Twins Roster Moves - 2021

Another example of the failure of this regime's scouting accumen.  We've gotten and will now never get any contribution from Anderson, while Wade is thriving with the division leading Giants.  Everyone on this board knew that Cave should have been the one sent packing.  Not Wade.

That series of events is perhaps the biggest bungle of this front office's tenure, IMO. I don't think most reasonable people expected greatness from Wade Jr but the consensus seemed to settle somewhere around "good fourth OF option, possibly an acceptable starter". To get nothing for that guy is a significant screw-up.

Just to clarify, the Barraclough deal is a minor league one.

Twins 40-man roster is still at 39 after losing Shaun Anderson (and not counting Colina on the 60-day IL) so we'd have room to add someone like him, though.

With Buxton's injury last night, it is certain he will go on the Injured List. If the Twins can get someone to Minneapolis today for the afternoon game, I would assume it would be a pitcher since the bullpen is depleted and Ober hasn't gone more than four innings in any start. They could call up a starter to piggyback with Ober, if one is rested and option or DFA him after the game.

Seems difficult. I assume the Saints were already in (or in route to) Columbus, OH, last night and the Twins game is at noon in Minneapolis today.

We have a day off on Wednesday so we can be pretty aggressive today -- Duffey and Robles didn't pitch last night, Colomé only threw 7 pitches, and it was Farrell's first appearance in a week so I imagine he'd be good for a back-to-back. It might even be Dobnak's throw day, if they needed him in an emergency? He started on Saturday. The off day tomorrow would let them reset the rotation as needed.

Also, Ober did complete 5 innings vs Houston 11 days ago. Maybe part of pulling him early (50-60 pitches) in some games is so they can lean on him a bit more when they need to (70-80 pitches?).

Apparently, Celestino for Buxton. Yea.

Not sure I get this. Kepler and Gordon can play center. They need to figure out if Gordon is worth keeping around......

Kepler is coming back from a hamstring injury and Gordon isn't a centerfielder. The prudent decision is recalling Celestino.

We don't know Gordon isn't a CF.......plenty of players have moved position. We do know Gordon has hit this year, and has shown some of that first round promise. It is a waste of a year not to see if he's potentially a useful player. That's what this year should be about.

I completely agree. Let’s put Gordon in Center until Refsnyder is ready to come back and see if he can handle the position. That’s exactly what kind of thing we need to know for next year. Celestino seems like a nice fielder, but his bat is not ready for the MLB level. He will need some time in AAA before he can be back up centerfielder or replace Buxton.

I’m all in favor of Gordon getting reps in center but no way do you just roll out a guy full-time at a position he’s never played.

Especially because he also needs continued reps in the MI and third base.

Polanco has 2nd locked down, so I'm not sure where Gordon plays in the MI at this point. Third? I'd be ok with that. But that's a trap. At some point, Donaldson is healthy (is he the DH next year, or is Sano?). So many bat first no real position guys on this roster.....just bad roster construction.

It’s unlikely Gordon is a starting player anywhere but he *could* be a capable utility player. The team knows he can play second but can he play short? Hard to say, as he hasn’t really played there in a few years.

Move him around the diamond, see what he’s capable of doing. Given the constant stream of injuries, it’s also the best way to get him the most reps to get a better feel for where his bat is right now.

I agree it is unlikely.....but he was once considered a very good prospect, and he's healthy, and well, I'd like to see him get a real shot in a lost year. They could use some prospect luck......

I agree in that he should be playing at least three times a week right now and even more than that after the deadline.

We signed Sean Gilmartin to a minor league contract, per mlbtraderumors.

Huzzah for the crafty lefties! (I think... not that i'm over familiar with his body of work, i just figure that's what is left these days)

Griffin Jax was sent to AAA to make room for Pineda.

Random aside, the Twins are still at 39 on the 40 man roster (Shaun Anderson's spot has yet to be filled), and Devin Smeltzer is certainly eligible for the 60 day IL. They could add anyone they want at this point. Perhaps Charlie Barnes next? Josh Winder?

Can't say I expected Shoemaker to accept assignment to AAA but he did.

Well, he probably has a temporary residence that he is paying for in town. No one grabbed him. He can probably pitch for the Saints to see if he can raise his stock. He is still getting paid his two million.

No, the Twins are currently full at 40 with Stashak, Colina and Cave on the 60-day. They waiver claimed Beau Burrows and had to add him to the 40-man, for some odd reason.

I see Trade-Bait: Robles, Rogers, Berrios, Cruz, Thielbar, Simmons, Pineda, Donaldson. I see letting go: Happ, Colombe. I see Refsnyder and Garlik not sticking around, as well as Cave and possibly Rooker. They can also open up 40-man spots by not keeping Jax, Law or Astuliddo. Be interesting to see if Colina and Stashak remain on the 40-man come the fall.

Plus, why Burrows?

Maybe he just like playing baseball.

My take exactly .... many people really underestimate how much passion these athletes  have for the game. Individual's play beyond their physical limitations because of love for the sport; I have great respect for this trait.

We can be tired of a player but still admire their dedication and desire.

40-man roster move needed! And also need to make one for Cave!

Do they have to add Barnes to the 40-man? He would be the 27th man.

On another transaction topic, what is happening with Rob Refsnyder? He has/had a hamstring issue that wasn’t regarded as very serious. He’s reported to be sprinting, but hasn’t gone to St. Paul for rehab. There would seem to be an easy transaction to make (Refsnyder for Celestino) and the Twins could use another RH bat.

Reading the tea leaves, I’m guessing that Garlick will go on the 60-day list. With the imminent return of Cave and Garver, it would appear some room will need to be made on the roster. I doubt Cave would be shown the door.
