Wolfson: Twins Sign LHP Sean Burnett (Min Lg Deal)

Recommended Posts

Doogie tweeted that the Twins signed 33-year-old lefty Sean Burnett to a minor league deal.

He had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and is still working his way back. Last week, he had opted-out of his contract with the Braves.

From reports (Chris Cotillo), Burnett will have a June 15th opt-out date and will make a pro-rated $1million base salary if he gets to the big leagues, plus he could earn up to another $1 million in incentives.

I always like these kinds of deals. He's a guy who was very good and got a big deal before the injury. Obviously the hope is that he can come back and be what he once was.

In a bullpen that gets no grounders, I actually kind of like it.

If you'd have told me this morning the Twins would sign a lefty today, I'd have bet the house on Duensing though.

Burnett is interesting. He's been tough on lefties before and costs nothing. Worth a shot. He's not a needle mover, but at this best he's been a steady bullpen arm. I see no issue.

I'm not Sparky so no applause from me about acquiring a 33-yr old cast-off returning from surgery.

This is a "what's the point?" type of move.

To me, on the negative side, it feels like the point is to continue to delay the inevitable promotion of Chargois to the major leagues. On the positive side, hopefully this is the AAA replacement for Chargois and he gets the call-up.

More desperate moves at the periphery of the 40-man. Seems to me that the front office is in "quick cover our a**es!" mode. Throwing poo at the wall, hoping it sticks with no real plan in mind.

I know Brandon knows, but in case anyone missed it, Duensing signed with the Orioles today.

Oh boy! Leftovers from the 2nd worst team in baseball!

Spare pitching parts from the NL usually never works out.

I mean, it works out for them, because they find someone dumb enough to keep paying them.

Nope - this is Robbie Grossman part II.  Your first instinct was correct.

Probably but a guy can dream it's the positive scenario. Perhaps I'm reading into something that's not there, but the culture could be so toxic in Minneapolis that they don't want any young players to witness it.

This move is fine and all, but if the Twins want to call up a lefty reliever, why not Buddy Boshers? He's 5 years younger than Burnett and he's got a 1.42 ERA with a 9.9 K/9. I suppose the advantage with Burnett is that he has some major league success, but I'd rather go with the younger guy who's pitching really well.

I see the stats. But Boshers had the misfortune (or maybe I did, as a spectator) of blowing the save in Pawtucket, the one time I ever saw him pitch. So if he does get called up, I'm going to be holding my breath each and every time he gets called in, anticipating bad results.

It's nice to give guys like this a chance. Reminds of the Calvin Griffith days when he owned the Twins as the Senators and he would happily sign aging veterans to play in AAA and the  get some more major league days to better qualify for their pension. of course, those teams were dismal most of the time.

You can argue doing this. If the guy procduces, you can flip him for an added low level body. But he (and Buddy) at Rochester are taking much needed innings from people who will, hopefully, contribute to the Twins beyond this season!

Hey, can Plouffe play first and would the Mets want him? Or is it time for Justin Morneau to make a call to New York!

Except the Twins don't do this. When the Twins actually do hit on a reclamation project, instead of flipping them while they are hot, they hold onto them for so long, that all the positive contributions are eventually canceled out.

Yeah...Jared Burton, Casey Fien, Matt Guerrier, Kevin Jepsen......

My pulse is racing - another great move by the Twins.  Go TR, you said you needed to make more waver wire, signing of people no one else wants and you did it.

With a June 15 opt-out for Burnett? Ahh yes, the Twins living on the wild side.

Well, hopefully Nolasco is just waived after this abomination tonight so there is an immediate spot for this superstar lefty.

Shane, I thank you in yet another miserable season... for making my sides split whenever you deadpan- you are the man!

I've added that one to my Ryan quote hall of shame archive- the file is getting pretty full.

I can't wait for the RG III sequel, next week.

That sounds familiar, I just can't place where I've experienced bullpen anxiety like that before.......
