hits in the game, but they showed patience and took 13(!) walks. Eight of the ninth batters in the lineup had at least one walk. A Patrick Winkel single drove in DaShawn Keirsey, Jr with the team's first run. Alerick Soularie hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning, his fifth homer of the year. Then came the sixth inning. The inning started with two walks. After a foul pop out, a third walk loaded the bases. After a pitching change, Soularie walked to put the team back on top 3-2. Will Holland followed with a single that scored Winkel and Seth Gray. In the seventh inning, Alex Isola led off with a solo homer, his 10th longball of the season. It was followed by a walk, a fielder's choice with an error, and another walk to load the bases. Winkel scored on a wild pitch, and Holland drove in another run with another single. Holland went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI to lead the way. Soularie walked twice to go with his home run. Isola and Winkel were each 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Seth Gray reached three times with walks. Chad Donato was activated and tossed four shutout innings. He gave up two hits, walked none and struck out six batters. Jordan Brink came in and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk. He recorded just one out before being replaced by Hunter McMahon who stranded two runners. He went 2 2/3 perfect innings and struck out four of the eight batters he faced to earn the win. Denny Bentley then struck out three batters over the final two scoreless innings. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 9, Quad Cities 6 Box Score This was quite the back and forth affair. Through three innings, the teams were tied at 1-1. Both teams had four-run fourth innings. Quad Cities went ahead 6-5 in the top of the sixth, but the bullpen shut them down over the final three innings. The Kernels took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning, and then had single runs in the seventh and eighth frames. Tanner Schobel was named the Midwest League's Player of the Month for June earlier in the day on Thursday. He responded by going 3-for-3 with two walks, and his 13th home run of the season was a two-run shot that gave the team their 7-6 season in the bottom of the sixth. (since the Kernels don't post game video on Twitter, let's just take a fun look back at his first home run at Virginia Tech which includes a great home run celebration. Noah Miller went 2-for-5 with his third triple. Misael Urbina went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. He also stole his fifth base. Kyle Jones started for the Kernels. He gave up five runs on five hits over four innings. Two of the hits were home runs. He walked one and struck out four batters. Matthew Swain came in and gave up one run on two hits and a walk over two innings. He had two strikeouts. Niklas Rimmel walked one over two scoreless innings. A.J. Labas gave up a hit and two walks in the ninth inning, but he didn't give up a run and recorded his second save since joining the Kernels about a week ago. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 1, Jupiter 4 Box Score The Mighty Mussels took the 1-0 lead in the second inning when Dylan Neuse singled in Rubel Cespedes. Unfortunately, that was the lone run for the team in the game and they dropped to .500 on the season for the first time in a long time, at 39-39. Jarret Whorff signed with the Twins in May out of the independent leagues and immediately assigned to the Mussels. He made his first start in this game and gave up one run on one hit over four innings. He walked four and struck out five batters. Fellow southpaw Zach Veen came in and gave up one run on one hit, a solo homer, over his two innings. He walked one and struck out two batters. Johnathan Lavallee gave up two runs on five hits over 1 1/3 innings. Develson Aria came in with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and got the final two outs, one via the strikeout. The Mussels had plenty of baserunners. They had seven hits and eight walks. Unfortunately, the team went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base. Cespedes led the way. He went 2-for-3 with two walks. Neuse had an RBI single and two walks. COMPLEX CHRONICLES FCL Twins 7, FCL Orioles 3 Box Score Matt Gabbert was on the mound for the Twins and he worked four innings while allowing three runs on five hits. Gabbert did give up five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Down two after the top half, the Twins answered with a run in the bottom half. Byron Chourio doubled to score Isaac Peña and make it a 2-1 game. After giving up another run to the Orioles, Omari Daniel singled in Giovanny Rivero before Chourio drove Duncan Hewitt home with a single of his own. Leaving the fourth inning, things were knotted at three. Giovanny Rivero singled home Yasser Mercedes to kick off the seventh in and Daniel brought Andres Centeno across the plate. Now up 7-3, the Twins had this plenty in hand. Chourio grabbed three hits on the day with Daniel adding a pair of his own. DOMINICAN DAILY DSL Rockies 19, DSL