Great article. I agree with your thoughts. But this isn't unusual for the Twins. Wait until late to sign a free agent after the good ones are gone. Then low ball offers like Correa and tell people how hard they tried and what a great offer they made. Probably just public relations ploy. What bothers me most is letting other free agents sign elsewhere and the Twins left holding the bag again. It further tells me that if they signed Correa there would not have been much flexible payroll dollars left. Otherwise they should have signed some players while awaiting his decision. I'm glad we didn't sign him! We would have been a mediocre team with no payroll to pursue other players. No we will just be our normal mediocre team without busting the bank.

Carlos Correa was with the Twins at the start of the season and played all year with the Twins. With that in mind, the Twins finished with their lowest non pandemic years attendance in Target Field history. Yes that was with the great Correa here. It could be argued that if he wasn't here the attendance wouldn't even been as high as it was. But he played in front of a lot of crowds less than 18,000. The Twins the past two years in particular have been awful. They play boring, mistake laden, baseball. They are often listless and, like their manager, have an I don't care attitude. There's perhaps several reasons people don't go to games. I guess that's for another topic. But playing sound fundamental baseball with players that have not been found in baseballs bargain basement, would be a step in the right direction.

Great article Nick. I think most of us new from the moment that Correa signed his Twins contract that he would opt out. We also new there was no way he was coming back. Also from that moment the Twins, fans, media, etc were being played by Correa and his agent Scott Boras. The fact that our FO played into it while trying to placate fans and make it appear they were making a serious attempt to sign his is borderline disgraceful. What is most bothersome to me is that several affordable pitchers were signed by other teams during this process. Since this current FO regimen has been in Minnesota it's been very difficult to figure out what they are doing as each year seems to be thrown together in such a haphazard way. I would expect more of them.

Gut Punch! Carlos Correa Signs with the Giants
Whitey333 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with an earlier poster who said he saw this coming some 300 some days ago. We all did. No not the 13 year deal but knowing from day one that Correa was only here for the one year. Make no mistake about it. We were all used by Correa and his camp from day one. This was never about the Twins, it was about Correa using the team, and fans for his own benefit. It worked perfectly for him. He played the system well. Now the Twins can hopefully work on bettering the overall team. Back to normal. The Twins did sign two washed up pitchers to minor league contracts this week. Yes, back to normal. -
Byron Buxton Did the Twins a Favor
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You say Buxton did twins a favor by signing a 100 million contract. I think he did a great job for himself. Not bad 15 mill per year for a part time player. He has done well for himself. I believe, at least as of this writing, he is the highest paid Twin. Not bad for a guy that hardly ever plays. In eight seasons he had a full season just once. In 2017 he played in 140 games. The other seven years he's played in total less than half. Again he should consider himself fortunate. I believe he only played 92 of 162 games last year. I'd love to see him play a full season but it's not likely to happen. We see glimpses of excellence then stretches where he plays very poorly. Before we deem this a team friendly deal, let's see him play full time for a few seasons and produce. -
What’s Happening With Pablo Lopez
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins need pitching and catching. Everyone mentions Winder, Ober, Richardson, etal like they are shoo ins. The have not proven much of anything yet IMO. With all the negative stats and projected future results, why would anyone want Arraez? I like him. You don't trade a batting champion without getting something good and someone who can help immediately. IMO the Twins FO has not the greatest track record on trades. Be careful. They are all intent on signing Correa. But why? They will not have a very good team around him. Makes no sense to spend that kind of money, albeit a superstar, on one player with so many holes to fill.- 15 replies

The Latest on the Minnesota Twins and Carlos Rodon
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like always the Twins wait until the last minute to do little or nothing. I'm guessing Twins do not sign Rodon. They do not sign Correa. They do not sign Vazquez. They will start searching the dumpsters again for upgrades. We should not sign Correa especially for all that money and years and if it has ANY opt out clauses tell him NO. We need a commitment. If FO goes to all of that and somehow signs Correa with multiple opt outs the FO should be fired.- 18 replies

