  1. The Twins need to be sellers. This team from a position player perspective is just not very good. It is hard to see how adding 1 impact player substantially moves the bar.
  2. An additional factor may also be that players are focusing on a single sport much earlier in their lives. This increases risks for repetitive stress/ overuse injuries. In NJ where I live, it’s very difficult to play high school baseball without playing club baseball. There was an interview a number of years back with Tom Glavine where he mentioned that he did not learn how to throw a curveball until after he was drafted. Now pre-high school students are throwing curveballs. Alex Kirilloff was an outstanding HS pitcher. It is very likely that pitching in HS contributed to his needing TJ surgery.
  3. I would add team strikeouts to the list. (Although some players, like Gallo and Buxton are on the list because of K’s). I can’t remember a Twins team the had so many poor quality at bats.
  4. Most home runs are from “mistake” pitches. A team scores most of their runs from HR will meet this criteria of hunting for mistakes. I would be very interested in understanding why this team is on pace to break the single season MLB strikeout record. Is it poor preparation. A swing for the fences mentality. Or a collection of players who are past their prime.
  5. Yes he has been a failure. To the eye test, he does not appear to be a gold glove OF defender anymore. He seems like a very good defender at 1B. As with some of the other posters, I am not sure what the front office was thinking by bringing in another left handed hitting outfielder when they have Larnach and Wallner in AAA.
  6. On Cavaco. What does it mean to be placed on the developmental list after playing professionally for 4 years.
  7. I think most of the entire team is disappointing, not just Kepler. It is looking like total system failure for most of the hitters. Just looked up fWAR. Buxton remains the Twins leader with 0.9 which ranks at about 130th in MLB. (Or on average each team has 4 players who have had more production than the Twins best position player). Buxton’s 0.9 fWAR hasn’t moved in about 6 weeks.
  8. Nice write up, Matthew. How much of Buxton’s current batting issues are related to his knee. If his knee is so bad that the is unable/ not advised to play CF, why don’t the Twins put him on the IL and keep him there until he is well enough to play CF, because the current situation is not beneficial to Buxton or the Team.
  9. The Twins had 7 hits last night. That won’t get it done especially when the opposing team scores 9 runs. Luis Arraez had 5 hits last night.
  10. I would like to see the Twins win another World Series. If it takes 32 more years I likely won’t be around.
  11. If Sonny Gray wants to pitch deeper into games, perhaps he should pitch better. Justin Morneau and Tori Hunter almost got into a fight. I believe the issue was that Justin Morneau was not hustling on a play. https://www.postbulletin.com/news/hunter-morneau-nearly-came-to-blows
  12. Sometime ago on the Twins radio broadcast they mentioned that the Twins win about 2/3 of their games when the team has <10 Ks and only win about 1/3 of their games when they have 10 or more strike outs. Vs Detroit, the Ks were 11, 10, 5, and 14. And they won the game 2-0 on Saturday were they had only 5 Ks. I have accepted that this team is not very good. My expectations for the remainder of the season are quite low. I had posted on a different thread that the Reds who are in full rebuild mode having traded away about 1/2 of their team before, during and after the 2022 season have a better record than the Twins who were all in for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
  13. The past year, the Reds were in rebuilding mode, trading away more than half of their roster. The Twins were all in. The Reds and the Twins have identical records at this point. The main reason for this is the failure of Twins core to perform anywhere near their expected level. So no, Buxton, Polanco, Kepler, Sano have not met prospect expectations. I expect Polanco and Kepler to be gone before next season.
  14. I think the description of OAA is not quite correct. From MLB Outs Above Average for infielders takes the following factors into account. • How far the fielder has to go to reach the ball ("the intercept point"). • How much time he has to get there. • How far he then is from the base the runner is heading to. Therefore, it is a value that should be independent of positioning. (Or I think that the skill associated with good positioning is not captured by this method of analysis) https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/outs-above-average#
  15. It is just a joy to watch Lewis play. Trying to remember a Twins player who was that athletic. Maybe Buxton when he was allowed to roam CF.
  16. I thought at one point in the past the Twins had a rule about not letting any pitcher continue after throwing more than 35 pitches in one inning. Reasons for this would include that needing that many pitches to get through an inning is from a high stress inning and also indicates the pitcher is not being very effective.
  17. When you have a chance to turn a double play to get out of the inning, the infield needs to turn two. All the runs were earned, a scoring rule I would like to see changed.
  18. It is not just the strike outs, although that is the end result, many of the strike outs result from poor at bats, like swinging at pitches a foot out of the strike zone.
  19. I have looked up the K% of players who were on different teams last year. Taylor, Farmer, Castro, Vasquez all have K% about 10% higher than last year. Solano, is 3% higher and Gallo is about 2% lower. I don’t think these differences happened by coincidence. Add to this that several ex-Twins are doing really well.
  20. @Mark Git is a good question, I think it is a rare attribute to have both elite speed and a good hit tool (and the ability to run efficient routes). In the Twins organization Buxton, Castro, Gordon, Taylor and Lewis have elite speed. Of these only Lewis might have an above average hit tool.
  21. I thought for a moment that you were describing the current Twins roster.
  22. With the exceptions that Buxton has 5 more RBIs and more power and has not played an inning in the OF, there is little to differentiate M. Taylor from B. Buxton. The title is incorrect, it should read “Byron Buxton has become the insurance policy that M. Taylor needs”
  23. The Twins had one player in their lineup with an OPS over 0.800. The Rays had six. It doesn’t seem like a competition where a chance at an equal outcome is expected.
  24. @rv78I did not make my comments clear enough. I think acquiring pitchers with multiple years of control at the trade deadline is higher risk strategy and the Yankees acquisition of Montas is another example of risks associated with this strategy. Like the Twins they hurt their playoff prospects last year and this year by making a trade that didn’t work out.
  25. There are multiple avenues to do trades. Acquiring expiring contracts at the deadline vs acquiring pitchers that are not on expiring contracts and therefore pay a higher price in terms of prospects. If the FO makes a good trade the team is helped for the next seasons and a bad trade is more painful. Trading for pitchers on expiring contracts would be a lower risk strategy. The Twins were not the only team that made deadline acquisitions for pitchers that didn’t work out. The Yankees trade for Frankie Montas and subsequent unloading of Jordan Montgomery were also trades that did not work out for the Yankees.
