Ultimately it goes back to value and where the team is regards to contention.  Joe Ryan has two years left and his value is really really high. I don't believe the team is really in contention so I cash in Ryan and get some serious talent back. In the case of Larnach who has two years left. He could improve that value and his return wouldn't be as high so I hang on to him.

So you would predetermine whether the team can contend and essentially how the players would perform. The only two Twins World Series came after very poor seasons. In hindsight we can claim how the 1987 Twins were going to be able to fix a disastrous bullpen with a late offseason trade for a reliever coming off his worst season and signing some old relievers in free agency. We can claim that two starters would be enough to get to the playoffs. We can see the extraordinary health of our position players. Others may have predetermined to trade Viola at his peak with his two years of control left.

This discussion replacing Outman or Gray on the 40 man roster is a much different discussion than a paternity leave fill in.

I believe String was asking about who is that temporary fill in but only String can confirm that.

Correct, I was asking who the temporary replacement might be. With the versatility of Kreidler, either an infielder or outfielder could be promoted.

Per Bobby Nightengale, the answer is Gonzalez. Congratulations to him, even if the promotion is for just a day or two.

Tonight would be the night to start him against a left handed pitcher. Outman has been starting for Buxton. Maybe Buxton is ready for CF with Gonzalez on a corner or DH and Outman sitting.

Yes... I don't necessarily believe that trading Joe Ryan takes you out of contention.

As much as I complain about predetermination. Predetermination is what front offices are paid to do. It can't be avoided. They have to use predetermination to staff the roster there is really no other way to do it. Once they staff the roster... that's when I'd like the predetermination to take a back seat.

Predetermination on a competitiveness. That has multiple things to consider. Talent is the only thing that you use to make that assessment. Budget is another. Maybe you feel you are contention but there is nothing left in the budget so the budget trumps the talent question.

Also keep in mind... I don't believe that a commitment to youth means the team is not capable of making the playoffs. I was watching in 87 and 91 and I saw what happened when a team simply made the playoffs. So even if I advocate trading Joe Ryan... doesn't mean I think its over. I'm trading Joe Ryan because I don't think this bullpen will get the job done and I know that money is a problem. So let's bring in cheaper talent and let's see what happens.

Per Bobby N:

Gabriel Gonzalez isn’t at CHS Field today. He’s expected to join the Twins for their upcoming series Friday in Boston.

Tristan Gray was expected to go on the three-day paternity list at some point this week.

Sounds like he’s the pick. I guess Kreidler will play SS or 3B for the next few days?

Yup, sounds like the Twins are doing what I said except rather than Mendez it's Gonzalez. Give a rookie a cup of coffee and maybe a few PAs, then send him back to AAA. Kreidler and Arcia can handle 3B for the next 3 days.

Yeah, Gonzalez is probably just a bench guy for the weekend unless they want another righty against Tolle?

I'm pretty confident Gonzalez will start against Tolle. Doesn't make a lot of sense to call up a legit prospect and let him sit for 3 days when we need RH bats against Tolle today.... But then again, Twins do a number of things that don't make a lot of sense.

Probably true

But, it will bleed down to the next roster move and the next. I'd love to take a look at Culpepper but that discussion shouldn't be for a temporary paternity leave.

That's an option in regards to it's time to cut Gray and roll with Culpepper.

Otherwise... Let's not start his clock for paternity leave.

My point was cutting Gray is far, far from the only option. Someone else can go once he’s back.

Agreed... There are many options. One thing though... I think it was String who mentioned it in a different post and I know String watches this type of stuff.

The 40 man roster is 20 Hitters - 20 Pitchers. Most teams will be a little higher on the pitching side. The majority of the low hanging fruit is on the pitching side and they will need those roster spots for the experimentation that the bullpen is going to need.

On the hitting side... It's Gray, Arcia, Kriedler and Outman as the leading candidates for a DFA.

In my opinion... our infield depth looks a little like our bullpen depth so a DFA of Gray, Arcia or Kriedler is... well... Scary despite our expectations of them. If Culpepper is called up... that's it... Lewis and Culpepper our infield options. Cut Gray add Culpepper. Man... you really starting getting down into... scary land.

So we are back to Outman.

And... this discussion is just different if we are talking about a paternity leave or DFA'ing Outman or someone else.

I look forward to seeing Ggon play. I really hope he plays tonight.
