"Royce is fighting it right now, He knows the results are not where they need to be. And he admits it is weighing on him.'

Audra Martin talks to the Twins infielder about his performance and job security.

I think Royce wears his heart on his sleeve. I wish he had a little more filter. I suspect many, if not most, players have similar feelings but keep it to themselves.  Many of the things he says can be interpreted in many ways. He comes off as arrogant, selfish, candid, and a whole bunch of other characteristics.

Professional athletes receive a fair amount of public relations training these days. The world is watching and so how a person handles social media, interviews, and their general public appearances can be a bit much for a young person. While I was successful in my mid 20s I never had people watching my social life and constantly asking me questions. Royce Lewis has led a charmed life and now it seems to be flaking a little bit. He seems to like to talk, so Audra interviews him about his struggles and thoughts, which may be normal to athletes but most will just give canned answers. Lewis doesn't exactly sound poised. Kent Hrbek said that every punk in camp wanted his job and left it at that without elaboration of any real substance. Royce should probably reduce the noise in his world to focus on his job. However, each fellow is different.

Perhaps Royce Lewis should take a page from Connor Prielipp. For those of you who saw his post game interview you know what I mean. It was an instant classic. One word answers without any expression that ended with Prielipp answering "OK" when Audra said, "Well, you should go celebrate with your teammates."

Royce is the modern day Shane Spencer. I think it was 1993, Yankee fans were convinced that Spencer was the second coming of Joe DiMaggio and he fizzled out hard and quickly. I still think the biggest culprit with Royce is / was injuries and but-for that, he could have been really good for the Twins - not necessarily to the level of 2023, but close. Never say never, but I think the door's closed on him long-term in Minnesota. Would be surprised if he's on the roster next season and that sucks because the game of what-if is a crappy one to play.

The Twins made their decision on Royce Lewis in January of 2023 and should have started exploring trades right then and there. Even this offseason you might have gotten back a replacement level flyer for him. I hope they trade him, for his own sake, because I like him and want to see him succeed one more time before the clock runs out.

at a point early on, royce was must see tv when he was at bat. i missed phone calls and work because i was watching his at bats. i had a royce t-shirt, i would tell my wife about his heroics and now have nothing to tell her. i want him so much to succeed but the days are fading on him as a long term player with the twins. it's really too bad.

I don't worry about his public comments. I actually like players who speak honestly and transparently but the public tends to tear those statements apart and that's why we typically get watered down PR statements.

In regards to the subject matter of his comments.

He should be uncomfortable. He hasn't performed well enough to be comfortable. His 2025 numbers and 2026 numbers thus far are 504 At Bats of not being what we need him to be. That's 504 AB's out of his career 1109 AB's. How much down play should a team absorb?

He isn't earning every day playing time but it's quite possible that the Twins front office failed to roster suitable competition and all eggs are in the Royce Lewis basket.

Royce sounds like he needs a hug. I hope he can work through this.

Maybe a trip to Mickey's Diner and get him a chocolate malt.
