Roster Crunch? Who stays, who goes?

Recommended Posts

Two keys for me. First, get Lewis up on May 29, especially if Correa needs 10-15 days for his foot. Second, do NOT demote Wallner; play him every day while we are facing RH starters. Let's see what these two guys can do and if they can be the necessary reinforcements this season. Let's find that out now so we have some intel before we hit trading season. How? Demote Garlick if Kepler is ready and keep Wallner. Promote Lewis if Correa or Gallo has to go on the Il.. If not, promote him Monday and demote/DFA Garlick (if Kepler is still out), Solano or Julien. If Polanco is ready, either Julien, Solano or or Castro goes - I would keep up Castro and DFA/demote Solano. Unlikely that there's much of a market for Solano at his age and he's a one year guy anyway.

My overall point is let's find NOW if the MiLB/new guys we have can help us this year.  That's Lewis, Castro, Wallner, and Kirilloff. I don't think Julien is quite ready yet and his defense is just... not good. Keep the other 4 up at the expense of guys like Solano and Garlick, and move Kepler if you need to in order to create room.

How do we create ABs? Here's an idea - play Buxton in LF, not CF, 3-4 of days a week to open up the DH spot. Less balls to LF, less injury risk. Have CF be mostly Castro, with Taylor doing what h we brought him here to do - play CF against LH pitching  and in late inning defensive situations. Gallo can DH to rest his hammy and Wallner can play RF or vice versa. We can get a preliminary read on Wallner over the next 10 days and we can get Lewis acclimated. Let's do it.

I don't like the idea of calling up Miranda, period, full stop.  There is something wrong with him and he needs to get that fixed; until then he has no role on a major league team, sorry to say.

As for Long Man Mushinski, if that isn't his Official nickname, it needs to be.  Long Man Mushinski should be a character in a Mickey Spillane crime novel, a Mark Twain frontier tale, a Damon Runyon short story, or a Grantland Rice sports vignette.  Long Man Mushinski, never good enough to start, never bad enough to get cut, never sober enough to get out of his own way, just putting in the years for the perennially cellar-dwelling Metarie Pelecanidae of the old Western Southern Association League.  Only his mother should be allowed to call him Parker, and only when he is in dutch, at that.

I agree with everything you wrote.

However, Sadly... 40 man considerations and injury timing may get in the way of our wishes on Miranda.

As for the characterizations of your character.

The swinging doors should make that squeeking sound when he leaves the bullpen to enter the field. The crowd should hush with all eyes upon him as he hits the mound to ask the bartender for a shot of whisky and the batter in the white hat needs to keep his hand near his loaded six shooter Louisville Slugger prepared for what is about to come.

And just to modernize into the 1970's at least. ELO should be playing over the speakers... "She Cried to the Southern Wind. About a love that was sure to end. Every dream in her heart was gone. Headin' for a Show Down".

Edit - Correction: Injuries are the factory making the paint. The Right//lefty matchup is buying the paint. Buxton at DH is painting yourself into a corner.

I had to get that straight... I didn't want anyone confused by it. 😎

I'm never confused by some of your analogies ... ever ... 🙈🙉🙊

OK... What do we have. Assuming no other injuries and we should never assume that.

Lewis possibly returning on Monday?

Correa possibly heading to the DL.

That looks like a simple 26 man roster spot switch but we will have to get through the weekend. So we will need a rental.

Lewis is coming off the 60 day so someone will have to go off the 40 man to accommodate.

Who is that guy?

Kepler coming back soon?

Gallo... Who knows is current health status but he is still on the roster.

That would be a simple roster spot switch but maybe Gallo doesn't need extended time off.

Someone will have to go down to clear 26 man room for Kepler if Gallo is OK.

The options are pretty limited.

Gordon to the 60 to make room for Lewis on the 40.

Weekend rental Miranda to the 26 -- Correa to the DL to make room for Miranda. Has to be Miranda otherwise we are dropping someone off the 40 man roster just for a potential short term rental with Lewis arriving on Monday.

It should be Garlick that goes down for Kepler. Garlick would be a pylon on the bench with the string of right handers that are on the horizon. Maybe 2 or 3 pinch hit AB's in the next 9 games is the most we could expect and then they probably need to burn a defensive sub for Garlick if he hits. Castro would have to be held out of the lineup for that specific Garlick replacement duty. Toronto has one left hander in the pen (Mayza). Houston has 1 left hander in the pen (Long Man Mushinski). Cleveland has one lefty in the pen (Hentges... he's from Minnesota... he won't try hard because he wouldn't want to hurt us). Garlick will be a pylon. The Righthanders are coming and this platoon thing seems to be important to Rocco regardless of how everyone is hitting.

