  1. The Twins made it to the playoffs last year because the team got hot in the second half led by Lewis (IL), Julian (0.210), Wallner (AAA), and Kepler. Of these only Kepler is putting in a similar performance as the second half of 2023. Otherwise we are seeing a team with similar offensive capabilities as the early 2023 version and that is just offensive.
  2. We have known since Buxton was called up that his swing was too long. I guess Paul Molitor had zero influence on that.
  3. The TV rights dispute between Bally and Comcast was covered in the Wall Street Journal last week. The issue is that Bally wants Comcast to charge all their cable subscribers while Comcast wants to offer a tier of service so that only subscribers to the Twins channel would pay Bally wants the current/ past model of charging every cable customer as it generates the most revenue for Bally. Comcast dislikes this model as many customers are charged for services they don’t use and this encourages cord cutting. Other commenters above have indicated that Comcast is also a competitor to Bally and their may be other motives besides this years revenue/profit in the dispute.
  4. Hmm! Austin Martin was on the bench. He can hit better and field better than Margot. Maybe I missed something, was there a reason Martin was unavailable.
  5. The TV rights dispute between Bally and Comcast was covered in the Wall Street Journal. The issue is that Bally wants Comcast to charge all their cable subscribers while Comcast wants to offer a tier of service so that only subscribers to the Twins channel are paying. Had Bally executives been reading the comments section in TD this past winter they would have realized that the cable subscription model would eventually become an issue with the pay to subscribe model being the best long term solution. Bally wants the current/ past model of charging every cable customer as it generates the most revenue for Bally. Comcast dislikes this model as many customers are charged for services they don’t use and this encourages cord cutting.
  6. To me it seems the FO took the easy road (and perhaps the one that potentially offered the most money for this year). However, Bally’s was in financial distress and that establishing a streaming option seemed to be the long term path forward. To have a contract which prohibited the Twins from having streaming rights seems short sighted.
  7. I think most people would agree the culture is very important in an organization and on a personal level I have taken less money to work for an organization whose cultural values align with my own. In baseball, culture is also important for winning and having a toxic personality (e.g. Josh Donaldson) can be very disruptive to clubhouse cohesiveness. As the Twins and other mid market teams can not offer the same FA salary as the Dodgers, Yankees or other large market teams, how many baseball players would accept less money to play for an organization with a good culture.
  8. With regards to the forums, it is nice to have an avenue to post information. It doesn’t get used as frequently as in the past but I think the concept is nice. I do think that there has been an overall increase in the level of negativity on the site with some of it seemingly personal. I don’t like the thumbs down and I wish it would be removed as an option. I try very hard not to respond to negative comments or comment negatively There seems to be more articles on the front page and as a result the length of time people are actively commenting on each article is less (I actually don’t know if this is true, but seems to be my perception)
  9. Typo. Farmer, who decked the outfielder. should be deeked it would be interesting to see a runner score because he decked the outfielder. The runner would probably be called out for interference or running out of the baseline or unnecessary roughness Thank you for the write up it must be challenging to get a detailed game summary written shortly after the game ends
  10. There are a number of unknowns. If he can handle the workload of being a starter, he will be more valuable as a starter than a reliever—both in terms of team value and his own career financial value.
  11. Per Fangraphs, Margot has not had a year with positive defensive metrics since 2021. Not sure why he should be considered a defensive first outfielder. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/manuel-margot/14712/stats?position=OF Where is is the current generation of Nick Punto when need him. The modern version of Nick Punto would not be on this team because he can not hit. But wait, the hitters aren’t hitting and we are stuck with the worst of both worlds.
  12. “Of course, part of the hope for the Twins this season was to strike out less” Hope is not a strategy. A strategy is drafting or promoting players with elite contact skills or hitting outside pitches to the opposite field.
  13. “And the softer upcoming portion of the schedule is conducive to going on a run” haven’t they played Detroit and KC 10 times this month. On average it doesn’t get a lot softer than that. The White Sox are bad but still.
  14. Did not like the idea of PH for Kirilloff and Larnach in the 8th. With RISP 2 players with a combined BA of 0.609 were replaced with two players with a combined BA of 0.278.
  15. Does Buxton not running on his “double “ off the wall show up in WPA.
  16. Somehow there is a disconnect between the Twins results and the statistical data. The statistical data is that runs scored is strongly correlated with ISO (R^2 is close to 0.80) and that strike outs don’t matter (R^2 is small). This reflects the Twins organization approach. We want power and K’s don’t matter. The last few years the Twins were close to the top in terms of runs scored as a result of HRs while leading the league in Ks. Yet for the Twins, they have a losing record when striking out more than 10x per game. This was discussed on the Twins radio pregame show last year.
  17. This article appeared in April 2014. At that point in his career Joe Mauer’s longest hitless streak was 0 for 10. https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-sports/mauer-snaps-hitless-streak-in-twins-win
  18. You mean the Austin Martin who was the 22nd ranked MLB prospect in 2021 whom the Twins tried to change his swing to generate more power. They screwed up his swing so badly that some even questioned if he would be an MLB player. The difficulty in wishing for more players like Austin Martin is that the Twins try very hard not to acquire/draft such plays and if they do they change their swing or trade them. One aspect of the Twins hitting philosophy that really makes me question how hitters are being coached is the pitches on the outside part of the plate that batters try to pull rather than hitting to the opposite field. Buxton seems to be in that zone right now.
  19. Kyle Farmer played most of the 2022 season at SS for the Reds, turning in slightly above league average defense. He was expected to provide insurance for the infield, including as a longer term substitute at SS if needed. I think one of the reasons he was retained was due to Correa’s injury. Why he is not the primary SS now that Correa is out is the question that should be explored.
  20. The Orioles are a much better team than the Twins right now. Hard to expect success.
  21. MLB could do a number of items to reduce injury risk. First, they could raise the seams as this would enable more ball movement with less stress. Second, make it harder to hit home runs by deadening the ball. Three, raise the pitching mound. Changes that were made to increase offense resulted in pitchers adjusting by adding velocity and spin to be more effective. Youth sports is also part of the problem. In order to be drafted, players need to be playing baseball year round (or at least 9 months of the year).
  22. Carlos Santana is a top 20 percentile first baseman is true in the statistical sense but only because so many 1B have negative fielding run value. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/fielding-run-value?year=2023&team=&min=500&pos=3
  23. Every time Larnach seems to be getting things together he gets hurt and his hitting falls apart. I hope he does better this time as the Twins need several players to step up. I do think it is important not to judge a player while they are hurt, but at some point you are a player who is not productive enough to contribute. if Larnach bombs, this would be the 3rd hitter who were first round picks that didn’t make it.
  24. Very good for Tyler Jay. I hope it works out for him. A number of pitchers have had thoracic outlet surgery to relieve finger numbness from nerve impingement. Very few of these players return to their pre-injury effectiveness.
  25. I wondering if it is possible to auto fill our comments from last year. Instead of summarizing another awful performance by our team, we could have highlight videos of the Twins all time greatest plays/games.
