jaimedude Verified Member Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 Our manager is familiar with him. We need another left hander in the bullpen pretty bad. Thielbar is mop up guy now, not a hold or save reliever. Rogers, has closing experience. I would trust our managers evaluation over the Giants manager. I mean if Twins can pay Manny Margot 12 million, why not Taylor Roger's. Maybe Maki can get him back on track. Need a roll of the dice as bullpen has really high ERA right now. This team needs another bullpen piece badly. If ownership steps up, team and fans will. I really do think old friend Roger's would give Twins a boost. The talent is still there and the dude can pitch, has quality. Tonkin will help us. If they need to dump salary next year, next year is next year. This bullpen needs shot in the arm.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 The 33-year-old is owed roughly $2.15 million this season and $12 million for 2025. Would I do it this year? Absolutely. $12 million next year is the problem. FlyingFinn, DocBauer and Richie the Rally Goat 3
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 Interesting that the Giants are doing what the White Sox did last year getting rid of multiple veterans before Sept 1st. We need waiver wire trade deadline back. Cory Engelhardt and jaimedude 2
jaimedude Verified Member Posted August 29, 2024 Author Posted August 29, 2024 Rogers would make other guy's better, and lengthen the pen. The salary seems to be the going rate in MLB for top end middle to back end relievers, and may be a roadblock I agree. Not a fan of the level. The bullpen really needs a boost right now a stabilizing force, and Twins could use left handed option. Not doing something at the deadline is coming home to roost. Twins are clearly short a lefty and the season is on the verge of going completely South to circling the drain. I would call it a needed hail Mary pass, but your not losing a player, and some other guys like Descalfini come off books next year. Twins front office and ownership would be wise to roll the dice on Roger's, he has quality stuff and our team needs the help. 60 day IL Paddock is an option as he is about that far out. They had really good revenue on Green Day concert. Get this lefty, get some guys back and we can still make a run in October. Things seem bleak, but we are not out of it yet.

Trov Verified Member Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 The fact that SF is willing to pay Rogers 12 million next year to not pitch for them tells you much about what they think of him. He may be doing okay this year, but he actually has negative WPA, which is not good. No way will our FO commit to 12 mil next year for him. If it was just the rest of this year I bet they might. It was an unfair advantage granted to the team that just happened to be in the catbird seat at the time of the transaction. IE worst record out of playoff contenders. This should have been addressed after it happened last year. I won't dispute the claim that MLB Commissioners office is the worst. However... I have a sneaking suspicion that the MLBPA is the most powerful union of all the major sports and I think they can be a major roadblock to what I think is necessary change. The current language that allows Moore, Giolito and Lopez to be available for one team to significantly upgrade their roster is language that is crafted in negotiation with the MLBPA. Bed mates, in an ironic way. The MLBPA seems to have an agenda which mostly promotes the highest salaried players but largely abandons the integrity of the game. I guess that isn't the focus of the MLBPA though. One would think there would be more push to arrange a better deal for those players who yo-yo back and forth between the minors and majors. Do all players on the 40 person roster receive the MLB minimum salary? I don't think so but don't know for sure. I'm not sure the owners have any ideas about the game as long as the money flows. The current media fiascos seemingly indicates a paucity of long term thought. Riverbrian and DocBauer 2

I'm ok with that. What needs to change is the claim order process. What teams get the jettisoned players? Last Year Cleveland was able to gain a potentially unfair advantage over the other teams in the playoff race because they happened to have a worse record than the others. That worse record could have been the difference of 1 single game. The Angels released enough talent last year to potentially single handedly provide one squad with difference making talent over everybody else. When a Jordan Luplow gets released... it barely moves the needle. The Angels released needle movers. The Angels changed the game and did so quickly when they dumped Giolito, Moore, Lopez and Renfroe plus others. 3 of them ended up in Cleveland. The Angels saved 5.7 million dollars dumping a significant portion of their roster and Cleveland spent 3.7 million dollars for the stretch run. I'm OK if MLB likes the releasing of difference makers... that's fine. They just can't end up on single one team. The Claim order process needs to be changed and it hasn't been to my knowledge. The Angels exposed a loop hole last year... that hole is still looped. In the end... it wasn't enough to push Cleveland into the playoffs... but it sure could have. What the Giants did is the same concept... save some money in a lost year although it isn't near the scale of what the Angels did. As I complain about this... I fully admit that if the Twins would have swept up all the players last year instead of Cleveland... I'd probably not be as concerned. 😉 Shaitan 1

It is not a loophole as unlike before where a team could work out a trade now they just risk losing the player for nothing, generally in hopes of saving money on their books. You do put a guy on waivers unless you are hoping someone takes him now. Before every player would be put on waivers. So I was wrong about them paying him to not pitch next year, I misread the waivers he was on, but they are still hoping someone claims him and his 12 mil next year. I would not say a relief pitcher that has a negative WPA is doing well. His surface numbers are not bad, but he clearly has cost his team more than he has helped them according to that stat.

I just wanted to point out how far away from the topic of claiming Rogers on waivers this is. I would like to see the Twins do something to bolster the pen but I think the real issue is the offense. they are not consistently scoring enough runs. The bullpen has to be perfect every time out with how we are scoring lately. its either a few runs or 6+ every 5th game. Scoring should be 4 runs a game + over half the time and its not.

I was really hoping the Twins would claim him...until I found out about the $12M owed next year. Since he has gone unclaimed, clearly nobody wanted that contract. Does anybody know if the waiver claim is an all of nothing situation? Is there any way for the Giants to swallow part of the contract in order to induce a claim? I'm guessing no and assume Rogers will not be changing venues for this season. The Twins should consider a reunion for 2025 if the can reduce that salary because the LH bullpen situation is awful right now.

There is no opportunity to pay a portion down. The Giants will probably try to move him in the off-season and then they can pay down some of the 12 million in order to get a deal done.

Wouldn't mind seeing them do this if they can get SF to eat half that contract, depending what we would have to give up. They only have something like 95M committed next year and a lot of cheap players that should probably be filling the lineup.
