Who Will the Twins All-Stars be?

truthfully, I'll be a bit surprised if Erv doesn't make it (assuming of course he doesn't bomb out the next few starts). He's pitched quite well this year. I can see the case against him as well, but I just don't see managers picking a guy like Berrios.

"Erv might make it?" - are you guys serious?  His numbers, and I'm talking ERA, and win-loss record here, are among the top 5 in the AL.  Managers pick the pitchers, and they don't use advanced saber metrics when they select their guys.  I think Erv's a lock.  He leads the AL in complete games, too.  Managers love that!

I think Berrios has a real shot at this point.

Sano's going for sure and should start.

Because selection to an all star game is based on objective measures.

Should be, esp. since plenty of players are having bonus $ associated with selection or not.

Yup. Even more impressive than Santana's complete games are his shutouts. He has 3, Kluber has 2, and four other guys have 1. That's 9 total shutouts and he has 33% of them. That alone is probably enough to get him in.

Man, we never should have gotten rid of Mike Pelfrey!

I read somewhere that you shouldn't get rid of players who were top 50 prospects. Hang in there with them through the rough spots and they will be great.

Kintzler has less than a zero % chance of an all star bid.

He has the third highest save total in the AL. He's got a shot. Might depend on how many middle guys they bring. If they bring 4-5 starters, 4 closers and 4 middle guys, he might be one of the 4.

Not going to bring in a soft-tossing reliever to pitch against the best the NL has to offer.  If one wants to believe Kintzler has a shot, fine, but I certainly believe there is no chance at all. He is not one of the best relievers in the AL.  There are plenty I would take before him.

Santana has pitched to an over 7 era in June. I don't think he makes it. I wouldn't select him if the inconsistency continues. April was amazing, but one month does not an all star, or an ace, make. Unfortunately for Dozier, fans are a horrible way to select the all star team, and they never consider the second half of the previous season, like they should. Sano is it, I bet. And perhaps rightfully so.

If Berrios or Santana are lights out the rest of the starts up to the pitchers' selection, either one might get the call.

Last time I checked, this is the 2017 All Star game, not the 2016/2017.

Should they consider David Ortiz' second half of 2016 (.294/.371/.547) and vote him in from retirement, as well?

Different season.  Previous season numbers do not count.

Sano for sure.

Santana, maybe, but there is no guarantee. Berrios, no, he is too new.

Doubtful for anyone else. There are too many good pitchers and not enough innings in the game for Kintzler to have a chance.

Kintzler could get in by other guys being eliminated. Colome probably deserves to go. But if Dickerson goes, that eliminates Cololme because Tampa probably only gets one. For example.

I don't think it's nearly the open and shut case that you make it sound. I can just as easily say that it's called the 2017 All Star game because it happens in 2017. There's no rule that says you can't consider the 2nd half of the previous year, and it honestly makes more sense to me that you should.

You (Thrylos) just made a point about how selecting the players should be objective. If you want it to be more objective, wouldn't it also be a good thing to use a larger sample than 80 games to determine the best players?

Of course very few people consider the 2nd half of the preview year when voting, but I can't agree with any argument that says it would be objectively wrong to do so.

How about today?

yeah,, took some people dropping out, but glad for him and my fellow Twins fans.  Doesn't mean he deserves it, but glad he got it.

But being a replacement doesn't mean he actually got selected originally, BTW.

I actually think he is the most deserving Twin, but to each his/her own.
