Assume the Twins are in a position to buy a week from now. Who are the three targets you want to see on the Twins come August 4th? This can be however you want to view the trade deadline: modest pick-ups, a reasonable push, an unreasonable emptying of the farm - however YOU view the deadline.

Starting pitcher: Brady Singer - if the Reds are willing to move Hunter Greene I'm more than willing to negotiate for him over Singer.

Relief Pitchers: AJ Minter (NYM) and Adrian Morejon (SD) - our left handed relief pitchers provide zero comfort when they enter a game. Wandy Peralta also works if he's a more realistic option over Morejon.

Who do I want them to go get, or who do I think is realistic to get?

Top 3 wish they could get(not sure on the cost or if actually will be traded) 1.Skubel 2. Mason Miller 3. Hader.  I doubt Twins would want to pony up money or prospects for either, but it would give solid rotation for a short series, and 2 high end pen guys that pitch both sides.  That would move Gomez and Morris to the 6th and 7th innings guys. Not even sure if any of them are for sale from their teams as Tigers is pushing up the standings, Padres has 3 years of control for Miller and always looking to add, not sell.  Astros are right by Twins in standings so they may not be selling either.

Two relievers and a fourth starter. All with multiple years of control. But you can only obtain them by trading some of the following: Martin, Bell, Mendez, Gonzalez, Rosario and Jeffers or any other non high end prospect.

(1) 3/4 starter  - Emerson Hancock or Jose Soriano. Would love Detmers but the prospect cost will be too high. New starter moves Matthews to the BP; kills 2 birds with 1 stone. 

(2) Late inning reliever - Sam Bachman, Jose Ferrer or Antonio Senzatela. Fantasy trade is to get Hancock and Ferrer from Seattle for Jeffers and either Emma, GG or Mendez. 

(3) Bat to use against LH pitching - Luis Arraez or Lane Johnson.

Hey that's more than 3 guys but only 3 spots.

1) Isaac Paredes, middle of the order type bat.

2) Kevin Gausman, Freddy Peralta, Robbie Ray or another starting pitcher to help with innings. I'd also be ok with a starter who is team controlled longer, but I don't know how much I trust to plan for that without knowing what the next cba will look like.

3) A true late inning reliever

 

With that, I also want both Jenkins and Culpepper up, because even if their bats aren't ready, the defense will improve with them up.

I'm ok with Larnach going to get a new reliever. I don't know that I want Jeffers to go, as I think him being on the team the last 2 months is more valuable than the return will be. If it can be a BIG return for him, then I'd be open to that too.

I will frame this as buyers to compete in 2027 and 2028.

Sell Ryan, Jeffers, Larnach.  Target near ready prospects and include other "expendable" pieces if needed.

Buy Hunter Goodman and a SP with 2 years of control, such as Jose Soriano.

These moves would reduce 2027 payroll enough that if the Twins went back up to 130-140M, they can sign a decent SP for an AAV around 20M and a position player to fill a gap caused by trades.

I would not spend big on relievers.  They have got some guys that can be part of a competent bullpen.  They are a Top 5 bullpen in July and with the trades I propose, they would have plenty of 40 man spots to try a few more minor leaguers like Culpepper and Hidalgo.  Could try to get a controllable RP in the deals for Ryan, Jeffers, Larnach, but would focus on near ready SPs.  If they could pull of getting 2 guns like Taj and Abel, that'd be great.

What makes you believe they will spend anything to help a team that obviously has no chance in the playoffs?

3.  Luis Arraez   there are not many right handed bats available.

 

Weaver would have the priority to add another decent arm to the BP.  He is a rental and 32 so the cost wouldn't be huge.

Detmers has two years of team control available.   If the Twins are serious about competing now and in the near term this is a guy they should acquire even if the prospect costs are high.  I would offer Riley Quick and Eduardo Tait for him.  "That is giving away talent", but it ignores the talent coming in with significant team control.   Tait as a prospect has been replaced by Lackey from the draft, and perhaps Tilley in the catching pipeline.  And you are trading Quick, the unknown value for a known value.

I don't think Arraez has a lot of prospect value.  I would consider Brandon WInokur if they paid a ton of his remaining deal.

That's an overpay for Detmers. Get a medium prospect added, and it's likely fair. I'd not do this, but if I'm forced to be a buyer, then I'd do this. 

If you are forced to be a buyer, Arraez makes sense, and that level prospect seems about right. Move Clemens to first, deal Lewis for a RP, again, if I'm forced to be a buyer. 

I'd likely propose something similar if I'm forced to be a buyer.

You are probably right, but I think it isn't too far off the mark.  I looked Detmers over, and it isn't as if he is a world beater.  Maybe have the trade be Tait, who is somewhat surplus value at this moment, and one of our next level pitching prospects like Reiter or one of the HS guys (Soto, Hill, Wachsman) who are very long term prospects.  Add another mid level prospect if needed to get over the top.

I would deal Royce just to move him to another environment.  Maybe send him to a California team where he grew up, like to the Angels for a prospect like their 28th ranked (MLB.com) Luke LaCourse.
