  1. It is a pleasure to watch someone who actually knows how to hit an outside pitch
  2. Alex Kirilloff is the one Twins player who potentially could consistently hit 25 HR a year with a 300 BA with above average defense at first and we are proposing to trade him. They really have not had a player with that potential since Kirby Puckett.
  3. I never root against the Twins and try not to lose faith. I would also hope for realistic assessments from the FO regarding whether the team should be buyers, sellers or stand pat at the trade deadline. When your team is buying high at the deadline only to totally collapse down the stretch an opportunity has been missed to improve the team for the future. I realize that hindsight is beautiful and always 20/20.
  4. On Kepler. “but he's declined to be part of the solution in center field” The statement can be read two ways. 1). Kepler was offered on opportunity to play CF, but declined. 2). His defensive skills have declined to the point where he should not be in CF. From my perspective none of the current outfielders are playing well enough to make the Twins a playoff caliber team. Some of this is related to injuries, which has become a multi year reoccurring problem. I would certainly want to see what Wallner can do with every day playing time.
  5. Does good to great hitters equal not striking out a lot. I would be interested in knowing if there is a correlation between SO and making it to the World Series.
  6. I think of Daniel Murphy as the poster child of the swing for the fences movement. Daniel Murphy was a weak hitting contact hitter with an ISO of around 120, a BA close to 0.300 and a K% of around 15%. He made himself relevant for a few years by increasing his HR from the mid teens to the mid 20s. But pitchers figured out that high fastballs could the upper cut swing for the fence approach and Daniel Murphy’s stardom fell as fast as it had risen. The Twins problem extends beyond remembering Daniel Murphy’s skill set in that they are teaching this approach to players who have BA well below 0.300 and with high K%. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/daniel-murphy/4316/stats?position=1B/2B
  7. Both Steer and Miranda are currently poor defensively at 3B. Not sure that either one is a long term solution at 3B. A mistake the Twins made was not calling up Steer to get a better evaluation of his skills.
  8. The Twins need to be sellers. This team from a position player perspective is just not very good. It is hard to see how adding 1 impact player substantially moves the bar.
  9. An additional factor may also be that players are focusing on a single sport much earlier in their lives. This increases risks for repetitive stress/ overuse injuries. In NJ where I live, it’s very difficult to play high school baseball without playing club baseball. There was an interview a number of years back with Tom Glavine where he mentioned that he did not learn how to throw a curveball until after he was drafted. Now pre-high school students are throwing curveballs. Alex Kirilloff was an outstanding HS pitcher. It is very likely that pitching in HS contributed to his needing TJ surgery.
  10. I would add team strikeouts to the list. (Although some players, like Gallo and Buxton are on the list because of K’s). I can’t remember a Twins team the had so many poor quality at bats.
  11. Most home runs are from “mistake” pitches. A team scores most of their runs from HR will meet this criteria of hunting for mistakes. I would be very interested in understanding why this team is on pace to break the single season MLB strikeout record. Is it poor preparation. A swing for the fences mentality. Or a collection of players who are past their prime.
  12. Yes he has been a failure. To the eye test, he does not appear to be a gold glove OF defender anymore. He seems like a very good defender at 1B. As with some of the other posters, I am not sure what the front office was thinking by bringing in another left handed hitting outfielder when they have Larnach and Wallner in AAA.
  13. On Cavaco. What does it mean to be placed on the developmental list after playing professionally for 4 years.
  14. I think most of the entire team is disappointing, not just Kepler. It is looking like total system failure for most of the hitters. Just looked up fWAR. Buxton remains the Twins leader with 0.9 which ranks at about 130th in MLB. (Or on average each team has 4 players who have had more production than the Twins best position player). Buxton’s 0.9 fWAR hasn’t moved in about 6 weeks.
  15. Nice write up, Matthew. How much of Buxton’s current batting issues are related to his knee. If his knee is so bad that the is unable/ not advised to play CF, why don’t the Twins put him on the IL and keep him there until he is well enough to play CF, because the current situation is not beneficial to Buxton or the Team.
  16. The Twins had 7 hits last night. That won’t get it done especially when the opposing team scores 9 runs. Luis Arraez had 5 hits last night.
  17. I would like to see the Twins win another World Series. If it takes 32 more years I likely won’t be around.
  18. If Sonny Gray wants to pitch deeper into games, perhaps he should pitch better. Justin Morneau and Tori Hunter almost got into a fight. I believe the issue was that Justin Morneau was not hustling on a play. https://www.postbulletin.com/news/hunter-morneau-nearly-came-to-blows
  19. Sometime ago on the Twins radio broadcast they mentioned that the Twins win about 2/3 of their games when the team has <10 Ks and only win about 1/3 of their games when they have 10 or more strike outs. Vs Detroit, the Ks were 11, 10, 5, and 14. And they won the game 2-0 on Saturday were they had only 5 Ks. I have accepted that this team is not very good. My expectations for the remainder of the season are quite low. I had posted on a different thread that the Reds who are in full rebuild mode having traded away about 1/2 of their team before, during and after the 2022 season have a better record than the Twins who were all in for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
  20. The past year, the Reds were in rebuilding mode, trading away more than half of their roster. The Twins were all in. The Reds and the Twins have identical records at this point. The main reason for this is the failure of Twins core to perform anywhere near their expected level. So no, Buxton, Polanco, Kepler, Sano have not met prospect expectations. I expect Polanco and Kepler to be gone before next season.
  21. I think the description of OAA is not quite correct. From MLB Outs Above Average for infielders takes the following factors into account. • How far the fielder has to go to reach the ball ("the intercept point"). • How much time he has to get there. • How far he then is from the base the runner is heading to. Therefore, it is a value that should be independent of positioning. (Or I think that the skill associated with good positioning is not captured by this method of analysis) https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/outs-above-average#
  22. It is just a joy to watch Lewis play. Trying to remember a Twins player who was that athletic. Maybe Buxton when he was allowed to roam CF.
  23. I thought at one point in the past the Twins had a rule about not letting any pitcher continue after throwing more than 35 pitches in one inning. Reasons for this would include that needing that many pitches to get through an inning is from a high stress inning and also indicates the pitcher is not being very effective.
  24. When you have a chance to turn a double play to get out of the inning, the infield needs to turn two. All the runs were earned, a scoring rule I would like to see changed.
  25. Different way for umpires to affect the outcome of a game. Of course they conveniently make it a non reviewable judgment call. This is a joke.
