Royals want high-end prospect, or salary relief in Chapman trade before deadline

Chapman has been good this year for the Royals, but by no means would I give up a "high-end prospect" for him. Right now, I'd be looking for a better bat to add to the outfield. 

I'd give up Miranda in a heartbeat since he has no defensive position and give up a high AA/AAA Pitching arm.  Pretty sure not enough but poke the bear.  Austin Martin? Woods-Richardson?  Are they fits here?

Barlow doesn’t give the Royals salary relief. The prospect cost goes up when he is added to a Chapman deal. Perez does give salary relief. I don’t see how they fit the money he is owed through 2026 into their budget. 

I am not a buyer this year. I am not trading any prospect with the upside of Miranda’s bat for a reliever. Instead I would look to buy low on relievers. I would see what Maeda can give the Twins from the pen. I would look to some of the arms in St. Paul before trading anything more than C prospects.

Unless he's gonna come here and teach 4 or 5 players how to hit consistently and not strike out, what difference does it make?

This thread has kind of expanded into something more like "Who will the Royals trade, and when, and for how much?" And I think that's close enough to the original intent. They are nowhere near contending this year or probably for 3 years. They have at least 4-6 players who are old enough not to be needed by a rebuilding team but also performing well enough to be on the roster of a contender. The players know this, the fans know this, and of course all the GM's know this. If I'm the Royals GM I'd be saying, "We're open for business. Let the bidding begin!"

I think he'd be a good contrast to Thielbar as a lefty setup guy.

I highly doubt this FO thinks of it self as sellers after the last two years and they trades they made, and players they signed. Being just sellers would be them admitting failure and I don't see that happening. I could see them selling a bit and buying a bit. But after they last two years and no playoff wins, selling this year might be the kiss of death for them.

How about Christian Vasquez and a 4-10 ranked prospect (and throw in a lottery pick prospect) for SALVADOR PEREZ.   Unfortunately, he is a fan fave in KC.  He appears on Car Dealership commercials.    Their fan base would react negatively. 
I don’t think the Twins should bid for Chapman ;although it will be entertaining to see some of the same people here who opposed going after Trevor Bauer support trading for Aroldus Chapman..  
By the way, Bauer’s stats in Japan are NOT good, but he’s coming back from long layoff and injury. 

A good reason why it’s good to go after free agents, even when the team may not have high aspirations.  You can continue to add to your prospect pool instead of just sitting in stasis waiting to catch lightning in a bottle on a current prospect.

• Perez has a large contract that is beyond his likely value.
• Melendez could be their catcher of the future.
• They are unlikely to contend in the next few years.

Wouldn’t it be a wise move to trade him to a team that will pay his full salary assuming they can get a good prospect? Is it possible Perez would be open to playing for a playoff team in these later stages of his career?

I don’t think the Twins should take on that full salary and give up a prospect but it seems feasible that another team might make a run at him.

It's no accident that Perez is the most popular and most respected player on the Royals. He's a really good catcher and by all appearances he's a strong and capable team leader. This is also why he has the highest trade value on the team in spite of his contract. Almost every team would be upgraded significantly by adding him to the roster. It's an opportunity for the Royals to improve their organization, but it would be imperative that they get a worthwhile return. And they'll also need to do a good job of handling the PR with their fans. I think the likelihood of him being traded is well over 50%.

As many others were saying, it would be more worth the sacrifice to trade a high-end prospect for a good bat than to add to a surplus.
