Joey G. - it’s Sunday afternoon v. the Royals & IMO, after 3-4 negative comments in this forum by me, you just bought yourself the rest of the first half of the season w/o me asking for your release!!! 107 Mph double off the wall Solo bomb 431ft 3 run bomb …….all in 3 consecutive AB’s……3 runs scored with 4 RBI. There’s some realized potential if I’ve ever seen it………raw power. WELL DONE!!!!

So I agree with most - certainly with the Pagan analysis! Solano is cheap, which makes cutting ties a bit easier but his experience will keep prospects at bay, I agree. Not sure though, if Kiriloff & Polanco come back by May 1 ………& if Larnach is still hitting well (not OK but well) they gotta send him down or DFA Solano……unless someone else is hurt. Maeda - his leash may be short “as a starter” but I don’t see him going anywhere other than the Pen. Mahle - if medium v. long leash, where does he go? I guess he could go to long relief & Ober could take his spot. Can’t imagine him getting DFA’d. Taylor is stable as long as he’s healthy. Need the depth.

What are the 6 biggest HRs in Twins history?
JD-TWINS commented on Devlin Clark's blog entry in Devlin Clark
Great topic - no argument on any of these because other than Puckett’s, they are all subjective. The problem I have is that it says, since the inception of the Twins in 1961, but then reads like somebody that started watching the Twins in 1981. Obviously, there are a number of dramatic home runs over 60 years of baseball but 2 in 2002 & 2 in 1987 seem to be linked to personal fandom at that time. Maybe should read “my 6 favorite Twin’s homers”? Maybe that’s assumed? Keep on writing!- 32 comments

I’d like to say we probably aren’t going to realize Balazovic’s value as a starter, definitely not in ‘23 and with Paddack & Ober & Varland & SWR & maybe Prielipp all in front of him, doubtful in ‘24. We should start considering him as another 7th-8th inning guy that can dominate 3-4 batters per outing……. another Jax/Alacala type.

Apparently Durán wasn’t available due to sleeping wrong - stiff neck or something? ANYWAY, agree it is good to see López throwing free and easy - every pitch different than the last through 2 outings. Encouraging!!

VIDEO: Buxton Runs Twins to Victory
JD-TWINS replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope Julien starts seeing some starts soon at 1B over in St. Paul!! Can’t watch much more than another handful of games with Gallo facing RH pitching and looking embarrassed. Buxton at DH is all the risk I need to seem him play with - reckless abandon on bases - hoped for 60-70 games at DH, maybe we should bump to 100 games there? With Taylor facing RH pitching & with Gallo - Kepler in the lineup, seems like a big chunk of probable zero effectiveness. Need to see a lefty soon…….need Polanco back to free up Gordon for OF……..Kiriloff at 80% shines next to Gallo.- 2 replies

Vasquez 4-7 so far (30% of our hits) - it’ll be a couple hour plus flight to Miami tonight and back to Hot weather……Jeffers plays there. Farmer to 2B (to displace Taylor) and Gordon to CF. Doubt this will happen because I doubt they want to jerk Gordon around unless needed. With another RH pitcher on mound, we’ll have to live with Kepler & Gallo again today. Gotta give them another shot against KC #3 arm……Marlin’s guys will be another level of challenge. Alcantara on Wednesday!

How Do National Outlets View the 2023 Twins?
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My hope is (understand your point) that Kiriloff can relieve us of the need for Gallo to start. If Kiriloff hits a woeful .240, (with a .310 OBP) it’s an upside v. Gallo at 1B! Seen it for two days and he doesn’t appear to have any confidence nor a clue in the batter’s box………….walk, fly out to the track, hit a sharp grounder to 1B, …..please show us something Joey!- 11 replies

Polanco will stay at 2B - Farmer to 3B & Miranda to 1B v. LH pitching. Kiriloff at 1B v. RH pitching with Gordon in the OF (position depending upon if Kepler or Gallo gets released)……not enough room on the roster for Kiriloff - Polanco - Larnach - Gallo - Kepler - Solano…………would they DFA Solano to have Kepler & Gallo on the bench by middle of May?
-
AGREED. ……..Pagan may be a more favorable response. At least Pagan has a couple of upbeat metrics………..the ball being put in play by Gallo 25% of his AB’s is hard to imagine. Hard to stomach but a positive risk move by the FO. He’s brought flexible defensive depth, in one body on the roster, and has the ability to hit an HR once a week……Having the ability and getting it done are 2 different things! Support the team - don’t need to love it, agreed! My worry is Alex & Jorge come back & they option Larnach. Might start screaming then…….only other option is Solano…….who gets most leash….Gallo - Solano - Kepler?
-
Taylor v. RH pitching - Kepler - Gallo….it’s as ugly as we thought it might be. Gordon in CF v. RH pitching - Gallo/Kepler rotating in RF since neither should play in front of Larnach - Kiriloff at 1B - Polanco at 2B and our line-up is Waaay better. Hopefully, by the 20th of the month - fingers crossed! Can we DFA a $9M or better yet, an $11M salary in May?
-
I hope we’re both wrong! ….after 2 games now though….,,,,he looks like a 10th grade kid playing on the Varsity and he’s way over matched. Pathetic. When a guy only puts the ball in play 25% of the time, I guess we gotta wait 8-10 games to see if he can get 4 hits in that time period. Right now he looks like he might get A HIT per week…..maybe?? Maybe 2 walks in a week because he doesn’t swing! We gotta get Kiriloff back or be prepared to bring up Julien to play 1B by April 15! Will need Polanco as well so we can get Gordon freed up to get Taylor out of CF v. RH pitching …….he doesn’t look much better than Gallo. Both are more than competent on defense but we need some more juice on offense!! Two & 0 and haven’t yielded a run…….some good situational pitching & we’re playing the hapless Royals. Need more “O” in a hurry.