Has Luis Arraez Peaked?
Whitey333 replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting article. Perhaps since you have all the answers, you should be the GM. But this current FO is failing. Even before the team folded in September with all the injuries, the play very boring and undisciplined baseball. The team has no identity and no plan. If they do posses a plan they are keeping it to themselves and not generating much excitement so far. They left the winter meetings having acquired no one of significance. This is not really unexpected since they've done it for years. In the end the Twins may sign some cheap retreads and then try to tell the fans they tried hard. Same old same old. I'm not talking about Correa. Spending that much money on one player with so many holes in the team is simply foolhearty. While other teams take names off the board the twins as usual sit and moan about how much money the free agents are getting. Let's move on from Correa, add some relief pitching, a starter or two, a catcher etc. The central is there for the taking. -
People keep saying sign Correa to entice fans to ballpark. Where were they last year? He was with the team all of last year but yet they had their lowest, non covid years, attendance in Target Field history. Maybe without him attendance would have been much lower, who knows? Winning brings fans more than anything. Signing Correa and doing nothing else except relying on oft injured and many unproven over hyped players is a recipe for disaster.

I am totally against signing Correa. What a waste of money. And if they have to give him multiple opt outs, I show him the door immediately. If you are going to commit a 9 figure offer the least the player can do is show a commitment to stay. Opt outs only help the player and definitely prove he's only concerned about himself. What kind of teammate is that?

Nice, very informative article. I don't know about which I would choose but I hope for once this FO chooses a pitcher, that can have a positive impact sooner than later.

Rumor: Ken Rosenthal update on Carlos Correa
Whitey333 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I agree. This fascination with Correa is excessive. Now with Boegaarts signing with Padres it's Dan'bury, Correa, and whatever. I will probably be one of the very few that will be disappointed if we do sign Correa. Spending that much for one player on an otherwise mediocre and boring team seems senseless when you have so many holes and question marks on the team. -
Reevaluating the Catcher Trade Market
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have very little confidence in the FO. Remember they themselves said the process is more important than the results. That was mainly about Pagan but obviously seems to be the Twins philosophy. Don't disrupt the "plan" even if it isn't working.- 23 replies

The Respectability Gap- Was 2022 a Stepping Stone?
Whitey333 commented on Hans Birkeland's blog entry in Hansblog
Wow. You must be working at least part time for the Twins public relations department. Your article has more holes in it than the twins team. The past two years have been amongst the worst ever in Twins baseball IMO. They play boring, listless baseball. I've been following the Twins since the mid 1960s. IMO. They are closer to bottoming out than being a major contender. Too much wishing, hoping and iffing in your opinions with little to back it up. That's the team in a nutshell. A lot of hype and hope without the substance. What good will it do to sign Correa to a mega contract if there isn't more monies available to fill some of those wholes. You will have a great shortstop making a lot of money leading depleted team to mediocrity. -
Yes there MUST be some kind of deadline. Make your best offer with a deadline attached. If that's not acceptable to him, so be it. Let him go. He's used us for his own interests long enough anyway. This fascination with Correa is interesting. If he signs here, there will be the instant euphoria. Then when it's realized there is limited payroll dollars left for other areas people will get upset that souch payroll money is tied up to one person. There had better be a more far reaching development with this roster including Correa. Just signing him and adding not much else would seem foolish IMO.

Where Should the Minnesota Twins Payroll Be in 2023?
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To stop thinking of money and concentrating on pitching, fielding, hitting and managing is a weird statement to make. Those positions cost money. If you go with the cheap players all the time you get what you pay for:. Cheap performance and terrible results. The past two years have been very poor and very boring. I believe we need to invest the payroll and distribute it out better. Another weird statement? That Buxton is a superstar. A superstar puts up superstar stats and plays. Part time players are not superstars!! Buxton got a great deal for himself. Getting 15 mill per year to play to play about 50% of your teams games for 7 of the 8 years, is a very friendly deal. A Buxton friendly deal. Good for him.- 26 replies