Yes, sending Garlick down creates that Gallo, Kirilloff, Kepler, Wallner left handed thing. So they could send Wallner down for Kepler but keep in mind... Garlick will be gathering dust.

Lewis comes up on Monday. Need to send someone down. This is where it should be Garlick if Wallner is sent down. I don't like the idea of calling up Miranda with an immediate expiration date. But if it's Garlick going down now you got that Farmer, Miranda, Lewis right handed thing.

Julien should be safe until Polanco gets back because he is left handed and at least hitting a home run every 13 AB's.

Whatever they do... I'll tell you this... They would have a much easier time figuring things out if Buxton could play some CF. Because the DH spot could be used for that left handed thing problem or that right handed thing problem.

Although... I want to be clear... I don't personally think that the left handed or right handed thing are problems. WE NEED HITTERS.

I will counter the Garlick going down cuz he won't play idea with keeping Garlick up because he won't play.

Argument #1: The "threat" of him on the bench may motivate an opposing manager to leave their righties in, and I'd prefer that so Rocco doesn't get crazy with his substitutions. The other teams only having 1 lefty gives Rocco the chance to be more straight forward with his lineups, and force the opposing manager's hand a bit with when to use that lefty. Now Rocco could go off the rails and really get wild with things so maybe it's not the best idea, but, assuming he'll be pretty sane with it, having Garlick on the bench as a counter to their lefty usage is pretty nice for lineup strategy.

Argument #2: With Garlick being the bench bat Rocco/the team will feel less, or no, pressure to play him. They seem fine letting certain guys "rot" on the bench, and I think they'd do that with Garlick as they seem to see him as strictly a platoon bat vs lefties. That means they'll be more inclined to set, and forget, their lineup. This stretch could be what a number of us have been asking for in that Rocco takes his best hitters, puts them at the top of the order for a week+ straight, and we see what they can do. Julien-Correa/Lewis-Kirilloff-Buxton-Gallo-Farmer-Wallner-Catcher-Taylor and let it roll for a week.

Solano and Garlick on the bench is a nice package to have late in games depending on how the lineup falls for the opposing manager. If they use the lefty against Wallner you can make the move to one of the righties. It also lessens the chance you see the lefty at all since they're both such well thought of hitters against lefties so the manager may favor using their superior righty pitcher against the Twins lefties. If it's just Solano on the bench it's easier for the opposing manager to pick the section of the lineup he wants to target and know his lefty will get a positive matchup somewhere. With 2 righty bats on the bench his lefty wouldn't see a single lefty unless he's allowing runners or pitching multiple innings. Advantage Twins.

The biggest question is the 3 games this weekend before Lewis is eligible to return. I think playing the series with a banged up Gallo, and unavailable Correa would be a mistake. Have to decide on Correa before tomorrow's game. Then it's is Kepler healthy, do you bring up Miranda, or are you playing 40-man games? I'd rather have Miranda up for 3 days than play 40-man games, because I don't see anyone in the minors as being truly useful and worth the DFA move for them in 3 days, or a vet now. Miranda getting a little time around the big club for the weekend isn't the end of the world. Could be worse than a couple big league ABs and Correa in his ear.

I'd put Alcala on the 60-day IL and bring up Hernan Perez.  (Alcala's already 10 days past his last game appearance, and if he needs rehab time at AAA if-and-when he's healthy again, that will be some portion of the remaining 50 days.  I'm skeptical we'll see him on the field again this season.)

When-and-if Royce Lewis is ready for the majors, DFA Perez;.

Perez is no great shakes and he won't be claimed.  But for a few days he can contribute in ways on both sides of the ball that MIranda just can't right now.  I haven't seen Perez play but I assume he's just mediocre-to-poor, not helpless.

This is the downside of carrying 22 pitchers and only 18 batters on the 40-man.  But pitching is the coin of the realm and it's more difficult to acquire a reasonable arm than it is to replace Hernan Perez in the unlikely event he gets claimed.  So I can understand why the FO chooses the 22-18 split, or even sometimes 23-17 and 24-16 during the winter.  But we're at the time of year where 21-19 seems more sustainable.  If they really want to get back to 22-18 in a few weeks by DFAing a position player and none of those are hurt, Solano and Garlick both have bulleyes taped to the backs of their uniforms by clubhouse practical jokers.

We could think outside the box and bring up someone other than a middle infielder to replace Correa on the roster, since SS is covered in his absence by both Farmer and Castro.  Move Castro out of LF and replace him on the roster with... ummm....., errrr....., well, that's the problem, among the non-prospect players even the outfielders aren't hitting - Contreras started hot but his AAA OPS is below .700 in the month of May (and I could cherry pick a little to make it even worse), so knock 100 points off of that when coming up to the majors and he's not even playable in a corner OF spot and he's pretty marginal in center.

