  1. I dunno, Since anything can happen in a short series, I kinda look at it where if you can make the playoffs you're a contender (even if you're not one of the favorites). I respect the process behind the Mahle trade and the aggression in trying to get us over the top. I'm more forgiving of trades/signings that have that kind of process behind them. Hajjar was interesting, but has real control issues that might limit him to the bullpen (and hasn't pitched yet in 2023, which is worrisome). CES was the key player for me, and while his best position is "hitter" his bat might be special. But you gotta give to get and Mahle looked like a valuable player. It's disappointing that injury has made him someone you can't rely on now. Has he not been forthcoming this season? The elbow problem seems new, but I haven't heard anything about it being an issue for a while. Not sure Steer would have changed much in the calculus on Miranda, except that maybe we don't sign Castro? Does someone like Steer push Miranda back down to AAA or is it a "slightly higher floor, much lower ceiling" comp that doesn't make much difference? Farmer's ability to come back quickly and hit at AAA has impressed me. that was a BAD hit and right now it doesn't seem to be in his head at all. I think if he's ready to come back I let Miranda go down and get his head and swing right.
  2. I could see that as an option for next season? But MAT has been hitting well enough that combined with his defense in CF that it seems unlikely that he'll get pushed out soon. I tend to agree that Brooks Lee sure looks like the eventual starter at 3B
  3. It's a fair question. I was thinking Farmer replaces Miranda right now...would putting Julien in for Slano generate enough playing time to matter? Are we ready to lose Solano (who would become a free agent, i presume)? I don't think we need to make the decision on Julien yet; he's still barely played at AAA in the biggest scheme of things, but the hit tool sure does seem to be there. And when the offense in MLB is struggling like it is, it's tempting to think of what he could offer.
  4. Steer ain't so bad defensively? LOL. (Ok, he's probably the best of the 4. Barely. Just above Miranda.) It's definitely part of why Steer & CES were available to be traded, along with Lewis, Martin, and Lee coming in the next wave.
  5. Julien is having no trouble with AAA pitching. At what point does he bully his way back to the MLB roster? If Solano continues to struggle at the plate in May and Julien keeps destroying AAA pitching, at what point do you move on from Solano (who seems to no longer have much utility outside of 1B, where he hasn't been good either)? Or is it going to be a thing where he doesn't get his next shot until another injury befalls us?
  6. I really didn't think Royce was actually that close. It'll be interesting to see if they try to keep him in AAA for a while to be sure he's ready or if he bulls his way back on to the roster by hitting everything in sight. Hope he's really recovered and ready (not that i think the Twins would take any chances on pushing him early), I really like him.
  7. Trading CES was a risk and it's not paying off with Mahle unreliable because of injury. His bat has the potential to be impressive and he was the piece I was most concerned about losing. But I do think if people are up in arms at Miranda's defense at 3B then CES would have really made people crazy. He's pretty dreadful defensively, which is probably why he's only played 2 games at 3B for Cincy this season. I don't think he's going to stick there. I think I would send Miranda down at this point. He's slumping badly and needs a reset. Farmer can slot in at 3B and I think other posters are right that it's preferable to have Castro sitting on the bench with Solano than Miranda. Castro kind of is who he is: utility guy who isn't going to hit much but will provide competent defense at a lot of different spots. A couple of weeks in AAA might get Miranda back to showing better plate discipline and attacking pitches in the zone with authority. A couple of weeks in AAA probably doesn't change anything for Castro, and his positional flexibility gives him utility in the late innings as a defensive replacement or pinch runner.
  8. It probably wouldn't have mattered, but he did a poor job hustling out of the box on that double play ball. He's fast enough that he could have beaten that throw and it would have scored a run. But it was a team effort in poor hitting. Ump certainly had a wide zone; when Bremer is repeatedly commenting on it, you know it must be kinda bad; unfortunately we didn't have the CF angle to really see it on the broadcast. I've always wondered: does it help a guy like Quantrill more who isn't a big K pitcher to get extra strikes consistently 3-4 inches off the plate than a pitcher who is a strike out guy?
  9. I would rather have Arraez playing 3B than Miranda right now, absolutely. I think I would also rather have Lopez starting for us for the next several years, though. I believe in Miranda's talent, but he looks like he needs a re-set. I think if Farmer hadn't gotten beaned he might have already been sent down to get his approach in order and his mind right, but the Twins don't trust Castro/Gordon/Solano to hold down 3B. Which I get. And Royce Lewis is still another 6-8 weeks away from being a realistic option. (Royce would probably say he'll be ready in 3 weeks, lol)
  10. at least not every game. But some people seem to be hate-watching this team and prefer it when they fail, I think.
  11. That's just not true about Correa. His best months of the season last year were (in order) June, Sept/Oct, and May. It's not being an apologist to be accurate. (BTW, the first 10 games in September were against Chicago, Cleveland, and New York all teams in contention and not throwing out minor leaguers to pitch and the Twins were tied for 1st on Sept 4th, so they weren't "well out of it" either and Correa was hitting then too: 14-40 with 4hrs during that stretch.) Correa has started the season slow at the plate (and did last season as well)...but he didn't just pad his stats at the end of last season. It's simply not true, and I cannot for the life of me understand why a Twins fan would embrace this lie about one of our best players.