Twins 8 Box Score Luis Rincon only last four outs today and the Dominican Summer League Twins dealt with a blowout. Despite scoring four runs, punctuated with a Ewing Matos triple, they were run off from that point forward. The Rockies tied things up in the second inning before adding two in the fourth inning. They scored another pair in the seventh inning while adding seven in the eight inning and another four in the ninth. The Twins were staring at a mess. Dameury Peña and Matos both recorded three hits during the game. Unfortunately, they couldn’t add more with their twelve hits and it wound up being the 16th loss on the season. I’ve been following the Twins minor leagues and done these types of monthly reports for more than 15 years. I honestly can’t remember a month when there were this many strong candidates for the monthly hitter award. Many months, an OPS of .900 would make you a strong candidate to win the award. This month, there were seven players with an OPS over 1.000 that were considered. Six more had an OPS over .900. What a great month for hitters in the Twins minor leagues! Unfortunately, it was one of the worst hitting months for the big league hitters. THE TOP FIVE HITTERS Number 5 - Cedar Rapids Kernels - IF Tanner Schobel - 30-93, .323/.400/.613 (1.013), 2 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 11 BB, 16 K. Last July, the Twins made Tanner Schobel their second round draft pick out of Virginia Tech. In his junior season, he played in 59 games and hit .362/.445/.689 (1.134) with 18 doubles, 19 homers, and 74 RBI as the team’s shortstop. In his minor-league career, he has split his time between second base and third base. This year, he’s playing a little over 60% of his innings at the hot corner. Schobel has primarily batted out of the leadoff spot for the Kernels and has been able to provide early power for his offense. He had eight multi-hit games including three, three-hit games and one four-hit game. He ended the month on a nine-game hitting streak and had a stretch where he had five home runs in five games. For the season, the 22-year-old is now hitting .285/.362/.469 (.832) with seven doubles, four triples, and 11 home runs. He also has been successful on nine of ten stolen base attempts. Number 4 - St. Paul Saints - OF Matt Wallner - 31-97, .320/.432/.588 (1.020), 9 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 13 BB, 28 K. I’m not sure if Twins fans are aware of this, but Matt Wallner has been pretty good at hitting baseballs in June. He ended May with a handful of games in the big leagues. He went 7-for-11, including 6-for-6 with two walks and a homer in his final two games. However, he was optioned to St. Paul. Did he mope? Nope! Instead, he continued to mash. He hit for average, took his walks, struck out less than he has in the past, and still provided power near the top of the lineup. He returned to the Saints and had a double, triple and home run in his first game. He had eight hits over his first three games back. The Forest Lake native had 11 multi-hit games including three-hit games in the final two games of June. Ultimately, it’s just a matter of time before Wallner again finds himself in the Target Field outfield. Number 3 - Wichita Wind Surge - OF DaShawn Keirsey, Jr - 31-87, .356/.414/.609 (1.023), 3 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, 9 BB, 15 K. Keirsey is one of the more athletic and toolsy players in the Twins organization. He is the fastest player in the system. Along with the above stats, the former fourth-round draft pick from the University of Utah, went 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts last month. He can hit for average. He showed in June his power potential. He can hit at the top of the order and play an elite level of defense in center field. The key for Keirsey is being on the field. He stayed healthy in 2022, and he has remained healthy this season. In 66 games, he has hit .317/.368/.490 (.858) with 12 doubles, three triples, and nine home runs. He also has been successful on 26 of 30 steal attempts. He’s more than ready to move up to St. Paul. Number 2 - St. Paul Saints - OF Andrew Stevenson - 36-91, .396/.466/.659 (1.125), 6 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs, 10 BB, 16 K. The Twins signed Stevenson to a minor-league contract in early March. He had spent his entire professional career with the Washington Nationals. They selected him in the second round in 2015. He made his big-league debut two years later. In total, he hit .248 over 248 games with the Nationals between 2017 and 2021. He spent the full 2022 season at Triple-A Rochester. The Twins decided that they needed a left-handed hitting outfielder to play in St. Paul and added him. Stevenson has become the team’s primary leadoff hitter and did it all in June. He hits for average, takes his walks, and has extra base power. In 65 games this year, he is hitting .321/.396/.502 (.898) with 14 doubles, five triples, and seven home runs. If you’ve been paying attention to the Twins Minor League Reports here at Twins Daily in July, this choice for Hitter of the Month will