Jose Berrios packed off to bullpen duty for the Blue Jays.

That one surprised me till I took a look at first half vs second half of his season.

Downhill slope.

Berríos placed on IL yesterday, which might explain his lack of effectiveness in the second half of this season.

Carlos the “leader” Correa

from Talkin’ Baseball; Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Isaac Paredes all took one at bat tonight and then exited the game because the Astros are eliminated from playoff contention

José De León had his contract purchased by the Red Sox. The Rose Hose have clinched a wild card, but could move ahead of the second AL Central team to the #5 seed. I suppose it is one day and done for him, but still surprising that a playoff team would make that transaction.

De León appeared in 12 games for the ‘23 Twins before having TJ surgery.

Starting on the last day of the season for Boston, the now 33-year-old Jose De Leon. After a rocky stint in AAA, his first start back in the majors was pretty good: 6.2 IP, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs, but striking out 8 batters.

So what , so were Gaetti, Hrbek and Brunansky, good grief.

They were lovable losers. Underdogs in every game. Calvin took apart the Met Stadium teams and went with a bunch of rookies and “never will be” players (as opposed to has-beens). Out of the ashes came the cornerstones of the two World Series winners. I remember the ‘82 Twins fondly despite their 100-loss season.

Former Twins on playoff team rosters at the moment

Boston: Rob Refsnyder

New York: Luis Gil (not on WC roster due to turn in pitching rotation)

Toronto- no playoff roster yet: Jose Berrios (IL), Jeff Hoffman (sort of a former Twin), Louis Varland, Ty France, Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Cleveland: none

Detroit: Chris Paddack (40-man, pitched on Sunday)

Seattle- no playoff roster yet: Mitch Garver, Jorge Polanco, Luke Raley

Philadelphia-- no playoff roster yet: Jhoan Duran, Harrison Bader, Max Kepler

Chicago: Willi Castro, Taylor Rogers. Caleb Thielbar

Cincinnati: Zack Littell, Emilio Pagan, Spencer Steer

Milwaukee- no playoff roster yet: Trevor Megill

Los Angeles: Ben Rortvedt

San Diego: Luis Arraez

Ben Rortvedt is on his fourth ML team, his second this year, and he's hitting .152 this season. He started last night because Will Smith is hurt. Right place, right time, good for him.

Ron Washington is out as Angels manager. Maybe it’s the (baseball) end of the line for Wash, who was a member of the terrible 1982 Twins (60-102). Best wishes and good health.

He was also with the Twins up through spring training in 1987, but was cut in favor of Al Newman when the rosters were finalized. He landed later that year with a truly awful Orioles team while the Twins went on to win the World Series.

Bill Pleis, a member of the inaugural ‘61 Twins passed away at age 88. Pleis was a left handed reliever who Halsey Hall called “Shorty”. He spent his entire six-year career with the Twins, winning 21 games and losing 16.

A footnote about the '61 Twins. While there are no position players living from the original Twins, a large number of significant pitchers have survived the 64 years--including four of the five most used starters--Don Lee, Camilo Pascual, Pedro Ramos and Jim Kaat.

Interesting.  Might be worth someone's study, if the Twins are just a statistical fluke.

And I think I had baseball cards for at least three of those pitchers! Great research to find that four of those guys are still alive.

Ben Rortvedt miraculously was on the World Series champions this year. Now, he's waived and heading to the Reds.

Since the Reds finished with a better W/L record than the Twins, and thus have a lower right during waivers claims, it appears that our FO felt that Ben's not a better backup catcher than the sparse and motley group we already have in-house.  He was of course a hold-over from the old Terry Ryan regime, which by now is down to basically Byron Buxton and Michael Tonkin unless I'm forgetting someone.

Good for Gray. The Rose Hose are a much better bet to contend than the Cardinals. It also probably diminishes Joe Ryan to the Red Sox trade talk.

Gray gets to pitch for a contender.

Cardinals had to pay $20M of his remaining contract and got a 26 year old RHSP with an ERA north of 5 and a decent looking Lefty prospect in high A ball.

Not an overwhelming return for Gray.

Have no idea if this takes the Red Sox out on a potential Ryan trade....
