Who Will the Twins All-Stars be?

What's your guess?

I'm thinking it will be Sano and Santana.

Dozier's got a shot, especially if the 2nd half of last season is taken into account. Perhaps Berrios if he has another 3 really strong starts?  Does Kepler have a shot?

Sano and Santana should make it. I don't see anyone else particularly close (Berrios just won't have enough starts to make a case).

We have almost month to go and pitchers are the last to get weighed in as they aren't voted on.

Thus I'm predicting it's Berrios not Santana, based on the way they're currently trending.

Though it would probably be the other way around if Molitor gets to pick in based on his vet heavy preference.

Don't sleep on Kintzler if he has clean outings between now and selection of the pitching staff.

Kintzler has a shot. He's 3rd in the league in saves. But every team has to have one. So that may limit the number the Twins can have.

Rosters are set July 9. That's 2 1/2 weeks, not almost a month.

It gets tricky with pitchers. Every team gets to send a rep.  For starting pitch regardless Sale and Keuchel should be locks.  Archer should be close. Reputations come into play ,  one of the Toronto pitchers and Indian pitchers by career.  Then there are teams that somebody has to be sent. A Tiger and/or Athletic starter or reliever?  What Ranger?  Who on the Angels replaces Trout?  Santana is far down the list.

Sano for sure.

Santana: 70%

Berrios: 35%

Mauer: 10%

Kintzler: 5% (RP always get crowded for those things)

The Twins will not have over 2 reps, nor should they unless they have a 12 game winning streak starting about tonight.

I would not be surprised at all if Sano was the only guy. If another guy makes it great, 3 would be awesome in an awkward way just because 3 All-Stars with a .500 team means,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, well,,,,,,,,,,,?????????????,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Bleacher Report posted their predictions today.  They have Sano and Santana for the Twins, but also mention that Santana could be "snubbed".  Also, when you look at the position player reserves, it's hard to see Dozier having a real shot.

I feel like the only other third player that might have a shot would be Berrios.

I'm leery of anything Bleacher Report writes.  If Santana wasn't picked, I wouldn't consider it a snub.  He is not far and away an all star pitcher.  I wouldn't have him as a top AL starter (which isn't a slight against him, there are just better choices). Might get in there as a replacement for injury though.

34 players on the roster.  Sano should win the vote at 3B.

Pitchers are selected primarily by player vote (5 starters, 3 relievers) and manager choice (last year, each manager chose 6 pitchers).  Then there's the "final vote" (although all of those candidates were position players last year) and replacements (again up to the manager and the league office).

The AL only took 5 SP last year (although 3 of them required replacements), and the NL took 9.  4 setup guys made the AL staff last year, which would make it harder for a closer like Kintzler to make it.  Looking back, it's been awhile since a Kintzler-style, low-K reliever has made either team -- maybe Jim Johnson back in 2012?  (Interestingly, Johnson is back closing this year in Atlanta with a 10.0 K/9)

Remember, Francona is manager.  I don't know if he plays favorites, but Kluber and Carrasco have solid cases, and of course he knows the value of bullpens and has a few excellent relievers to choose from.  He also might try to put on Lindor, Ramirez, Chisenhall, or maybe even Brantley or Encarnacion as reserves if they aren't voted on by fans or players.

Sano for sure and looks like he will be the only one.

Santana is the 24th best SP in fWAR in AL

By position rankings in the AL based on fWAR:

C - Castro 10th
1B - Mauer 10th
2B - Dozier 8th
3B - Sano 2nd
SS - Polanco 12th
OF - Kepler 23rd
DH - Grossman 6th

As far as relievers go, WAR is not a good measuring stick, but Kintzler is 10th in Win Probability Added (a much better measuring stick for RP)

So other than Sano, no Twins' player or pitcher deserves it, based on objective measures.

The Santana Berrios debate would be a good one if merit was one of the top factors when it comes to pitchers, but All-Star game pitching is a lot like the pro bowl, it's an honor to be named but little incentive to go.  As it stands right now Berrios is slightly ahead of Santana plus has more star qualities so if it came down to those two as of today I think Berrios gets it and as I've said in other threads I feel the margin will only increase as the season goes on.  With Sano getting in and either Santana or Berrios I doubt Doizer would do enough to get in, and it's probably to late for anyone else to get on a role and make it.

Given he pitches tonight and pitchers are only named and not set on the 9th it's 4 possibly 5 starts.  If he's just solid in those starts he'll have the resume to easily make it.

Because selection to an all star game is based on objective measures.

I lowered the qualifying threshold to 40 IP to see where Berrios ranked (6th in the AL, 4th among AL starters)... but more interestingly, our old friends Alex Meyer (3.52 ERA, 18th) and Mike Pelfrey (3.56, 22nd) popped up!

Man, we never should have gotten rid of Mike Pelfrey!

4 tops. Today. Monday, if there is a game. July 1. July 6.

I predict Sano, Santana, and Kintzler. Santana won't pitch though because of the rotation, making it 2 active reps. Kintzler is named but doesn't pitch. Sano goes 0-3. 2 Ks, 1 long out. Finishes in top 3 of the Derby.

I could see Dozier getting a chance at Derby too, based on last year.

Sano for sure. Erv maybe. We also have to remember the terrible teams that need a representative in the AS game. Usually that's a RP or SP.
