  1. Can’t wait for robo ball and strikes.
  2. I’m sure that most major league players realize that hitting 0.130 isn’t going to cut it and Lewis should be sent down or put on IL if he is hurt. The Twins have at least 3 options to play 3B without Lewis.
  3. When pitchers like Coulombe have success it makes me wonder if there is too much groupthink in baseball. Hi octane pitchers throwing the same/similar pitches with maximum delivery makes it easier for hitters to adjust to different pitchers.
  4. And Jason Bartlett. Bartlett put up 9.4 fWAR in 3 years at SS with the Rays.
  5. Buxton made a very good throw in the 6th to keep the Orioles lead at 1 (2-1)
  6. Jose Miranda is -14 OAA at 3B in what amounts to a full seasons worth of playing time since 2022. Of all the players with at 1000 innings at 3B, only Patrick Wisdom and Jake Burger have a more negative OAA. The most generous thing that can be said is that he is hurt to often to establish whether or not he is capable of becoming a serviceable major league 3B. On the current roster his path is limited to 1B and DH and being an above average hitter. This is probably true for Julien as well. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?lg=all&ind=0&season1=2022&season=2025&qual=1000&stats=fld&pos=3b&type=1&pagenum=2&pageitems=30
  7. I would add that pitchers also figured out that high fastballs at or just on top of the zone could effectively neutralize the upper cut swing for the fences approach that Daniel Murphy popularized. I think the multi years of focus on this approach has hurt Twins hitters as the organization would work on changing hitters swings to capitalize on this approach to hitting. Kepler especially comes to mind. Both Lewis and Austin Martin have commented on how the Twins attempts to change their swing did not work for them.
  8. Let’s start Sunday morning with some positives. The Twins won yesterday and Byron Buxton is tracking to play in 147 games this year. Half of the starting lineup has an OPS < 0.700. Neither Ty France nor Bader is the Twins problem. The offensive problems are Correa hitting near the Mendoza line. He is under contract for at least 3 more years. Lewis, Wallner and Keaschall are on the IL. I would like to think that that this team would be better if the latter 3 were in the lineup every day. Having many players on the IL seems to be an ongoing issue.
  9. Perhaps the late season 2023 surge was the worst thing that could have happened to this team. It let everyone believe that a team of Kepler, Correa, Lewis, Wallner, Jeffers and Julien could take the team to next level—rather than for example rebuilding. After a few more months of promising baseball in 2024, the offense totally collapsed. It is hard to comprehend such offensive ineptitude from players who could at one time hit.
  10. The biggest challenges facing the Twins is that they have constructed a roster of too many players who are too frequently injured. Buxton, Correa, Lewis, Miranda. There is a limit to the number of capable backup players that can be on the 26 and 40 man roster. Some is bad luck (Lewis) some were active decisions (Correa, Buxton). The second half of the 2023 season dominated by Wallner, Lewis, Julien and to a lesser extent Miranda perhaps gave unrealistic expectations of future performance—bad defense is okay if Julien can hit 0.300. For about last decade or so, the Twins have been near the top of the league in % of runs scored by HR. They have achieved this by emphasizing hitting over defense and increasing power by increasing strike outs. I think one of the challenges with this approach is that high K% hitters are more streaky and also more effectively neutralized by good pitching.
  11. Ultimately the solution involves some combination of having the SP throw 6 or 7 innings (a stretch considering only Lopez is reaching 5 innings per start) or having more than 1 reliever who can throw 2 or more innings. Looking at todays game which burned through 8 pitches, both Sands and Varland could have been expected to throw multiple innings—possibly Jax as well.
  12. I think that with a Torpedo bat, a player should be able to generate more bat speed vs an equal weight normal bat s the center of mass is closer to the hands. A player could also use a heavier Torpedo bat and retain that same bat speed.
  13. Very interesting article. Some, but not 2 inches of height difference, can be explained by measuring in bare feet vs with cleats.
  14. @Richie the Rally GoatThank you
  15. I’m am struggling to understand the rationale for terminology used on MLB.com under Transactions. For example, on 3/20, Javier Roman was assigned to the Minnesota Twins. There are many such transactions. What does this mean and why. Using more descriptive terminology such as being “assigned to the minor league camp”, or being “assigned to a specific minor league team” would convey meaningful information.
  16. Castro had -9 DRS at SS last year. His shortcomings are very exposed when he has to play SS on a regular basis.
  17. I think DaShawn Keirsey over Marlot (-0.2 fWAR, 79 WRC+) would have been preferred. At least we would know if Keirsey is an MLB 4th outfielder who can play an acceptable backup CF. Not knowing this has led to Bader with Keirsey still on the 40 man roster. Agree that they had no internal options at 1B.
  18. 1 OF OAA = 0.9 runs. I would be curious to know how this translates to wins and losses https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/fielding-run-value
  19. There are many Matt Canterino’s in baseball, unfortunately. It has become the nature of the game.
  20. The challenge the Yankees face, and to a lesser extent the Mets, is these teams have very depleted farm systems and have little to offer the Twins for Lopez, Ryan or Ober. Agree with @chpettit19that this would need to be a Chris Archer type trade.
  21. Hmm! I’m glad he’s pitching well but Dobnak has thrown 135 innings in the majors. I don’t think he meets the Sire criteria.
  22. Jefferson Morales is having a good camp. I am not finding much out there about him. He has been in the Twins organization since 2016 but seems not to have made any of the TD prospect rankings
  23. Agree with the article that only Correa and Lee provide MLB quality defense at SS. I think Lee’s downward slide in hitting last season was due to his back injury.
  24. Just for completeness, the Suns have traded their first round draft pick thru 2032. In some cases they have a swap where they have swapped first round picks for whichever is worse (which could mean retaining their original pick).
