nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Is the clock on TR now? How much time does he have left to turn the ship around? It's got to be do or die time for Ryan. I believed that TR's and Gardy's fates should have been tied together so there couldn't be any second guessing about which part of the equation was most at fault, but I don't think there's any question that if the replacement can't get the job done, Ryan will need to take the fall.

Kwak Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Sunrises require sunsets to precede them, we should look at Gardenhire's leaving as a sunset. I expect far fewer ejections of the next manager.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Dave Martinez would be my preferred candidate. It absolutely has to be from outside the organization. If not, it will be viewed as more of the same....probably because it will be. Platoon 1
Kirby_waved_at_me Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Even if Terry Ryan is still around, dismissing Gardenhire seemingly will have a domino effect on the kind of players that the Twins will be looking for this off-season. There's no need for a third catcher, the bullpen can remain relatively "small" - it may mean that the Twins make some interesting moves this offseason for position players that would not have been considered otherwise... drjim Provisional Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 The two coaches that I thought had a noticeable positive impact on the club were Bruno and Molitor - they do not deserve to lose their jobs, but I understand the situation. My gut tells me Molitor gets the gig and Brunansky, Steinbach, and Cuellar return. I would second this. Strikes me as the most likely scenario at the moment. I think Anderson and Ullger are out of the organization and Vavra returns to the minors as a roving instructor. Squirrel 1
cmb0252 Provisional Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Mike Maddox or Dave Martinez are my preferred targets. Go outside of the organization and get some fresh ideas in here. USAFChief 1
drjim Provisional Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 What about TR's comments (last winter?) how the team's failures were on him? This seems like quite a reversal from that. Maybe in 2014 he felt it was more on the coaches, but I'm not seeing how TR did appreciably better overall in 2014 either. I guess this move, assuming it comes with TR's blessing, is a sign that TR is willing to act differently than he has in the past, which is a good thing but needs a lot more to really turn things around (particularly on the player acquisition and talent identification fronts). Is the clock on TR now? How much time does he have left to turn the ship around? If they don't turn it around next season Ryan will be gone. Beyond that, I don't know if he does a whole lot different. Signs a starter and an OF and rolls with what he has.
drjim Provisional Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I'm not surprised. I thought it was a sure thing until the recent rumblings that he will stay, but it is the right move. It will be Molitor or an outside candidate, so intriguing names starting to float around.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 If Ryan is going to fire Gardy, he should resign effective immediately.I for one wanted both of them back, but if Ryan is going to make Gardy the scapegoat, he needs to go as well.Blow up the whole thing and start over with a new GM, coaching staff and plan. Good riddance.
gil4 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Kinda sad to see him go, but this probably needed to happen. Thanks for everything, Gardy. On a more serious note, I'm young, have managerial experience, read a book about sabrmetrics, and also took four years of Spanish in high school. I'm pretty qualified for the job, right? And I’m not talking about a couple guys who took Spanish class in junior high. I’m going to send Tony Oliva to talk to whoever you hire and they’d better be able to keep up with him in a conversation. Junior high, high school, whatever. It sounds like you're already out. gil4 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Yes to Dougie; no to Ozzie, maybe to Molly. Dougie might have had some of the "outside the organization" rub off on him while he was with the Red Sox. "No to Ozzie" isn't nearly strong enough. Craig Arko 1

gil4 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Gardy deserved better. I don't see it. Managers get fired all the time who deserve it less than Gardy. It wasn't like they handled it in a callous manner (like the Astros did, or like the Braves did with their GM). Gardy and TR even did the press conference together. Change is hard, especially in an organization that has had very little of it. It was time. Hosken Bombo Disco and Platoon 2
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) Gardy is being a pretty big man about this. Thanking everyone including the media. He dropped a line about Berardino calling his wife THIS MORNING to get a quote about the firing and Gardy jokingly gave him a hard time. I would not have been as amused. Ryan said he has offered Gardy a position elsewhere in the organization. Gardy has yet to decide. Gardy says he agrees with the decision as the team needs a new face and he wants them to win. I kind of want to cry. Most clubs wouldn't have the fired manager at the presser, let alone leading the damn thing. Mark Rosen to Ryan: Do you think your health puts you in position to lead the club and find a manager to get this team back to winning. Ouch. To sum it up, Ryan says yes. Listening on the radio, but Ryan has seemed on the verge of breaking down a couple of times. As a listener, I can tell you it's contageous. Gardy says he isn't done managing yet, he thinks. Ryan says it will take some time to hire a new manager. He said it will take time to fly guys in or fly out to meet guys. Says they can't just consider internal candidates. Ryan was asked if a Latin voice would be something they would be looking for considering the make up of the young talent. Ryan said diversity would be strongly considered for either a manager or a coach. Edited September 29, 2014 by nicksaviking 70charger and Squirrel 2
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Gracious exit by Gardy today at the presser. "Sometimes you just need to hear a new voice" "I think this is the right move" "I'm not burned out at all," but "I'm tired right now, but that's just because the season's over." Jim Pohlad and Dave St. Peter asked TR to come back next year, and he will.
D. Hocking Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Very classy of Gardy to come to the press conference to thank the club house and staff and the people letting him go. Terry sounded choked up when he said Gardy was like a brother. This was probably necessary, but still a bit sad. Squirrel and Platoon 2