Yeeesh, we chide ourselves for making fun of the AAA signings over the winter, but now that we've called up the genuine prospects and still need one good reinforcement, there really isn't anybody.  What did we sign Hernan Freaking Perez for, except for an emergency situation anyway?  We need someone for a few days, put someone on the 60-day and just call him up.

I forgot about Alcala.

Yeah... OK... Hernan had a couple of average to above average years with the Brewers... Showed a little pop plus some speed. He might be able to get some pinch running done for us.

Good Call.

I wish he was hitting better in the minors but I don't think he will be sent to the plate very often... He has good speed... but in theory... like a little structure on the Florida panhandle... just a weekend rental.

I see... you are a chess player. OK... Queens knight to C6.

My counter move is to get Mayza in early... force Rocco to burn his right handers and then make Garlick face a right hander with the game in the desperate moments. There are only 4 lefties on the roster as of right now. If these matchups matter... Let's get them out of the game.

Yeah, that'd certainly be an option for Toronto, but how easy is it? You pulling your starter after 5 to make that happen? Burning through 4 pen arms just to get Garlick in the game? Do you risk using your lefty against Julien, Kirilloff, or Gallo segment of the lineup and risk Rocco letting his lefty hit? Cuz now you've pulled your starter early and are using a number of bullpen arms and you didn't even get Garlick in the game (for the record I'm sure Rocco would use Solano and Garlick no matter who the lefty is cuz that's how this team rolls).

These are also games 15-17 with no off days for the Jays. How creative can they be? How heavily can they rely on their pen right now? Their starter went 3 last night. Mayza threw 1 inning. 2 nights ago their starter went 5. Berrios went 7 3 nights ago, and Mayza threw 1 inning. Bassitt toughed out 6.1 the night before that. Gausman was great for 8 5 nights ago, but they went extras and had to use 3 relievers. If Toronto wants to pull Gausman in the 5th or 6th to get Garlick in the game tonight I'm saying advantage Twins for the series.

Watch tower to cone head red 52, set, hike! (I'm terrible at chess so this feels like an unfair advantage to you)

The Toronto manager came from the Rays organization and I'm sure his advance scouts have told him about the Giants game.

Toronto starts with an opener and Rocco burns the bench moves in the 2nd inning.

I like the creativity. I'd actually try to get Rocco to burn his bench moves in the 1st in this scenario. Start a righty opener, but go to the lefty in the first, intentionally walk 2 guys to get both Kirilloff and Gallo out of the game, then turn to Gausman in the 2nd for 8 shutout, 1 hit, 17 K innings and call it a night.

Wait, now I'm moving your pieces.

All the work for nothing! After all the planning we all did. Not only is Correa not on the D.L,.. He's in the lineup and Garlick is starting against a Right Hander.

Unless the FO had more definitive information about Correa's heel than they shared publicly, you can bet that (at least) some underling was asked to work up two or three scenarios that someone in the Big Chair would then choose from in the event that a move needed to be made.  That's not wasted effort on their part, and for us it's fun to try to "play along at home."

IOW I stand by my work, amateur hour though it may be. :)

OK... Back to the chess game.

Maybe... By placing Kirilloff and Julien so close together in the lineup last night... maybe... Rocco intended to draw Mayza out yesterday.

Mayza has now pitched in back to back nights and 3 out of the last 4 games. Reasonable assumption that Mayza is out for today's game. Nothing but right handers available in the pen if that is the case.

Rocco has possibly countered this today by stacking all of his left handers at the top of the lineup with Gallo, Julien, Kirilloff, Castro and Wallner hitting 1,2,4,5 and 6 in the order.

Bench consists of:

Correa (Abundance of caution with the heel?) (Stacking the left handers?)(Who Knows)

Garlick

Solano

Vazquez

Pinch hitting will only take place if Rocco decides to pinch hit for Taylor or Jeffers late in the game. He most likely won't sub a righty for a lefty to face a righty and he probably won't pinch hit for Buxton or Farmer.

Feet up Game for Rocco.

Ok because it’s what I do, here’s the other shoe:

i really really really think they need to drop a pitcher. I would have kept up Wallner and dropped De Leon, who pitched two innings today, and can’t/won’t/shouldn’t be used in the next series anyway.

Wallner needs to play every day. With who else is on the roster zero chance that could happen.

Wallner did a lot in his short stay on the active major league roster, more good than bad. The unfortunate thing is that he is a one-position corner OF and for the near future there isn't a DH slot to put him in. Also, the window for Larnach is closing.

You think Larnach will go down when Polanco is ready? Not Solano.

Oh right. Totally forgot Larnach had pneumonia. I think Hosken’s suggestion has merit. Try one less pitcher. Although, until Pagán is put on the IL we are already down one