  12. Urshela has been pretty bad this season. Also, we didn't give him away for nothing: you might notice the Twins Daily story on the player we acquired for him is doing pretty well in the minors. Miranda hit roughly as well as Urshela last season and there really wasn't room for both on the roster. Miranda is younger and cheaper with more upside. Urshela can't play SS or 2B any longer (and considering how much he's been playing 1B for the Angels, maybe there's questions about how much he can do at 3B going forward) and we needed to add a guy who could backup SS...which we got in Farmer. If Farmer doesn't get beaned by Giolito, I think we probably see him playing some 3B and giving Miranda a break to hopefully find his swing again. But a freak accident that has ended player's careers took him out of the team for a while . Thankfully, he's rehabbing well and looks close to rejoining the team, which seem miraculous. But let's not let the Myth of Urshela make us crazy. I liked him last season and he played well for us. But with Correa back there really wasn't a fit for him and he wasn't worth the arbitration number to fill the Donovan Solano role. Considering how he's hit this season, seems like the right decision.
  13. agreed. If he can settle on a breaking ball that works for him he'll be in pretty good shape. He still seems to be searching for the right one between the curve, slider, and sweeper and hasn't figured out which it is. Maybe the sweeper is it?
  14. True, but you can also expose a guy like that too because at age 20 is he going to be able to stick on a MLB roster for a full season, even as a reliever? Few teams are going to be able to hold the 26-man roster spot on a lottery ticket. He's definitely showing some signs, but unless he can get that walk rate under control he's going to definitely hit some bumps. He's not unhittable so it's a few too many baserunners right now. But he's doing well for a 20 year old at high A.
  15. Enlow's outing was very impressive. It's great to see him healthy and pitching well. I think it's going to turn out well that he passed through this off-season and stuck in the organization, and I think there's an excellent chance that he's back on the 40-man next year. He's always had talent, now it looks like he's finally healthy again. Hope to see this continue and for him to finish the year at AAA. I'm very curious to see how Alex Isola ends up this season. He doesn't seem to be catching very much and while his hit tool isn't bad, I'm not sure it's enough to make it as a 1B/DH.
  16. From this comment you would think the Twins are in last place in the division rather than first! Scoring runs by HR is a great way to put a lot of runs up on the board. Worked for Earl Weaver, he's only in the hall of fame. It's a long season. Twins (and this is an organizational decision, not just Rocco, it's everyone, including the players) are trying to keep everyone healthy and fresh for the full season, and one of the ways you do that is using your entire roster. Burn everyone up by the end of May and the team will collapse in September. Gallo has an OPS+ of 143. He's played excellent defense at multiple positions. Calling this one of the worst signings in Twins history is absurd. Batting average is not the only stat that matters. Correa has started out slow at the plate (his defense has been quality, though) but evaluating his signing and contract based on 30 games is kinda crazy.
  17. I like Max Kepler just fine, but he is who he is at this point: a quality defender and around league average on offense. It's not particularly exciting for a corner OF, and there's not much upside left. At the same time the floor is pretty solid. I might have moved on from him in the offseason if the deal was decent, but I get keeping him considering all the injuries we've had. The Rosario stuff is pretty much nonsense: he wasn't worth another raise, and proved it after leaving. He wasn't starter-quality in 2021, and Atlanta overreacted to a great series by giving him a terrible contract that they've immediately regretted. Neither Larnach nor Kirilloff have performed as hoped over the past 2+ seasons and they've still added more value than Rosario over that period. Kepler isn't Rosario: even when he's struggling at the plate, he's adding value, but at a certain point there's going to be a question on whether or not he's producing enough at the plate to justify the roster spot and the contract, especially with other hitters in the minors pushing for a chance.
  18. So did the graphics department get fired in the Bally's bankruptcy?
  19. Sonny Gray's control has been dreadful this inning. He's been great all year, but right now he's melting down into a real shocker. It happens. But he's been nowhere near the strike zone.
  20. well, he's currently playing 1B poorly for the angels and not hitting much better than Miranda? and our backup/defensive replacement got beaned in the face.
  21. Brooks Lee continues to look like an outstanding draft pick. He just hits. Real possibility he could be looking at a midseason promotion to AAA, which would be pretty fantastic. Looking forward to seeing what Raya can do when he's a little more stretched out. The rubber meets the road on him when he's able to go 6 innings, I think. Really like his talent, but 3 inning stints don't tell us much.
  22. Ober was excellent. I really wondered whether how deep he could go into a game and he did a really nice job on a night with very little offense. I was not terribly impressed with the Apple TV+ broadcast. The play-by-play guy was so unmemorable I can't even recall his name (Gary something?) and Dontrelle Willis was unimpressive. (He reminded me a little of Hawkins; pretty good when he talks about some of the specifics of pitching and terrible when he tries to go for laughs and go bigger than the game) Needed the big bomb from Kepler, hope there's more offense to take the pressure off the pitching tonight (especially the bullpen) but it's pretty wonderful to have starting pitching like this. It's been a while since we've had anything close to this kind of quality and depth, and it feels like they can keep us in any game. Up the Twins!
  23. Any win is a good win. bummer that they had to go 12 (a bit odd in the "Manfred Man" Era); hopefully we can a) get a good long start from Ober tonight and b) maybe be in a position where someone like Winder can just clean up the rest of the game. The ChiSox have some issues, but they're a better team than their current record. I was nervous about this series coming in because their pitching was better than the early results, and at some point it felt like they would get on track. Of course, if we had squeaked out Game 1 it's a series win and most of us are happy. (some people seem bound and determined not to be happy this Twins season? I'm absolutely blown away when I see someone declaring the twins will finish 10 games behind Cleveland after a loss)
  24. I blame Rocco. A better manager would have given his players unbreakable bats in that inning. I mean, it's just unbelievable that he didn't use his force of will to get the ball into the outfield there. I'm sure Tony LaRussa would have scored a run there.
  25. Definitely this. Thought they missed the one at 3B earlier, but that one was closer.