A 2023 Twins Perspective Right from the Dugout
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure would like to see Kepler move over .250 BA - I get that’s obvious. If he is struggling in May & Gordon/Larnach are hitting I see him sitting & Larnach playing right 80% of the time until the Trade Deadline. Larnach can hit 15 Hr’s from July - September playing RF daily.- 9 replies

Do the Twins Have Too Many Starters?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Winder, needs to get healthy - Sands - (Balazovic too?) - Henriquez, needs to get healthy………..I think all 4 of these guys should shift to Pen roles. Balazovic could maybe be a Durán for us in 8th inning regularly?- 26 replies

St. Paul Saints Opening Day Roster

Success from the Pen often has little to do with the Manager strategy and comes down to pitchers executing pitches. Sure, there’s a scouting report and opposing batters have tendencies to try and take advantage of but you gotta execute with command on the mound!! See P. López getting out of jambs yesterday v. Pagan creating jambs last year.

Able to read, hence fan of sports for over 50 years, and certainly curious about injuries. Not really at all concerned with the communication about injuries from the front office. To each his own but am tired about “the lack of transparency” comments from the FO. If a guy’s hurt and he’s going to need some time to heal, within a range, to get better - enough said……it’s not an exact science. Maybe we are as fans surprised by some extended time to heal but how does that have any affect on anything? Carl Anthony Towns was out from November to late March……..he had a January set-back. He was “close” to being ready many times……no real good reports from Wolves other than, he isn’t ready! I gotta think Fantasy owners want to know who & how long to sit guys & gamblers are wondering about their picks to get to the playoffs - win totals - etc. IMO, try to be accurate as a FO with injury news while protecting any sensitive/competitive issues. Update guy’s injuries every couple weeks - maybe the 1st & 15th of month so management & fans are clear about the information timing. Sound reasonable?

The interesting thing I learned today was that the new Trainer stated that Lewis could be playing in games by mid-April. Wow! Great recovery and great news. He won’t play in games for a couple months but it sounds like he’s a lock for being available by mid-June. That’s really encouraging for added potential depth - early enough in the year so that it may make a difference. Q: (too early to worry about it) Who would Lewis displace on the 26 man if Polanco & Kiriloff are back?

Regarding the win total probably being lower this year due to the Twins not being able to play as many games v. AL Central lower level teams………doesn’t it wash with us getting to play the lower level teams from the 3 National League Divisions? …….from a mutual familiarity standpoint, I think we have a better shot beating the Reds over 6 games than we would v. Tigers for 6 additional games.

Are Long Starts Coming for the Twins?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the thing to keep in mind is that even when there is no intent to have an early hook, pitchers will get pulled for lack of performance. Stated above, Mahle came out 5 of his 19 starts in ‘22 before the 5th. Lopez came out of the game 7 times before the 5th. Both about 25% of starts. If a guy goes 6 1/3 for 3 straight starts & then 4 innings in his 4th start, his average innings are 5.75. League average last year was around 5.4 innings per start…………not easy to get average innings anywhere near back to where they used to be.- 41 replies

Just hope nobody gets hurt playing in Minnesota next weekend……forecast in low 40’s. Tough to come from Miami into that!! Hope we are decisive enough to keep Larnach on roster & DFA Solano when Kiriloff & Polanco come back to Twin Cities. Doubt they will in the short-term since Larnach has ability to get sent down. Roster is somewhat overflowing with good players/pitchers. That’s how it appears to me. Don’t understand the lack of confidence in our offense from others here? FO has put together a team with ability & depth.

My Favorite breakout players for the Twins
JD-TWINS commented on troyjuhn's blog entry in Depressed Twins Blog
Martin’s UCL, elbow injury is still up in the air relative to recovery time. He’s behind now for this year and needs time to grow offensively in the minors - hope he excels there!! Breakout guys, Alcala - Larnach ……comeback players, Kepler - Gallo
