Trying new things?

Matthew Leach:
Coulombe listed as Twins starter for today. Festa listed among available relievers so my guess is he’s an opener. But working to find out more.

I mentioned this strategy for Sim yesterday with Coulombe to start. Hard to believe they are reading the forum for ideas.. hey I have lots of ideas..

Frelick, batting lead-off and Yelich in the three-hole, are both LH, imagine Rocco wants a clean inning from Coulombe and Festa comes in to start the 2nd against Contreras.

I have never understood the opener concept, so you have Coulombe pitch the first inning instead of the 5th inning.  And you take the starter out of his routine.  The Twins need to develop starters, stop limiting them in the minors so they are ready to pitch reasonable innings and pitch counts when they come up.  And stop with the opener nonsense.

I think in this case it makes sense because their best left-handed hitters start the game 1st and 3rd in the order. So you want them to face your best lefty. NOw, in general the concept not always work,

So long as Wentz doesn't pop up in the third (or God forbid later in the first) to face them again.

Then Yelich comes later in the game let's say the 6th or 7th inning with runners on, who are you going bring in.  If you don't have quality starters to get players out in the beginning of the game, either develop better or acquire better players.  This is the same as they have done on the hitting side the last few years, pull your LH hitter early in the game then they are not available later and you end up with a weaker match up.  At some point you have to construct your roster with players that can produce, you are not going to match up for every situation due to the roster size.

I believe the theory is to let the opener polish off the first 3 hitters...then your starter begins his day by pitching to the weaker heart of the order...the 4-9 guys.

Then, when the 1-3 guys see your starter...it's their first look.

Is their any advantage to this strategy?

Slight if any. Few teams do it.

No clean inning for Rocco

Twin Citians have to choose which really bad team to watch today in 96-degree heat and 70% humidity. Twins or Saints. Tough call.

And remember: if you want to see Raya pitch in St Paul…you need to have left your house about 30 minutes ago.

Well, that theory definitely didn't work today.  Pretty much as I expected to be the case.

Bonus! Festa gets to start with the 6-9 hitters!

The opener pitching plan worked.  They only scored 1

I saw him in Cedar Rapids, I did not see what the hype is all about.
