Mauer+Sano

Each have 3 straight games with HR's.

In a season full of misery this seems to be a nice bright spot. Sano hasn't gotten off to the white hot start we all hoped, but the power is coming back around and is now on pace for 35+ HR I believe.

Mauer, hot start, big slump, but now is hitting bombs, definitely encouraging.

The last time Mauer hit 5+ HRs in a month was Aug 2009 (he hit 8). This has been his biggest HR flurry since Aug 2013 when he hit 3 in 6 days.

Nice.

The last four games are what I (and many others, I'm sure) envisioned back during ST. I'm not greedy; if they can each just hit a home run every other game or so that would be good.

Well.... they are making it over the fence. I personally wouldn't call them bombs, but they are sneaking over the fence and are home runs. All Mauer has ever needed to do is add about 10-15 feet of power to his swing and he would hit 40 homers a year.

Maybe Mauer needs to play in a dome capable field.  Career .849 OPS in Seattle, 942 in Milwaukee,  1.182 in Miami  .939 at Chase.  All better than his career OPS of .844

Career. 696 at Rogers Centre debunks that theory.

The more likely explanation is that those teams you listed haven't been very good during his career.

I agree with Nursie on this one!   Mauer was a terror at the plate in the Metrodome as well.   Of all Twins players, his production dropped off the most when the Twins moved to Target Field.

Mauer's numbers at home in 2012 and 2013 were almost exactly where he was at the Metrodome.  His dropoff had to do with the concussion not the fact that he's out of the dome.

More likely than the concussion was his BABIP just dropped to his 10 year career average in 2014. Just like Danny Santana, luck doesn't last forever, and I think you would agree, hitting 40 points over your career average is lucky and you would expect a drop off the next year.

well, what I like is that after his slump, he's still got an OPS over .800.   As much as Mauer's slump has sucked, I think most posters here would have been pleasantly surprised if we were told that 2 months into the season Mauer maintained an .800 OPS.  Not sure if he's back so to speak, as he showed flashes of his old self at various times the last 2 years, but it's encouraging none-the-less.

Correlation does not equal causation. Let's not make that mistake.

Given how often Joe hits the ball on the ground, I think the turf of the Dome probably helped a bit but yeah, your point stands. Joe wasn't a great baseball player because he played in the Dome 81 times a year. Joe was a great baseball player, period. The Dome may have helped him here and there but his 2010-2013 seasons were still outstanding.

So, Spring Training is now over   :go:

In a Strib article, Sano has been working with Bruno and Rudy Hernandez every morning on his swing.

Pretty good results    :)

Nice to see a positive article about Sano, and penned by the Strib of all papers. I don't think I'll ever understand where the Sano hate comes from, I suppose people love to hear/give "hot take," opinions. The guy has been one of the best hitters the Twins have this year yet reading some articles you would think hes a cancer. Our friend Mike Max took a shot at him Saturday night. Apparently the best time to criticize Sano is after he homers in 3 straight games.

On a side note Max stated that Sano "has been questioned by the people who employ him all season long." Is there anything more annoying than anonymous criticism from a "team source?"

Things got kinda messy when the Twins informed Sano that he'd be playing Right Field and it appeared like lack of communication, no communication on what Sano was supposed to do to prepare for it.  It was a weird 'he said, she said' mess. Nobody took real responsibility.

Sano is a big kid.  I have my doubts about him actually weighting 280lbs.  But he was definitely carrying a budda belly.  Look at him now.  Damn near svelte.

Couldn't agree more, Sano in RF is a giant mess. IMO the responsible party is the Twins. Like you said, Sano is a massive guy. He also had never played an OF position. It shouldn't shock anybody that the experiment has been awful so far. For some reason the FO has received a huge pass from prominent local media this season, and when the FO has been questioned they've shifted the blame. Its infuriating to me watching an organization place a top player in a position to fail, and when failure occurs, they blame the player.

Sano playing RF in order for us to keep Trevor Plouffe is the most idiotic decision the FO made this past off season and the single biggest reason I no longer have any faith in them.

Excuse me, a dome south of the border. with a trip to the dl for Canada.

1st, I never said Sano was a mess in RF.  2nd , are we talking about the same Sano?  Miguel Sano has looked pretty good recently.  He's past the initial hesitations and is moving around much better.  Room for improvement?  Of course.

I assumed the mess you were talking about was watching him try to play RF. I don't think hes a good OFer and I think he would be replacement level at best. The numbers so far show this as well.

Since theres only one Sano on the Twins we must be talking about the same guy. Hes the one who is ranked either 1st or 2nd (behind Mauer) in almost every offensive category for the Twins this season. My point is people can stop with the "bad attitude, lazy, doesn't get it, send him to AAA," arguments at any time.
