I’m sure that’s what Nick meant.

Putting Buck on the IL is tough only in that finding a replace would create a 40-man issue. The only position players at St. Paul on the roster are Julien and Camargo as well as the injured Severino and Rodriguez. They could recall Julien, I suppose, and move Castro to the OF.

E-rod to the 60 day?  He played two rehab games in early July but that's it since June 5th.

Garland did a good job getting through a tough first inning, especially one where Farmer should have made the play on the first "hit". Having said that, the huge difference between he and Matthews is jumps out at you. Matthews consistently throws strikes, Varland does not. I don't know if the answer is to back his velocity down a mile per hour or two so he can have more fastball command, or whether he just isn't going to get there, I like his stuff but until he throws more strikes he is a bullpen pitcher.

I suspect the plan here is to give best at another start against the Rangers in Arlington, and Matthews another start in San Diego against a very good team, and see how they do. Maybe  Varland gets one more start in the second game in San Diego depending on whether we can last that long with the seven man bullpen. Hopefully at least two of them perform well. Then we go back to the five-man rotation and one of the three is either in AAA as the sixth starter or in the bullpen. My bet is that Varland will be the odd man out.

The report on Buxton and the subsequent talk about how we're lined up to face lefties tomorrow and Friday in Texas illustrates the need to have had Larnach and Wallner get more chances against lefty pitching in the last month or so.  Playing Larnach today is a good step.  The lineup is better when those two guys are in it and with the way the Rangers rotation sets up, are you really gonna have Wallner sit three straight days?

Well, maybe this is why Varland doesn't throw as many strikes as he needs to be an effective starter. His strikes get hit too hard. I'm rooting for the guy but every time I see him pitch I can't escape the thought of "wouldn't this guy be a good late inning reliever pitching one or maybe two innings at a time?". Gotta think that is his future unless there is some way he can take one more step. Famous last words but I don't think he will last five innings today.

Audra’s update seems to indicate an IL stint is likely. Julien would be the default choice to be recalled, unless they go off the 40-man for Keirsey Jr.

Need a center fielder.

Varland won't make it much past 4th inning as he isn't sharp at all and is throwing a ton of pitches. Twins will need to get the bats going. This game has all the markings of 'we won the series so 2 of 3 ain't so bad'. A comeback win today would be a bonus. We'll see

Stat guys out there...how are we on getaway days? Sure seems to me that we suck, when it comes to them.

1st time thru the lineup, Twins have had some butt ugly AB's. Rev up the 'k' machine. Martin looked like he couldn't care less up there. two awful swings and then he just walked away from strike 3. A bad look.
