It's going to be a long season. I am afraid that this might not be the season we expect.

It’s always preferable to see players perform well but it has been shown time and time again that the correlation between spring training and the regular season is very weak. I want to see healthy players and pay no attention to the stats (though it’s always depressing to experience a miserable game like this one).

Long... and not what we expect?

So... Winter is coming?

(ps. i have come to the realization my favorite member of the house Stark is Tony)

I remember one year during the post-2010 dark ages where I believe they finished spring training at the top of the Grapefruit league and I had hopes that they were going to start the turn-around.   It did not end up being a good season and might have ended up being the year where they did not win their first game until around August.

At least you're setting yourself up to be pleasantly surprised.

I'd rather be there than where the Oriole fans were when they had "MVP" penciled in next to Jake Fox.

A question for TD readers: Faster in a footrace -- Jim Thome or Nelson Cruz?

To be determined.

Thome and Cruz wanted to settle this question once and for all, with a foot race, back in 2012.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the answer, because neither has crossed the finish line yet.

The three catchers/"catchers" with MLB experience on the Twins' 40-man roster have 2 cubed, 3 cubed, and 4 cubed as their uniform numbers: Garver #8, Jeffers #27, and Astudillo #64.

Let's not forget that Junior Ortiz wore 0 cubed.

I didn't.

Regarding cubes, and this is highly important, we mustn't forget Junior Ortiz, the catcher who wore 0 cubed.

Oops -- had I read post No. (10 squared plus 8 squared), I'd have seen that it was already mentioned. But at least us great minds are thinking alike!

Caution: heavy but easily understandable math involved.

Very cool videos about cubes:

Thanks. This will be some interesting watching.

Heh. Spring Training team performance has almost zero correlation with regular season team performance. It's close enough to zero to be completely useless.

But on the individual player level, the correlation is slightly better but still weak enough that spring stats don't tell us much. My understanding is that the only way ST correlation becomes even remotely useful is when you weigh previous season performance with current spring performance and then spit out a number but nobody here is doing that so it's outside this conversation a bit.

Evening game?! Since when are Spring Training games in the evening (5:05pm CDT)?

Top questions:

How important is spin rate really?

Do tops get dizzy?

How much faster does using a string make it?

Is a yoyo just a top that can't let go of its string?

How does one get on a gyroscopic career path?

Anyway, enjoy the baseball game!

And here we go. Ohio State University versus Oral Roberts!

Oops, wrong game. My sister-in-law would not forgive me if she saw this comment.

Tied 2-2 on a wild pitch w/ bases loaded. 5th inning just ended... (Phew!)

I thought it was scored a passed ball?

Congrats to Oral Roberts!

How many 15 seeds is that to advance?

I was always pulling for Robert Morris when they made the tourney...
