Earlier in the season, yes, all about winning series’s. But with 50 games to go, and this many teams in it, that is a minimum must. Now, it will be about which team(s) can go on a meaningful winning streak. The rest of the series winners only will be watching on TV with the rest of us.

Considering that most teams are very close to .500, any team that wins most of their series will be in the playoffs. Always remember that the baseball season is a slog. The Twins get walked off today and tomorrow there is a game. There is a ton of baseball yet to be played. The history of the game includes many teams left for done only to finish strong.

My take away ..... today's game was a really good baseball game. Gilbert and Prielipp both throw nasty stuff.

And I still like our chances tomorrow with Bradley going.  Win that game and we tie the season series with a team still chasing us in the standings.  We are still fine.

Well that might be easy for you or me to type but then nobody on TD could even catch the ground ball to begin with ... in their prime.

Not defending him, but fans can be smarter than players, and often are. But fans should never be compared to the physical play of MLB players. Any player in any level of Professional ball should be able to easily scoop that grounder on that play. And they should all know what to do with the ball. Compared to his peers, that was an inexcusable boneheaded play, and Lewis is surely man enough to to own it and agree.

We will see. I disagree.. I submit it will take more than that at this point in the season. Teams with win streaks will of course be winning series, but it will take more than 2-1 series wins now. I’ll take a picture of the standings and visit this at season’s end.

Hey we stole 2 games from K.C.   Seattle stole this one - it happens ,    its the mental breakdowns that im worried about,

I’d actually say the Twins almost stole this one.  It’s too bad Caratini didn’t challenge ball 4. Munoz is tough—must be hard to see that clearly as a batter.  If he was catching I bet he challenges that pitch.

For sure he would’ve if he was catching (ignoring the part about… Why would a catcher challenge a strike call 😉 ). We can all agree that catchers have the best vantage point and that it’s tougher for hitters, but Caratini just has to be more aware of the situation. The leverage in that situation is just so massive. If it’s ANYWHERE close you have to challenge, ESPECIALLY when you have both challenges left. It could’ve been a 3 inches into the zone and I still would’ve said “good challenge”

You think teams will play at a .666 winning percentage in the last 50 games (33-17 or 34-16)? Maybe somebody does. We shall see.

Currently, only the Brewers and Dodgers are winning at a pace above .591.

As for the Royce play… yeah, he messed up. And I yelled at my TV when it happened. But stuff happens so fast. I’m sure there was a plan, but even that plan probably leaves a lot of ambiguity.

“Royce, if there’s a sharp grounder, here’s what you need to do.”

Well… ok… how sharp? Now the play happens and in a split second you’re asking yourself “was that sharp enough? Did Naylor break right away? Is the guy going to second in my way”

He should’ve made a better choice, but it’s crazy to not understand why plays like that get screwed up. They do. All the time.

Onward. Let’s win the series tomorrow.

I'm just not piling on Lewis there. Smart? I never understood what smart was. Anyone born after 1990 should be worth tens or hundreds of millions if they were smart, right? or if you knew the right people and choose your parents carefully you must be smart. As far as admitting or owning up to the play, there is a game tomorrow. Baseball, more than most sports cannot dwell on what happened in the past. They try to learn from their experiences and move on. The inability to accept failure is the biggest reason that some outstanding athletes cannot play baseball. It is an extremely humbling sport. It takes enormous confidence, humility, and smarts to succeed at baseball.

No. I didn’t say that. You are. Boston just did and is. Detroit did last year. Minnesota did in 2006 I think it was. Cleveland always seems to lately. Because teams won’t win every series, as you pointed out, and might even get swept in one, the mass of teams at around .500 that go on a run in the last two months will be in. Plodding with mostly 2-1 series wins will be at home come playoffs. Pace? Pace, like momentum, is imaginary, can change back and forth at any moment, and only a tired retrospective observation.

Wow. Good luck on figuring out what smart is. Tic toc.
You can be right. I don’t mind.
Cheers.

Provus totally guessing. I can guess, too. Probably right. Maybe more to the reason for Matthews. We will see.

No....he relayed the rationale directly from what Shelton stated...

There's only a couple of choices on how to look at this.  You can accept that he is learning a new position on the fly and will make tough mistakes.  I advocated for his move to first in the offseason so we wouldn't be going through this learning curve in August.  Had they committed to this, Bell likely doesn't get signed and we save money which could have put into the bullepen at the beginning of the season.  Shelton stayed the course to see how the players would react before making wholesale changes.  Lewis is a professional and knows he messed up and will learn.

The other option is to fire him into the sun, or the baseball equivalent, DFA him and move on.  I guess you could send him to St. Paul.  That option almost automatically leads to a combo of Bell, Caratini, and Jackson playing 1B.  Clemens is not a permanent option there as they need his flexibility to plug holes elsewhere in the lineup.  Idk if it's true, but I would bet that Lewis is still a better defensive option than the combination of Bell, Caratini, and Jackson at 1B.

Did anyone say DFA him? Wow. Nice straw man.

That's the mother of all strawmen.  Of course we're not major leaguers.  Not a prerequisite.

Runner up was the article whose title insisted that none of us are GMs.  Well duh.

/ edit - ha, I didn't read the thread all the way through, to see that Mike pointed out a different straw man argument.

Learn what?

Learn that when the batter walks up to the plate, you ask yourself, "how many outs? how fast are the runners and the batter? what do I do if the ball is hit to me?"

Royce didn't have a clue.  He stepped on first.  Then he stopped to think.  Too late.

Magic number to clinch the WC is 51!!

51? It's an area everyone talks about but few are familiar with.
