Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 So, all those predictions Vargas went down for Pinto were not quite accurate. Yay! Go Twins!
tobi0040 Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 He's not. AJ Achter, Logan Darnell, and Caleb Thielbar are the relievers in Rochester that are on the 40 man. OK, swap Oliveros for Darnell on the 40 man, promote Oliveros and call it a day.
nater79a Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Actually, i have liked Graham, other than the ONE real bad outing he has been more than ok, i just dont think they want to overexpose him and have him lose confidence if they dont trully think he is ready, but i agree with the Duensing, Stauffer and eventually Boyer. Yeah, might have been a little bit harsh on Graham. That 5 or 6 run outing might have swayed my thinking. Still, the Twins seem to be hiding him a bit over the last 3 weeks. Let's see if last night's outing changes that.

tobi0040 Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 On a side note, this is why some of us get irritated with these types of signings. The counter argument is we should lighten up because it is only $2.2M on a 1 year deal. No risk, etc. Well there is a cost to this. We are seeing it.
nater79a Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 OK, swap Oliveros for Darnell on the 40 man, promote Oliveros and call it a day. Nah, we need Darnell to replace Duensing at some point.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 LIghten up folks. It's not like we're sending Willie Mays down. It's Doug F'ing Bernier. That's actually what made me laugh when it was announced. Stauffer for Bernier. Kinda pointless when you get right down to it.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 That's actually what made me laugh when it was announced. Stauffer for Bernier. Kinda pointless when you get right down to it.I don't think it's pointless...it matters. Bernier was a waste of a roster spot, but ultimately had zero effect. Stauffer will pitch in winnable games. there's a good chance that has an effect.

Stauffer will pitch in winnable games. there's a good chance that has an effect. Unless Graham is the new Stauffer and Stauffer is the new Graham. If that's the case, I think the Twins should try to return Stauffer to the Braves. Maybe the Braves will be too polite to call the Twins back and tell them that they received the wrong reliever.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I was fully expecting Bernier to be demoted... For someone like Pinto. You know, because, well... because. Do I really need to explain my thinking here? So this was the "magical mystery move" that so many eagerly awaited and anticipated and wrote breathlessly about last Sunday?
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 It never seizes to amaze me the leash a guaranteed deal north of $2M will get you on this team. $2.2M is not a lot of money. We have better pitchers (plural) in AAA. Stauffer MLB 9.2 IP, 8.38 ERA, 2.27 WHIP, 16 H. 2 KStauffer AAA 5.0 IP, 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 2 KOliveros AAA 19.1 IP, 1.86 ERA, .98 WHIP, 30 KAchter AAA 19 IP, 2.37 ERA, .63 WHIP, 16 K Actually, it gets worse, the longer he sticks around: Stauffer’s deal calls for him to begin collecting bonuses of $250,000 apiece upon reaching 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27 appearances in 2015. The Ron Shapiro client stands to earn another $100,000 with his 45th outing and a final $250,000 for making a 55th appearance. That's why I never understood all the talk about Stauffer being in the SP mix. He was specifically brought in to take Burton's role in the pen, even though he's only been a low leverage RP. He's at 8 appearances so far... if he somehow miraculously hits all of his performance milestones, he could make $3.95M. Just going from 8 to 24 games gets him to $3.25M. The Twins have a history of obliging players and their bonuses, regardless of performance level. Why did I get the feeling that Oliveros shouldn't be allowed free access in any tall buildings?
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 This bullpen is a ticking time bomb. I've used that metaphor for the pen once already, today.... except my RP time bombs were fuse-activated- some have already blown up, some are on short fuse burns, others a little longer burning.... but they all pretty much have shown they can blow up at some point this season.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Yeah, might have been a little bit harsh on Graham. That 5 or 6 run outing might have swayed my thinking. Up until quite recently, there were more confirmed sightings of Amelia Earhart, the kidnapped Lindbergh baby- and Elivs... combined... than had seen JR.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 In best Arte Johnson voice, "Verrrry Innnteresting."
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 So this leaves us with a 3 man bench of Herrmann, Nunez, and Robinson. I think it'd be ideal if we kept a 4-man bench, but perhaps we'll revert to that once Vargas gets back up to the majors. This means that the 8 man bullpen will probably be temporary. Stauffer and Duensing will be competing to see who'll get kicked off the roster first.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Meh. They'll cut him after a few more outings if he isn't improved. He deserves a little leash. How do you come to your conclusions? See Gray, Jeff... Deduno, Samuel... Roenicke, Josh... Guerrier, Matt (2014)
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 To the person that says Stauffer has a track record of success......he's never been above replacement level as a RP. As a starter, he was "meh" and that was in 2011. I'm not sure why anyone thinks Stauffer has a good track record.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Sometimes I get confused about what people hope for around here. Actually, it's pretty simple. Promote and play players who have superior talent/performance history, bite the bullet and demote/trade/DFA when you make a mistaken judgement on non-performing personnel.

It's probably just that theTwins have been conditioning fans for four years to think any thing that isn't terrible, is automatically a success.

Although I grant he's no panacea, I still don't get the thinking in not protecting Gilmartin over some other suspect lefties on the 40-man roster.

We adore mediocrity! We value stability! We admire seniority! We salivate over effort! We abhor non conformity! And we weep and gnash our teeth without parallel!
Platoon Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Getting sent to Rocherster is one thing! Getting sent to Rochester for Tim S. Is quite another! Btw, why should the 25th guy be a "he's not gonna play anyway" guy? Why not fill that spot with someone with a specific talent? Speed, defense, power bat. Why let it lay fallow with a utility guy that does none of these things well? In the AL, the 3 spots above him should give you flexibility! (Barring 3 catchers of course).
