stringer bell Verified Member Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Not a bad move at all, but it doesn't move the needle much. The bullpen is still a major problem. In checking Rogers out at BBRef, he is only a couple weeks short of ten years of service time, a mark that is surprisingly rare and significant. A statistical oddity--Rogers' ERA and FIP are identical at 3.34. Cory Engelhardt 1
JCTwinsReborn Verified Member Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Zero doubt this is a season of scrap heap pickups to go through the motions. If Lewis, Ryan, and even Buxton have decent starts to the year, how are they not demanding trades? RpR 1

If we are over .500 - the bullpen seems functional and seems like could be effective if we trade for 1 or more bullpen arms at the deadline.

stringer bell Verified Member Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Interesting to compare Taylor Rogers with his twin. They aren't much alike in style and Taylor has almost four more years of service time and has made a lot more money in his career, but Tyler has been the more effective reliever since Taylor was traded away from the Twins. Tyler signed a multi-year deal fir over $10M per year, while Taylor is getting a fraction of that salary and only got a one-year deal. LewFordLives and Doctor Wu 2

Doctor Wu Verified Member Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Good signing, and good value, but as others have also said, it doesn't dramatically improve the bullpen. We still need a couple of more outside arms in addition to pitchers from the farm and/or ex-starters.

We still need a couple of more outside arms in addition to pitchers from the farm and/or ex-starters. Bullpens are definitely finicky, I mean sometimes a team can spend big bucks on a bullpen and they are just average. Other times a couple of guys come out of nowhere and have great seasons and then all of the sudden a team has like a top 5 bullpen? But in no way was it predicted at the beginning of the season. I think the Dodgers spent like 60 million on their bullpen last year and they were using starting pitchers to close out games in the playoffs??? So hopefully a guy or two surprises and someone like Taylor Rodgers has a little bit of a renaissance? Its not the way you'd draw it up, but it can happen in the bp with some no names easier than say in the rotation or in the infield/outfield. Doctor Wu 1
mac098 Verified Member Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I'm all for giving someone a chance, but do we really need to continue going for the bargain bin? We went from one of the strongest BP's to relatively the weakest. I know none of us are inside the Twins clubhouse, but unless we're planning on moving some SP prospects to the BP, I don't see us getting better in that area anytime soon.

The issue is @Richie the Rally Goat had negotiated a truce that @USAFChief and I were going to ignore each other and not respond to each other posts - and I will log on to multiple laughing emojis and passive aggressive posts directed at me. Guess I am the only one who honors a deal. So yes I think a drink is good.
