Our pen has no depth and lacks 1 more wipe out arm. Burdi, Boozy, Reed, Reed, and Jay effed us. Vasquez better find his ****. Who has the cat we brought in from the Royals this winter?

Nick Burdi has an insane k rate for the pirates so far this year. Then there is Nick Anderson...

Cron swung at a pitch so far inside it hit his hand and not the bat. It was ruled a swing and a miss because it didn't hit the bat - what a pathetic swing it was (either way the umpire's call went).

Seems it is better to be traded for, than come up through the ranks to get playing time on this team.

You gotta give Mejia a break here. Hard to be sharp when you haven't pitched in a week. If they're in the pen you have to use them or it's not sustainable anyway.

Nothing like taking it out on the ump when you have just made your own calls to blow the game. Seriously... Cron was swinging.... Baldelli a bit childish.

But Baldelli stayed calm, didn't throw a fit or anything. I didn't mind that.

He has pitched. Sessions. He should be rested and ready. Sooooo give 'em a break when they pitch too often .... and when they don't pitch? When are they going to be responsible?

Nice pun! Because his slider had absolutely no break

Oh Mejia is responsible. His stat line will show it. My point is that he hasn't hasn't been done any favors with the he's been used. Get a feel for when you can sneak some of these guys in. Play the hot hand some like as someone said leave Harper in for two. This pen is way to thin if you don't get everyone in.

who was he supposed to pitch?

This is on the pen, and Falvine.

The pen rears its partially ugly head again.

You cant get by in today's baseball with a weak pen. Bullpens are used every game, and a strong, deep one is one of the primary keys to winning.

Too bad the team had no money, and there were no free agent relief pitchers available.....

You can't win every game. You also can't use Rogers and Hildenberger every game.

With that said, Mejia may be the least watchable pitcher right now.

Someday, I hope to see a manager that understands that there is no guarantee that the team will be in a position to win tomorrow.  Quit worrying about a guy being unavailable out of the 'pen TOMORROW until that need presents itself.  If Mejia had to pitch the 8th tomorrow out of necessity, I could understand.  We weren't there yet.

The splits in the 8th were essentially neutral.  May should have pitched the 8th (there was a strong case for Harper to pitch a second inning given how well the ball was coming out of his hand) and Hildy the 9th.  For all we know, 2-3 innings of mop up work will be available tomorrow.

Also, I don't know what trash prep program we're running if we can't give Perez the ball in the 7th with something like 1,200 games in a row upcoming.  Being on a pitch count when we've known this is the game he'd start for the last 30 years is insane.

The managing (both general and game) errors are mounting.

Mejia is a dinosaur. Like most Rule 5 guys. He's a vestige of the way baseball was once played. The fact that he has no options hamstrings the club. He can't go to AAA and get work, and he's not trust worthy on the roster. A rotating spot for fresh arms or an extra guy when someone gets banged up but not enough to go to the IL is valuable and would be used all year. My guess, like Austin, we'll end up releasing him anyway.

And I actually like Mejia. Apparently incredible spin rate on the 4 seamer. But no options equals no flexibility.

Is Jake Reed worth calling up?

Yes, he kicked butt at AAA last year, but had some problems with walks (BB/9 of 4.0, which isn't horrid). The FO just doesn't seem interested in using him, he'll probably have to wait until he lands in an organization that knows how to develop relievers to get his big chance.

Now... imagine this team with Ryan Pressley.

Perhaps that's the real reason we never got serious ob Kimbrel. Spend that money on a guy likely worse than the cat you just traded away. Until that trade bears fruit this FO will not sign or trade for an impact RH relief pitcher.

All of you complaining about the bullpen is getting really old. They havent made any significant changes to it and some of you act like games like to tonight surprise you? Jeeze, this has happened 4 years in a row.

I don't think anyone is surprised.