The Twins Have a Corner Outfield Conundrum
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is a conundrum to some degree. The list of outfielders mentioned is sure to cause fear amongst their opponents lol. Many of them are fortunate to be on a 40 man roster. IMO most of those on the list, not all, can easily be dropped. They simply have not proven they are major league ball players. If the oft injured can't return to the field and play 130 or more games the team is going to be in a world of hurt in 2023.- 33 replies

What Defines Success for Byron Buxton in 2023?
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Same old crap for 8 years now. Every off season it's what ifs for Byron. And every year, minus one, he seldom plays. You keep saying he plays at a MVP level. Yes granted he hit 28 Homer's but his average hovered around .200 most of the year with a very high strikeout rate. How you you claim him to be a superstar when he plays so few games? You say he got " only" 100 million. I'm glad you are so affluent as to consider 100 million in the " only" category. My opinion is he has been a bust with occasional glimpses of greatness. I would argue the 100 million us not team friendly but very player friendly. Not bad earnings for a very part time player. I would say Buck and his agent are much better at fleecing a team out of $100 million. I would love to see him play 140 games again, most in center field. Will we ever know how good he could be? We will never know. -
Andrew Heaney is the Best the Twins Can Do
Whitey333 replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well let's see here. Twins Kim over top notch pitching, wait until the last moment, then sign an oft injured and unproven pitchers and HOPE he does well. Then Twins will say they tried, and tried to find a decent FA pitcher but they were all taken. Sound familiar? Why should this year be any different?- 34 replies

Someone on here said that if the Twins won the world series in the first four years of a potential Correa signing that it would be worth it. Does anyone really think this team l, currently constructed, has any chance of winning a world series? IMO it's going to take a lot more than Correa to win a world series. When there is so much money tied up into one player it's nearly impossible to be able to afford upgrades needed in other areas. Let's move on from this Correa nonsense and redistribute those payroll dollars into other areas.

Let's Worry About the Lineup This Winter
Whitey333 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins need pitching. They aren't deep enough at all. Our current staff has injury issues, performance issues and experience issues. I also think the Twins need to make Correa their best and FINAL offer. If he rejects it, then move on. It hampers team plans if we have to wait up to a couple of months for his decision as has been rumored. Besides that 30 some mil could sure be used to make improvements in other areas.- 27 replies

Analyze This: Jose Abreu Is the Bat Minnesota Needs
Whitey333 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes I agree. Abreu would be fine but at what cost? I don't see it happening. IMO we still need pitching. The White Sox have far better starting pitching than the Twins and they just added Clevinger. Good or bad I don't know. But Sox value starting pitching. I think the Twins should too. And for the analytical geeks:. Congratulations! You have done your part in aiding to the downfall of MLB. You Tell us Pagan is analytically a very good pitcher when statistically he's been one of the worst relief pitchers in baseball over the past three years. When you support a player like Correa by saying how many RBIs he had you go right around and say how RBIs aren't important. I for one find it repugnant that this new analytical wave has taken over. The grand old game was grand until the new generation of analytic lovers come in and change the whole foundation of the game as if they know better than the people who oversaw the game for decades. Today's game is very slow, boring, and has lost its personality. -
Can the Twins Count On Starter’s Health?
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Im sure the Twins will do more dumpster diving to find pitching. They always do and it had worked so well lol. The current starting staff is full of maybes and hopefulness. Nothing on sound ground. If the twins philosophy will continue to be to let starters only go 5 innings, they better invest heavily on bullpen arms.- 21 replies

Nice article. Well thought out. Part of the reason some people clamor to sign an ace or at least a very good SP is that the Twins don't have one now or in their system. They have failed to produce top quality pitching from within. Yes we can all name the possible starting pitchers the twins already have lined up that are currently on the roster. Just because people can throw those names out there doesn't mean that those are quality pitchers. Way too much unproven talent. Plus this FO has continually gone bargain basement shopping for pitchers. It hasn't done too well has it? If we are hell bent to spend so much money on Correa it will leave us little or no monies to improve in other areas. That is pitching especially. Unless Carlos can pitch lol
