So...Varland gives the team the start they need, but the BP fails famously...seems like a pattern here

Well…the Rockies give up an average of 5.62 runs a game, so…if we had just been average offensively, we would have…

been the first team ever to win a game by .62 runs. Sadly, we won’t get to see that.

I’m going to go the other direction on Kirilloff.

Kirilloff is a sensitive guy, seems like a guy who would flourish if they just told him, “you’re our guy” and put him in the lineup every night.

I edited the post, he’s only 26, I thought he was closer to 30

Oh, dang.  Rockies pitcher is a right-hander.  No chance of seeing Farmer or Vazquez pinch-hitting for somebody good.

Self-quote:

OK, maybe for Kiriloff.

Dude needs a St Paul reset fast.

That probably defeats the point of the spot start. They are trying to extend the pitching  through a stretch with no off days.  It's probably more like Louis will wear it for 100 pitches regardless of result type of night.

I would have accepted this....

Yeah, a year ago we talked about how huge it would be if Kirilloff came back 100% from his wrist issue. Well, he’s apparently 100% now but he’s also now just another mediocre guy with minor league options.

Maybe.

But I hold the manager responsible for in game decisions. Lineups. Strategy. Positioning. Pitching moves. PHing. Etc.

Clearly there's a corporate input. It's his job to take way makes sense, and disregard what doesn't.

He gets zero slack from me because someone with a computer told him it'd be a good idea to take Varland out after 2 times through the order, no matter what.

With a thin-ish pen in a game you're deliberately trying to give your staff some rest.

i was not offering a one-word defense of the manager.  😀

Merely trying to offer a better context than egotism.  If anything it's too much in the other direction from that.

Nothing worse than a one run loss :(

Anti-joke of the day:

Q: What's worse than finding a worm in your apple?
A: Cancer.

(F Cancer. We've all been touched in some way by it. My late brother would approve of this post, so there.)

Well since this is Twins Daily, your punchline could have also been Avian Flu, or Joe Benson. 🙂

This is off topic just to start a different conversation. Recently you replied back to me saying (my paraphrasing) you've never been more excited about the health of the organization. Help me out, because I do want to be positive. Not being able to watch them often has turned me into a box score guy and I don't pay close attention to the minors. Correa is obviously good, but he's not a superstar. Lewis I very much hope is the superstar because we are starving for one.

It's hard on nights like tonight but I'm a pragmatic optimist. Incurable.

I see the rest of the league and am impressed by the way this team compares. They ain't perfect but this is also a game of failures.

I see the most talented 40 man roster in my lifetime. AK might need a reset, who we got. Err, let's give Matt flipping Wallner a try.

I see the pitching pipeline developing long before Zebby appeared and SWR learned 97.  It does not matter if they were drafted or traded. We are close to being the Mariners and Marlins with extra pitching to pass around. That's nuts to a lifelong Twins fan but look around the league.

I see the vision that gets them into the tournament with the best possible roster at the proper time. Complain about Margot and Farmer holding back the kids, but also look at the potential of the kids to play them out of those spots in September. (an extra year of control doesn't hurt either)

We have very fresh evidence that Rocco will manage differently in a postseason game. It was crazy how those postseason games were managed like a game thread wet dream.

Yes the moves we want him to make in June seem obvious but different things are important now and I know that I don't have enough information to know what they are. Would I have left Louie in? Absolutely, unless they shared some other information that would change my mind.

As it is, I'm quite encouraged by Louie tonight. I'm probably a bit of a Bobo for Louie but I saw what I wanted tonight. Maybe they did too.

I need to see them play to their potential starting pretty soon. Performances like this are concerning but we have seen far too many times in baseball that once it clicks, it clicks.

This team has the potential to morph into the Atlanta Braves of a couple years ago.

There. I said it.

Or Covid, they seem especially triggered by Covid...

Well, i hope Caleb Thielbar finds it again before his next outing.

I guess there will be one. His post game interview was tragic enough I feel awful for jumping on him.
