How is schoop hitting .260? Must be in non clutch situations

He's batting .173 with runners in scoring position. .240 with base runners on.

So does the catcher have to tag the batter on strike 3 if the ball hits the dirt before the catcher makes a clean catch?

The batter is not out if the catcher does not catch and hold the pitch in the air except if there is a runner on first with less than two outs. The batter then has to be tagged or be called out on a force play at first base. If there are two outs and runner(s) on base said runner(s) would also be in play to be forced out at the next base they are advancing to. I have seen the play a few times where the bases are loaded with two outs and strike three is not caught in the air by the catcher, who then picks up the ball and steps on home plate to force the runner advancing from third to home.

Edit: the batter is out if he leaves the area around home plate even if he is not otherwise put out.

Just checking in to say, the Buxton baserunning blunder is about as bad a mistake as you'll ever see.

You learn in little league why that's incredibly stuoid....it might cost a run.

And it did.

I thought that was the case. Thanks.

I disagree with the folks saying Buxton made a baserunning mistake. He’s the fastest guy in the league and other teams are allowed to make good plays too.

Yes, but you have to know you’ll probably get to third before the guy ahead of you gets home. That’s a big and unnecessary risk when you’re already in scoring position and have his speed

That was a painfully long half inning, but Littell has looked really good since converting to a reliever. Outside of that awful outing against Tampa where he gave up 8 runs, he has pitched 9 scoreless innings.

Agree 100%

there's nothing to disagree with. Stupid decision, Buxton knows it, every player on both teams knows it.

You just don't do that. Ever.

Specifically because it's stupid, and might cost a run, for very little gain.

True, there are pros and cons.

Look at it another way. If Buxton doesn’t tag and Gallo’s throw sails in somewhere near the on deck circle, then everyone will rightly claim Buxton should be on third.

Don’t do what? Tag on a medium fly to center? :)

Got the outlaws in town from Pittsburgh today and for the next few days...Couldn't join the fray today.  Just wanted to jump on and say GO TWINS!  I'm sure we'll pull ahead now.  Sorry it took me so long.  Didn't mean for the team to languish all day.  Apologies!

tag on a medium fly to center with one out already and a runner on third who will be tagging.

Sorry, but this is just baseball 101. This is something every player knows.

Boneheaded, and Buxton already knew this and would tell you the same.

He made a bad mental error, it's not the end of the world, but it's not questionable in any way, either.

Hopefully it doesnt cost a win.

Ok so maybe Buxton ran us out of an inning this time, but this is also the guy who is free to run at any time.

let’s call it baseball 300-level, and call it a day?

The Buxton baserunning play is one of those where if you do it you damn well better be safe. I think he was assuming the throw would go to home. If you're going to be aggressive this type of thing will happen from time to time. I think Rocco will be discussing this matter with Buck if he hasn't already.
