Nolasco to have MRI

If this goes really poorly and he has to miss significant time, TR is never, ever going to give out big contracts to pitchers again.

Good!

If anything, this might teach him to bid on the high priced guys who can actually make a difference. Add Santana and Nolasco's contracts together and you have enough to sign a genuine ace.

This always seems to happen after a particularly bad outing.

I understand that pitching hurt can diminish one's effectiveness, but I wonder if Nolasco would be having the MRI if he had pitched well.

Something tells me that if he had a good outing, he wouldn't be having the MRI.

This is a serious damage control situation for the front office.   Nolasco has been ineffective since the day he signed with Minnesota.  The Twins have invested a TON of money in him over 4 years.  If indeed the rumors are true that he doesn't want to be in Minnesota, it wouldn't surprise one bit that he and the front office milk this thing for all its worth and then figure out a timely divorce in 2016 when he only has one year left on his deal.

Here's another hypothetical scenario.  Suppose Nolasco requires TJ and is out for the season.  Given Pelfrey's awful track record and Milone's mediocre stuff what if those two are awful as well?  What do the Twins do then?  Roll with what they have till mid season and see how it goes or call up Meyer, May and possibly Berrios if things go way south early? Wouldn't it be ironic if injuries and poor starts force TR's hand?

I have a bad feeling that this won't be so hypothetical. I think that guarantees that you see Meyer and May. Not sure if the 3rd spot will be Berrios, Wheeler, or Taylor Rogers at this point. I'm not sure if either are on the 40 man (pretty sure Wheeler is), so who knows.

What I'm really hoping for is that one or both of Pelf/Milone pitch well enough to be traded at the deadline and replaced with someone who is dominating AAA hitters.

Lol, Surgery - MRI, What's the big diff?

Also, what has to happen for TR to get May and Meyer into the rotation? Does someone have to die? This is going to be a classic TR move, when Stauffer gets that spot.

It's a huge difference, actually. The differences are immense

I see what your saying about Pelfrey and Milone pitching well enough to be traded, but my fear is that if one or both pitch well TR will hang on to them for the entire season, because he feels the veterans give him a better shot to win.

As we all know Ryan is pretty stubborn when it comes to promoting pitching prospects.  I seem to remember an article last year that Gardenhire asked for Meyer after the all-star break (I think) and TR said NO.  That says a lot about this GM.

All of this might be a moot point depending on what happens after Nolasco's MRI, but I can't help but wonder what could happen.

So is the feeling that Nolasco is faking an injury to deflect attention from poor play?

It seems to me like he had poor control as a result of injury; limiting the effectiveness of his pitches.

If Nolasco wants to get out of Minnesota, he should pitch well so he's an attractive trade chip. That's the way to get out. He's not getting released.

I'm not totally sure how contract insurance works, but I wonder if those couple crappy innings that Nolasco pitched cost the Twins a bunch of insurance money

Depends on the nature of their insurance for his contract.  Usually, even though such payments are only mentioned publicly when a player misses an entire season, I think they are based on actual DL days, rather than seasons.  Here's an old article referencing that:

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2008/05/Issue-162/Leagues-Governing-Bodies/MLB-Teams-Insure-Long-Term-Deals-To-Protect-From-Player-Injury.aspx

It would be interesting to see how much insurance the Twins have on Nolasco's contract.  Perhaps as part of their strategy of targeting durable pitchers like Nolasco and Ervin Santana, the team could have tried to save money on insurance premiums with reduced coverage (higher threshold for claims, lower benefit payouts, etc.).

Terry Ryan "Ricky, I felt a little pain in your elbow late in your start yesterday."

Ricky "I didn't feel a thing, but a little chilly."

Terry "Great, head back to Mpls and have an MRI."

All I was saying is that if Nolasco had pitched a good game yesterday, the elbow discomfort might seem a little more tolerable.

You're assuming that Nolasco's LA comment means he wants out. If he needs to pitch well to get traded, it's a moot point. Due to injury, plain crappiness, or both, he has been unable to do so for over a year now.

I don't think he does want out. I think he was flirting with someone on Twitter and other people jumped to conlcusions about his tweet.

I think he's injured again, and it's probably killing him to pitch so poorly. My point is I don't think the injury was an excuse he was trying to make for his performance yesterday.

There is no way Nolasco is making it up. He worked hard this winter to get in shape ready to play. I don't think anyone here believes it. A few just want to joke and at the same time disrespect the player. These men deserve better.

We should call up Hamburger, local kid, minor league veteran, just an all around good story, (plus we want that first pick next year.)

Maybe so and your probably right that its just a ""a little spike."  But you can't deny his twitter posts and some of the comments he made about Minnesota weather and wishing he was still in LA.

If we want May and Meyer to have 1-2 months in AAA, then let it be Hamburger that gets the call as he had a good spring. He can be last years Yohan Pino, who was actually better than a couple of our regular SP's.

Just guessing here....He was a free agent and LA had no interest in signing him then.  Something tells me they probably don't have room for him now.

These pitchers were up at 21 - Santana, Liriano

22 - Lohse, Milton, Radke, Garza

23 - Mays, Baker, Slowey

24- Boof, May

25 - Perkins, Gibson

26 - Blackburn

Gibson was on the verge at 22 before TJ.
