Gordon's play today does raise an interesting question: What does the team do if the kid plays like a friggin' star the whole time Polanco and Arraez are healing up?

Arraez is the example. If Gordon plays well, he's here to stay. Cave will be let go.

Agree - this ticky-tack stuff where the guy's foot comes off for .0000026 seconds, gets reviewed for 15 minutes and then gets called out? Total garbage.

To call a guy out like that isn't in the spirit of the rule. It's changing the game. Those instances should be ruled "inconsequential non-base contact" or something.

Strongly disagree.  The rule is if a ball is live and a runner is contacted with the ball (or a glove with the ball in it) while not in contact with a base, the runner is out.  Your hope of changing it is actually changing the game.  If you're a baserunner in the bigs, you better know how to slide into a base without overrunning it.  If you can't, then you have no business baserunning.

They'll keep him up because middle infield depth, particularly on defense, is not a strength on this team. I'm not sure if Gordon is a better SS than Polanco but I doubt he's worse because Jorge is pretty bad nowadays (in all the ways, really).

I know he was safe, but it was close because he almost didn't have his foot on the bag. If the MLB wants to increase action on the bases, which it appears they do, they need to change the stolen base rule. If the runner beats the tag, he's safe, even if his foot or hand come off the bag for half a second.

I couldn't disagree more. If you're out, you're out.

Where do we stop with this?

"He ALMOST beat the throw to first, he should be safe!"

"He caught that liner on a short hop, call the guy out!"

"Another foot and it would have been a home run! That's less than 0.33 percent of the distance required! Give it to him!"

"Well yeah, hr rounded 3rd, and got tagged out, but he had already reached 3rd safely! He can't be out any more after that!"

Think this through. It's...unworkable. You come off the bag, and get tagged, you're out.

Sad day for many...................Angels DFA Albert Pujols.

Sano, Polanco and Cave should take notes.

Buxton and Cruz have certainly cooled down.

Seems like the Twins always have one guy who's hot, but they can't seem to get a group of guys all going at once.

Rortvedt looks overmatched at this level, offensively. In his last start he also allowed a bunch of stolen bases without even an attempt at a throw.

Love the speed Gordon!! 2 Stolen bases already - brings some life to the lineup

Yeah, but did you see his stolen base rate in the minors? He was thrown out 30% of the time. I love it too, but ... watch out for those SSS's.

A contender for the Walter Sobchak "Over the line" post Award.

Yup Gordon at SS and Polanco at 2B.

Just like a few hundred posts on this site said back in 2015.

So long as one out of Donaldson, Simmons, Polanco, or Arraez are on the IL, I agree--Gordon stays up.  If all of those guys are healthy, the choice becomes Astudillo or Gordon--I'm not sure Nick wins that one.

Everything comes back into fashion eventually!

Just like stolen bases in today's game!

I don't know how much longer the Twins can be patient with Sano here. This is getting ridiculous

Hey at least he looks like a major league hitter, unlike Kepler and Polanco.

Posted

Sano can't hit a ball on the lower outside part of the plate. That's all they threw him. Got a little help from the ump on one of those strikes, but if you can't hit that pitch then you've got problems.

Miguel Sano used to be able to go the other way. Haven't seen him go to right field in years.

He has a .118 average

Oh, but he's a power hitter? .235 SLG

You don't even have to go to completely unrelated close plays.

Where do you draw the line between running to the bag and through it? And did he take the turn to advance when the runner thought it overthrown?

He’s at least putting together somewhat professional ABs.

Really? Those two are at least hitting above the Mendoza line. Sano can't even see it from where he's standing.

Yet somehow a .325 OBP because he is taking pitches and drawing walks.

Which was something Polanco and Kepler were supposed to be good at but no longer are.

those 2 three pitch Ks were indeed something no amateur could do.

Nvm then. I didn’t see those. My bad.

To be fair the ump didn’t help with that last AB, still a K