come as no surprise to you. Many will point you to his three-homer game on June 13th in Louisville. However, by that time, he had hits in all nine games that he played during the month. He already had two homers, and he already had two, four-RBI games. But that Tuesday night game in Louisville was special. He hit three homers and drove in seven runs. The Saints played an afternoon game the next day, and he hit two more homers and drove in four runs. On Thursday, he added one more homer. He didn’t need doubles and triples in June. he just hit the ball well beyond the fencing in the outfield and got to jog around the bases. The 26-year-old former eighth-round pick out of Clemson led the Twins minor leagues in Home Runs, RBI, On-Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, OPS. He was also third in batting average and walks. Overall, in 52 games, he has hit .286/.401/.600 (1.001) with eight doubles, a triples, and 15 home runs. He had mostly played at first base, but he has started six games behind the plate, and he’s done some DHing too. If the Twins have a need for a first baseman or DH, or even a second (or third) catcher, Williams has put himself into serious consideration for a call up. He’s earned it. Nine hits in 20 at-bats over the last seven days including two home runs. He scored six runs but struck out five times (with zero walks). 🔥: Randy Dobnak was great in his lone start. He pitched five innings and allowed only a hit and a walk resulting in an impressive 0.67 WHIP. He struck out six. A return to the Randy of old would be a huge boost. 🔥: Jair Camargo drove in a team-leading 10 runs for the Saints and tied Wallner for a team-high with nine hits (including four doubles). The Twins might just have a legitimate catching prospect on their hands. He also hit a walk-off grand slam and the pictures (included) were awesome! 🔥: Blayne Enlow threw five innings in his start and allowed no hits (!), but walked five (!). He struck out three. 🔥: Dallas Keuchel allowed three hits and four walks, but struck out three and allowed three hits in 4 1/3 innings. 🥶: Jose Miranda earned that promotion by posting a team-low .696 OPS over the last week. 🤨 🥶: Louie Varland pitched 4 2/3 innings and issued five walks and allowed six hits (including two home runs) and six earned runs. What's Next: The Saints will pay a visit to the Iowa Cubs beginning on Tuesday. Double-A: Wichita Wind Surge Overall: 32-41 (4-1 last week) Overview: The Wind Surge saw a four-game winning streak end on Sunday and will finish their series on Monday evening. 🔥: Aaron Sabato hit two home runs among his six hits. He had a 1.170 OPS though he needs to cut down on the strikeouts (seven in 19 at-bats). 🔥: Travis Adams threw five two-hit, one-run innings while striking out seven. 🔥: Yunior Severino hit three home runs. (He also needs to cut down on his strikeouts - nine in 20 at-bats.) 🔥: Brooks Lee led the team with seven RBI. 🥶: Regi Grace allowed two home runs in his 4 2/3 innings. He did strike out six but also allowed five hits, a walk, and four runs. 🥶: Both Will Holland and Seth Gray got only two hits in their ten or more at-bats. What's Next: Wichita heads to Tulsa before the All-Star Break. High-A: Cedar Rapids Kernels Overall: 5-3 in the second half. (3-2 last week) Overview: The Kernels got a late start to their week, getting three days off before a doubleheader on Thursday. They'll finish their Peoria series on Monday night. 🔥: Tanner Schobel has done everything he can to deserve a promotion. In the last seven days, he led the team with eight hits, two home runs, eight RBI, and four runs. 🔥: Kyle Jones struck out five in 5 1/3 shutout innings. He allowed two hits and two walks. 🔥: C.J. Culpepper only struck out two in six innings. But he allowed no runs on three hits and a walk. 🥶: Marco Raya looked human - allowing four hits and two walks - in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four... and got promoted. 🥶: Emmanuel Rodriguez is quite something. He'll do some unbelievable things... both good and bad. This week, it was bad. He went 0-for-14 while striking out nine times. But he did draw eight walks... which resulted in a .364 OBP. 🥶: Noah Miller (4-19), Kala'i Rosario (1-17), Jose Salas (3-15), and Misael Urbina (1-11) all would deserve their own line, but collectively... woof. What's Next: Cedar Rapids will host Quad Cities beginning on Tuesday. Low-A: Ft. Myers Mighty Mussels Overall: 3-5 in the second half. (2-3 last week) Overview: After taking the first two from Lakeland, Fort Myers has lost three straight and finish the series Monday night. 🔥: Dylan Neuse went 5-11 and scored seven runs. He drew nine walks (which is the same amount as the second- and third-place walkers on the team combined). His on-base percentage was a freakish .727. 🔥: Ben Ethridge picked up the torch for all the recently-promoted starters by throwing five shutout innings. He struck out five and allowed only one hit and two walks. 🥶: Rubel Cespedes finished the week 2-for-22 with five strikeouts. 🥶: Miguelangel Boadas allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in two innings.
