Outstanding baserunning by the veteran there.  🤦‍♂️

Swear to God.  A major-league ballplayer with a major-league head up your ... moment.  It's like they're taking turns being a complete doorknob out there.

Now, thanks to Rocco, Sands gets asked to pitch in 3 innings.

RALLY TIME!

By the way-  I just put up a new post, because I'm making my way back to the USA this summer, with a stop at Target Field- for the 1st time!  (My last Twins home game was at the DOME!)

It looks like I'll try for the ChiSox series, early August- just finalizing itinerary this week.  But it would be great if you'd check out that post, and perhaps we can set up a TDer meetup at Target!

Wife and I are going this Thurs and Fri

It's the 3rd baserunning gaffe in 4 games -- Buxton on Friday night getting tricked by the no-look throw, someone (I forget who) on Saturday getting thrown out at 3rd on a ball to the SS, and tonight's.  The play is right in front of you and it makes no difference if you're on 2nd or 3rd when that ball drops because you're still down 2 and there's still only 1 out.

Issue is no accountability. You make a boneheaded play like that, sit for a game or two or even three. It keeps happening and happening.

Cary Elwes Disney Plus GIF by Disney+

Someone, somewhere, thinks they're the smartest person in the room, and can make pitching changes by spreadsheet 6 hours before first pitch.

What would YOU call that?

Joe Maddon write a book a couple of years ago stating that only about 50% of MLB managers have the authority to make most of their own decisions. I guess we can all decide if we think Rocco is making his own moves without a lot of input from the FO.

I consider them an all in one package. I'm ready for a new direction this offseason with a clean sweep.

I'd be OK with that.

I haven't read the book but have seen some discussion about it. If the Angels disfunctional idiot GM is calling the dugout it makes sense why it didn't work there with Maddon.

Maddon teaches a leadership series and has a long track record of the opposite behavior.

I'm pretty confident Rocco is in the 50% making his own calls in an environment that he helped create.

Projection.

This is off topic just to start a different conversation. Recently you replied back to me saying (my paraphrasing) you've never been more excited about the health of the organization. Help me out, because I do want to be positive. Not being able to watch them often has turned me into a box score guy and I don't pay close attention to the minors. Correa is obviously good, but he's not a superstar. Lewis I very much hope is the superstar because we are starving for one.

Hey, didn't you used to be Ryan Jeffers?

Remember when he was in the same sentence as Ohtani in OPS standings at the end of April?  Good times.

Corporate.

Maybe.

But I hold the manager responsible for in game decisions. Lineups. Strategy. Positioning. Pitching moves. PHing. Etc.

Clearly there's a corporate input. It's his job to take way makes sense, and disregard what doesn't.

He gets zero slack from me because someone with a computer told him it'd be a good idea to take Varland out after 2 times through the order, no matter what.

With a thin-ish pen in a game you're deliberately trying to give your staff some rest.

I'm not sure how much he helped in creating anything.  I believe he was handed the playbook after the fact. Varland was slated to go 5 innings. The press box alluded to as much. Call it strategy or projection or whatever. But I'd wager there was no scenario that had Varland at 64 pitches after 5. That's when the in game decisions present themselves. And yet Rocco still made the move. So I'm not so sure he is one of those 50%.

So, Varland was at 63 pitches and cruisiing along, but was getting ready to face the line-up for the 3rd time, = time for a change. Thielbar absolutely imploded, but must be better than Varland on cruise control. THROW this book out and go with the way the game is playing out....

Heh...  I gotta like the moxie on the Rock's 2B- guy's hitting .111 (Worse than Vazquez!), and he takes his time-out, shaking his head over a borderline strike call.  😂
